Chapter 7 - The Price of Eighteen Minutes

Evelyn gave her formal statement at the police station.

Claire listened from across the table.

“Jonathan was on the floor,” Evelyn said. “He was conscious at first.”

Detective Ortiz asked, “What did Margaret do?”

“She opened his safe.”

“With what authority?”

“None.”

“What was inside?”

“Corporate records. A handwritten ledger. Property deeds. Copies of wire instructions.”

“The red ledger?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s hands shook.

“She told me to put everything into a document case.”

“And Mr. Whitmore?”

“He told us to stop.”

“Did he ask for medical help?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ortiz continued gently.

“What happened next?”

“Margaret said if we called immediately, Jonathan would survive long enough to destroy her.”

The room went silent.

Claire opened her eyes.

“What exactly did she say?”

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

“She said, ‘Eighteen minutes can save an empire.’”

Claire recoiled.

“Why eighteen?”

“It was how long Margaret believed the ambulance would take from the nearest station after the storm.”

“But she delayed eighteen minutes before calling.”

“Yes.”

“Did she know he might die?”

“Yes.”

The word changed the room.

Whether prosecutors could prove criminal liability after so many years would be for them to decide.

But morally, Claire no longer had uncertainty.

Her mother had remained in the room.

Margaret had chosen money over a dying man.

“And you?” Claire asked.

“I obeyed.”

“Why didn’t you leave and call from outside?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of prison?”

“Yes.”

“Of losing your job?”

“Yes.”

“More afraid than Jonathan was?”

Evelyn lowered her head.

“I have asked myself that every night for twenty years.”

Ortiz stopped Claire.

“This is a witness interview.”

“She’s my mother.”

“And right now she is also a witness.”

Claire stood and walked out.

In the corridor, Naomi waited.

“How bad?”

“Worse.”

Naomi handed her a tablet.

“It’s getting worse somewhere else too.”

Whitmore Holdings had announced an emergency board meeting.

Margaret had invoked Daniel’s unexplained absence and asked the board to appoint her interim executive chair.

“Can she?”

“She controls three board seats directly and influences two more through the family trust.”

“What happens to Daniel?”

“If he remains missing, they may remove him as CEO temporarily.”

“Which gives Margaret access to the twenty-six million he quarantined.”

“Not automatically. But she can challenge the trust transfer.”

Claire stared at the announcement.

Margaret was using Daniel’s disappearance to seize the company Daniel had been trying to protect from her.

The board meeting took place the next morning in Manhattan.

Claire entered the Whitmore tower despite her canceled badge because Naomi had obtained guest access from an independent director.

Margaret sat at the head of the table.

Six directors surrounded her.

Owen stood near the wall.

Margaret looked at Claire.

“This is a board meeting.”

“And Daniel is my husband.”

“You have no voting rights.”

“I have evidence your interim chair may be connected to his disappearance.”

Several directors looked up.

Margaret remained calm.

“Claire has been under emotional strain.”

Claire placed printed traffic images on the table.

“Your car and Owen’s car traveled toward the quarry the night Daniel vanished.”

Margaret glanced at them.

“My driver uses that vehicle.”

“Who was driving?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You expect the board to give you control of a billion-dollar company while you can’t remember where you were three nights ago?”

A director named Harold Finch cleared his throat.

“Margaret?”

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

Then she struck back.

She placed a bank document on the table.

“Daniel transferred twenty-six million dollars without full board notification.”

Murmurs erupted.

Margaret continued.

“He placed those funds into something called Mercer Strategic Trust.”

Every eye turned toward Claire.

“Named,” Margaret said, “for his wife’s family.”

Claire’s face burned.

“This has nothing to do with me.”

“Then why your name?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret smiled sadly for the board.

“My son appears to have transferred company funds into a structure associated with his wife immediately before disappearing.”

Claire realized the trap.

Margaret was making Daniel’s protective action look like embezzlement.

Then she produced another document.

An email printed from Daniel’s account.

I can’t keep doing this. Claire wants more than I can give. I need to get away from both of them.

Claire stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“My son sent it to me.”

“That doesn’t sound like him.”

Margaret leaned forward.

“You wanted his voice, Claire.”

She pressed a button on her phone.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“I need to get away from Claire.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Margaret ended the recording.

The board voted.

Margaret became interim executive chair by four votes to two.

As Claire left, humiliated and furious, Naomi caught her arm.

“That audio was edited.”

“How do you know?”

“There’s a cut before your name.”

Claire looked back through the glass wall.

May you like

Margaret was smiling.

Naomi whispered, “Which means somewhere there may be an original.”
