Chapter 3 - Administrative Leave

By noon, Laura had lost access to every Vale Meridian system.

Her email.

Treasury dashboards.

Bank portals.

Acquisition files.

Even the company messaging platform.

Someone had planned the shutdown carefully.

Adrian paced the yacht’s study.

“I’ll reverse it.”

Laura stood by the window watching Palm Beach shrink behind the marina glass as Aurelia remained docked.

“You’re CEO. Why haven’t you already?”

“Marcus says the suspension was approved by the executive committee.”

“Who called the meeting?”

“My mother.”

“And you?”

“I was flying.”

“How convenient.”

Adrian winced.

“You think I planned this?”

“I think you knew more than you told me.”

“That doesn’t mean I knew she was going to attack you.”

Laura believed that part.

She wished it helped.

Her phone rang.

Evelyn Park.

Laura answered immediately.

Evelyn was a corporate attorney and Laura’s closest friend outside the Vale family.

“I got your message,” Evelyn said. “Are you safe?”

“For the moment.”

“Did Adrian actually hit you?”

Laura looked toward him.

“Yes.”

Adrian lowered his head.

Evelyn was silent for a beat.

“Photograph your face and shoulder. Do not delete anything. Do not let anyone touch the yacht system. And Laura?”

“Yes?”

“Get off that boat.”

Laura looked at the Hudson folder.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“I found a forged CFO certification on a forty-six-million-dollar acquisition.”

Evelyn stopped sounding like a friend.

She sounded like a lawyer.

“Do not explain that over an unsecured call.”

Laura swallowed.

“There’s security footage.”

“Make copies.”

Adrian interrupted.

“The video system is locked to the yacht network.”

Evelyn heard him.

“Then call the security vendor and preserve the server.”

Victoria appeared in the doorway.

“There will be no copies taken off this vessel.”

Laura looked at her.

“You no longer get to give me instructions.”

Victoria’s gaze shifted toward the folder.

“That document is confidential corporate property.”

“It contains my forged signature.”

“Allegedly.”

Laura moved toward the hall.

Victoria blocked her.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Mom, move.”

Victoria’s voice dropped.

“You have no idea what she’s about to do to you.”

Adrian stiffened.

Laura noticed.

Not the words.

His reaction.

“What does she mean?”

“Nothing.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“Ask your husband why Hudson needs to close before Friday.”

Laura turned to Adrian.

“Why?”

He looked trapped.

Then the lights flickered.

The security monitor in the galley went dark.

Laura ran.

By the time she reached the galley, the camera indicator was off.

Adrian swore.

Victoria followed at a walking pace.

“What happened?” she asked innocently.

Laura grabbed the wall tablet.

SECURITY SERVER OFFLINE.

Adrian pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling Theo.”

Theo Marks managed Vale Meridian’s digital security systems.

Laura caught Adrian’s wrist.

“No.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because whoever planned my suspension knew the exact moment to kill my access. I’m not assuming anyone is neutral.”

Victoria laughed.

“This is paranoia.”

Laura turned.

“No. Paranoia is fear without evidence. I have a bruise, a forged signature, a coordinated suspension, and a camera that died minutes after I said I was preserving footage.”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

Laura called the yacht’s outside security contractor directly.

A technician answered.

She gave the system number.

He paused.

“That account was remotely placed into maintenance mode eleven minutes ago.”

“By whom?”

“I can’t disclose administrative credentials verbally.”

“Can you preserve the recordings?”

Another pause.

“There is an automatic cloud mirror.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

Laura saw it.

“Preserve everything from seven this morning onward.”

The technician said, “I can flag it under incident retention, but the account owner can override unless there’s a legal hold.”

Evelyn’s voice came from Laura’s phone.

“I’m emailing one now.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You have no authority to interfere with company systems.”

Evelyn replied through the speaker.

“Mrs. Vale, I’m advising Laura personally. Evidence relating to an alleged assault and suspected document forgery is not yours to erase.”

Victoria stared at the phone as though she wanted to crush it.

Adrian’s phone rang.

Marcus.

He answered.

“Not now.”

Marcus spoke loudly enough for Laura to hear.

“The board needs you on a call immediately. Laura has downloaded confidential acquisition materials.”

Laura stared.

“I downloaded nothing.”

Marcus continued, “We also received a complaint alleging she threatened Victoria.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

Victoria said nothing.

Laura felt something inside her settle.

Not fear.

Strategy.

“They need a story,” she told Evelyn.

Evelyn answered, “Then make sure they can’t control all the evidence.”

A message appeared on Laura’s phone from an unknown number.

No greeting.

No name.

Just a photograph.

It showed Victoria in a waterfront restaurant three weeks earlier.

Across the table sat Marcus Reed.

Between them lay a blue folder.

PROJECT HUDSON.

Under the photograph were six words.

May you like

They have been planning this for months.
