Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Took the Photograph

Laura did not show Adrian the message.
That was her first mistake.
At two that afternoon, she left Aurelia with the Hudson folder hidden inside her tote bag.
Adrian followed her down the gangway.
“Where are you going?”
“A hotel.”
“Come home.”
“The yacht is your mother’s territory. The house is your mother’s territory. The company is your mother’s territory.”
“It’s our house.”
“Then tell her to leave it.”
He hesitated.
That answer was enough.
Laura continued walking.
“Laura.”
She stopped without turning.
“I know I failed you.”
She gave a hollow laugh.
“You slapped me.”
“I know.”
“You saw your mother crying and me standing there, and you chose violence before truth.”
“I will regret that for the rest of my life.”
“Good.”
He absorbed it.
She finally faced him.
“But regret isn’t trust.”
A black sedan waited for her.
Evelyn had sent it.
Laura climbed in.
Only after the marina disappeared behind her did she open the anonymous message again.
She replied.
Who are you?
No answer.
At the Breakers, Evelyn was waiting in a private sitting room.
She examined Laura’s shoulder.
A dark bruise was forming.
Her cheek was faintly swollen.
“You need documentation.”
“I took pictures.”
“And a doctor.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re pregnant.”
Laura closed her eyes.
“I know.”
That afternoon, a physician confirmed she and the baby appeared stable, though Laura was told to return immediately if symptoms developed.
Evelyn photographed every document.
Then they studied Hudson.
The acquisition target had been valued at $46 million.
Its reported annual earnings were $7.2 million.
But Laura remembered seeing less than half that number.
“Someone rewrote the books,” she said.
Evelyn tapped the ownership section.
“Lakewood Nominee Trust.”
“No beneficial owner disclosed.”
“Which would be a massive issue if the owner is related to Vale Meridian.”
Laura’s phone buzzed.
The unknown sender again.
Room 418. Ten minutes. Come alone.
Evelyn hated it.
“You are not going.”
“I’m going.”
“Laura.”
“If someone inside this mess wants to help, we need them before Monday.”
Evelyn looked furious.
“Then I’m standing outside.”
Ten minutes later, Laura knocked on Room 418.
The door opened.
Elena Ruiz stood there.
Laura knew her instantly.
Elena had been Aurelia’s chief stewardess for nearly six years.
“Where were you this morning?” Laura asked.
Elena looked terrified.
“Mrs. Vale sent the entire service crew ashore.”
“Why?”
“She said she wanted privacy.”
“And you took the photograph?”
Elena nodded.
“I was at Mariner’s Club picking up documents for Captain Ross. I saw her with Mr. Reed.”
“Why didn’t you tell me then?”
“Because two years ago I saw something else.”
Laura waited.
Elena closed the door.
“Mrs. Vale had me deliver an envelope to Mr. Reed. I thought it was company papers. I saw cash inside.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know. A lot.”
“Why stay silent?”
“My husband had cancer then. Vale Meridian insurance was paying for his treatment. Mrs. Vale reminded me of that.”
Laura’s anger sharpened.
“Did she threaten you?”
“She didn’t have to.”
Elena reached into her handbag.
“I saved this.”
It was a printed staffing email from Victoria.
Saturday: all galley and service staff off vessel from 7:30 A.M. until further notice. Do not disable internal security.
Laura read the last sentence twice.
Do not disable internal security.
“She wanted the camera running,” Laura whispered.
Elena nodded.
“Maybe she wanted footage of whatever she planned.”
Evelyn, listening from the adjoining door Laura had deliberately left unlatched, stepped inside.
“Or she intended to control the footage afterward.”
Elena looked startled.
Laura said, “She tried.”
Then Elena handed over something worse.
A screenshot of a text Victoria had accidentally sent to the crew management thread before deleting it.
Once Adrian sees her lose control, he’ll do the rest.
Laura stared.
“Did anyone else see this?”
“Three crew members.”
“Will they talk?”
Elena looked uncertain.
“If they still have jobs.”
Laura realized the scale of Victoria’s confidence.
She did not merely control Adrian emotionally.
She controlled salaries, insurance, housing, careers.
People around her had learned silence was safer.
Laura’s phone rang.
Adrian.
She answered.
His voice was strained.
“Where are you?”
“Why?”
“The board received something.”
“What?”
“A video.”
Laura felt cold.
“What video?”
“It shows you screaming at my mother last month in the Palm Beach house.”
Laura remembered.
Victoria had accused Laura of marrying Adrian for money. Laura had finally shouted at her to stay out of their marriage.
Adrian continued.
“The clip begins after whatever Mom said to you.”
“Of course it does.”
“It looks bad.”
Laura almost laughed.
“Is that why you called?”
“No. I called because Marcus says there are more.”
Laura stared at Evelyn.
“How many?”
“Enough that the board is discussing termination for cause.”
Laura’s silence hardened.
Then Adrian added quietly:
May you like
“And one of them came from my phone.”
