Chapter 6 - The East Gate House

“The East Gate House,” Evelyn said.

Claire zoomed in on the photograph.

“What is that?”

“An old residence on Whitmore land. Jonathan used it for visiting executives years ago.”

“I’ve never seen it.”

“You have. The road is hidden behind trees near the eastern boundary.”

Claire remembered an iron gate she had passed while riding with Daniel.

It was always locked.

She called the detective assigned to the missing-person case, Detective Lena Ortiz.

Ortiz arrived within forty minutes.

She examined the photograph.

“Could be recent. Could be staged.”

“It came with a demand.”

“That changes things.”

Claire gave her the message.

Ortiz asked, “Who knows your number?”

“Half the state.”

“Who knew about the settlement?”

“Margaret. Owen. Maybe Margaret’s attorneys.”

Ortiz requested emergency preservation orders for the number and advised Claire not to go near the gate house.

Claire agreed.

Then, thirty minutes later, she drove there.

It was her second major mistake.

Evelyn sat beside her.

“You told the detective you wouldn’t do this.”

“I told her I understood her.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

The iron gate stood open.

That terrified Claire.

They drove through.

The East Gate House appeared between bare trees, a stone building with shuttered windows.

No vehicles.

Claire approached the front door.

Unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled stale.

“Daniel?”

Nothing.

The room from the photograph was there.

Same white-horse painting.

Same wooden chair.

But Daniel was gone.

On the floor lay a broken watch.

Claire recognized it immediately.

Daniel’s.

She picked it up.

Evelyn whispered, “We need to leave.”

A door slammed behind them.

Owen Cross stepped from the hallway.

Claire’s breath caught.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Where is Daniel?”

Owen looked at the watch.

“You shouldn’t touch things either.”

Evelyn moved between them.

“Owen, don’t.”

He looked at her coldly.

“You’re in no position to give instructions.”

Claire held up her phone.

“I’m recording.”

Owen smiled.

“Then record this. Daniel came here voluntarily.”

“Why?”

“To meet his mother.”

“Where is he now?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t care what you believe.”

Evelyn said, “Margaret is going to sacrifice you.”

Something flickered in Owen’s eyes.

Good.

She knew him.

“You think she’ll protect you because you protected her?” Evelyn continued. “Ask anyone who worked for Jonathan how that ends.”

Owen stepped closer.

“Careful.”

Claire noticed mud on his shoes.

Fresh mud.

And a reddish clay stain along the lower edge of his trousers.

The estate grounds were dark loam.

But the abandoned Whitmore quarry north of the property had red clay.

Daniel had once taken Claire there.

Old maintenance buildings still stood near the quarry lake.

She kept her face neutral.

Owen reached for the broken watch.

Claire stepped back.

“You said not to touch things.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

The front door opened.

Detective Ortiz entered with two uniformed officers.

Owen’s expression hardened.

Claire almost smiled.

“I shared my location with her.”

That was the one thing Claire had done correctly.

Ortiz separated them.

Inside the house, police discovered fibers from nylon restraints in another room, along with Daniel’s partial fingerprint on a drinking glass.

The evidence still did not prove kidnapping.

But it proved he had been there.

Ortiz pulled Claire aside.

“You disobey me again, you may destroy the case you’re trying to build.”

“I’m trying to find my husband.”

“And I’m trying to make sure you don’t give whoever has him advance warning.”

Claire thought of telling Margaret about Red Thread.

Shame burned.

“You’re right.”

Ortiz looked toward Owen.

“He’s lawyered up.”

“What happens now?”

“We follow what we can prove.”

That evening, police requested traffic-camera footage covering roads around the estate.

One camera showed Owen’s Range Rover leaving the East Gate road at 2:14 a.m. three nights earlier.

A second camera eight miles north caught the same vehicle forty minutes later.

Heading toward the old Whitmore quarry.

Claire and Ortiz watched the footage together.

Then another vehicle appeared.

A silver Mercedes.

Evelyn whispered, “That’s Margaret’s.”

Ortiz froze the frame.

Two vehicles.

Same route.

Same night Daniel disappeared.

Claire looked at her mother.

“You said Margaret did terrible things.”

Evelyn’s face became hollow.

“I never told you the worst one.”

“What could be worse?”

May you like

Evelyn stared at Daniel’s image on the screen.

“Jonathan was still alive when Margaret decided what mattered more than saving him.”
