Chapter 1 - The Upstairs Camera

“She slapped Emma and threatened her not to tell us!”
Celeste Hart was already screaming inches from Maria Alvarez’s face when Daniel rushed into the great room of Raven Peak Chalet.
Two Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies stood between the women.
Seven-year-old Emma was crying beside the staircase, clutching her stuffed rabbit so tightly that its worn pink ears disappeared between her shaking fingers.
Outside, a violent Colorado blizzard hammered the chalet windows. Snow erased the mountains beyond the glass.
Maria looked horrified.
“That never happened!”
Celeste pointed at her with furious certainty. “Look at my daughter and call her a liar again!”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
Maria had cared for Emma since she was fourteen months old. She had slept beside Emma’s crib during pneumonia, learned every allergy, every nightmare, every peculiar rule about which stuffed animals were allowed beneath the blanket.
Now police were standing in Daniel’s home, and one accusation could destroy her life.
“Daniel,” Maria pleaded. “I swear to you. I never laid a hand on Emma.”
“Of course she’s begging,” Celeste snapped. “She knows the police are here.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
Celeste was thirty-nine, elegant even in a cream sweater and snow boots, usually composed enough to make anger look like strategy.
Tonight she looked frantic.
Daniel turned toward his daughter.
“Emma.”
Her lower lip trembled.
“Sweetheart, tell me what happened.”
Emma stared at the floor.
Celeste immediately stepped closer.
“It’s okay, baby. Tell Daddy what Maria did.”
Emma shrank.
Daniel noticed.
“Celeste, give her room.”
“I’m her mother.”
“Give her room.”
Something flashed across Celeste’s face.
Then Emma whispered two words.
“Daddy… upstairs camera.”
Silence.
Daniel slowly raised his eyes toward the security camera mounted near the staircase.
He looked at Celeste.
“You told me that camera was broken.”
“It is,” she answered.
Too fast.
From behind them, Grant Keller, Raven Peak’s estate security officer, spoke.
“No, sir.”
Everyone turned.
Grant was a former sheriff’s investigator who had managed security for Daniel’s properties for six years.
“It came back online this morning. I replaced the failed power module.”
The room went still.
Maria turned toward Celeste.
Celeste’s confidence flickered.
Daniel pointed toward the private security study.
“Pull the recording.”
Celeste stepped in front of the doorway.
“Daniel, this is insane. Emma already told us what happened.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Then the video should prove you right.”
Celeste said nothing.
Maria’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice steadied.
“Unless Emma was never the one lying.”
Celeste spun toward her.
“Shut your mouth.”
Daniel felt something inside him change.
Fear became suspicion.
Grant led them into the study.
One deputy remained beside Maria.
The other stayed close to Celeste.
Emma would not release Daniel’s hand.
Grant entered the timestamp Celeste had given police.
7:18 P.M.
The hallway footage loaded slowly.
Celeste’s breathing accelerated.
Daniel noticed.
“Why do you look more afraid than Maria?”
She rushed toward the computer.
“Turn it off!”
Daniel blocked her.
The image sharpened.
Emma appeared at the top of the stairs.
Alone.
She held the stuffed rabbit.
Then Celeste entered the frame.
Daniel leaned closer.
On screen, Celeste grabbed Emma’s wrist.
The recording had audio.
“Where is it?”
Emma’s small recorded voice answered, “I don’t know.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“Mommy, stop.”
Celeste slapped her.
Not hard enough to knock her down.
Hard enough to make Emma cry.
Maria covered her mouth.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The Celeste beside him whispered, “Daniel—”
On the recording, Celeste crouched and gripped Emma’s shoulders.
“You are going downstairs and telling Daddy that Maria hit you.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“Then Maria goes away forever.”
“No!”
“And if you tell anyone what really happened, I’ll make sure Daddy loses this house too.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
Celeste had gone white.
But the recording continued.
Emma cried, “Maria didn’t do anything.”
Celeste leaned close to her face.
“Maria saw the papers.”
Daniel’s eyes sharpened.
“What papers?”
Nobody answered.
On screen, Celeste continued.
“She should have minded her own business.”
Emma whispered, “I want Daddy.”
“You will tell him Maria slapped you. Do you understand?”
“No.”
Celeste snatched the stuffed rabbit.
Emma screamed.
Celeste held it over the stair railing.
“Then Bunny goes outside in the snow.”
“Stop!”
“Say it.”
Emma sobbed.
“Maria hit me.”
Celeste handed the rabbit back.
“Again.”
“Maria hit me.”
“Good girl.”
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Maria began crying.
Not loudly.
With relief.
One deputy turned toward Celeste.
“Mrs. Hart, step away from Mr. Hart and the child.”
Celeste stared at Daniel.
“You don’t understand.”
Daniel’s voice was almost inaudible.
“You hit our daughter.”
“I was trying to protect this family.”
“From Maria?”
Celeste looked toward her.
Maria’s face changed.
She knew something.
Daniel saw it.
“Maria.”
Maria hesitated.
Celeste snapped, “Don’t.”
Daniel turned fully toward the woman who had cared for his daughter for six years.
“What papers?”
Maria swallowed.
“Documents I found this afternoon.”
“Where?”
“In the upstairs linen room.”
Celeste closed her eyes.
Maria continued.
“They had your name on them.”
“What kind of documents?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“Maria.”
“One looked like a sale agreement.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“For what?”
Maria looked around the chalet.
“For Raven Peak.”
Daniel stared at Celeste.
Raven Peak Chalet was not merely a vacation home.
Thirty percent belonged to Emma’s irrevocable trust.
Any sale required Daniel’s approval and independent trustee consent.
“I never agreed to sell this house.”
Celeste whispered, “It isn’t what you think.”
Maria reached into her sweater pocket.
The deputy immediately stopped her.
“Slowly.”
Maria nodded and withdrew her phone.
“I took one picture before Mrs. Hart came upstairs.”
She opened it.
Daniel enlarged the image.
A document lay on a table.
RAVEN PEAK HOLDINGS LLC — ASSET TRANSFER AGREEMENT.
Purchase price:
$18,400,000.
Buyer:
Crestline Capital Partners.
Daniel’s gaze moved toward the signature page.
His name was already there.
DANIEL HART.
He had never signed it.
Below his forged signature was another.
JULIAN CROSS.
Chief Financial Officer of Hart Alpine Lodges.
Daniel’s oldest executive ally.
Celeste’s breathing changed.
Daniel looked at her.
“What did Julian sign?”
She said nothing.
The deputy asked Celeste to turn around.
She did not move.
Then Emma spoke from behind Daniel.
“Daddy?”
He turned.
She was holding Bunny against her chest again.
“I saw Uncle Julian upstairs too.”
Daniel froze.
Julian was not her uncle.
Emma simply called him that because he had been around the family for years.
“When?”
“Today.”
“What was he doing?”
Emma looked toward Celeste.
Her mother stared back.
Daniel stepped between them.
“You can tell me.”
Emma whispered, “Mommy gave him your black key.”
Daniel’s blood went cold.
His black hardware security key authenticated corporate banking transfers and board approvals.
He kept it locked inside his private study.
No one was supposed to touch it.
Daniel looked at Celeste.
The deputies moved closer.
Outside, the blizzard slammed snow against the windows like gravel.
Inside, Daniel realized the accusation against Maria had never been the real crime.
May you like
It had been a cover.
And whatever Celeste and Julian Cross had been doing upstairs involved his daughter, his company, and a forged eighteen-million-dollar sale.
