Chapter 11 - Julian’s Long Game

Priya reconstructed Aurelia’s collapse.
The pattern was ugly.
Julian had introduced Celeste to expensive expansion opportunities.
New York.
Los Angeles.
Aspen.
Each required debt.
Each projection assumed unrealistic growth.
Celeste signed anyway.
“Did he falsify projections?” Daniel asked.
“Some forecasts came from White Summit.”
“So his company advised her to borrow.”
“Yes.”
“And later his company took Hart Alpine money.”
“Yes.”
“And Crestline funded the debt.”
“Yes.”
“Then Crestline planned to buy Hart Alpine.”
“Yes.”
Daniel leaned back.
“Trap.”
Priya shook her head.
“Maybe.”
“Why maybe?”
“Because Celeste was not helpless.”
That mattered.
She had signed the loans.
Hidden them.
Pledged assets she did not own.
Forged consent.
Framed Maria.
Threatened Emma.
Julian could have exploited her without erasing her responsibility.
Daniel was learning to hold two truths at once.
It was unpleasant.
The special committee uncovered emails between Julian and Crestline partner Marcus Bell.
One was dated twenty-three months earlier.
C.H. wants growth more than husband will fund.
Another:
Pressure creates optionality.
Another:
If Aurelia requires rescue, family assets become negotiable.
Daniel read them slowly.
Caroline Ames sat across from him.
“I owe you an apology.”
“For suspending me?”
“No.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Good.”
“For assuming the marital issue was unrelated noise.”
“It was partly noise.”
“It was also access.”
Julian had used the affair to get close to Celeste’s financial desperation and Daniel’s private information.
Caroline continued.
“The board still has concerns about your oversight.”
“It should.”
“We may offer reinstatement when this is over.”
Daniel surprised himself.
“I’m not sure I want it.”
Caroline studied him.
“That may be the first intelligent thing you’ve said since this began.”
He laughed.
“Everyone is becoming cruel.”
“Perspective.”
“Maria got to you.”
The criminal investigation expanded.
Celeste’s attorneys began negotiating.
Not a plea.
Not yet.
A proffer.
She wanted prosecutors to hear what she knew about Julian.
Maya told Daniel this did not mean Celeste would escape consequences.
“She is trying to improve her position.”
“She should.”
Maya raised an eyebrow.
Daniel continued.
“I want truth more than I want her crushed.”
“That is healthier.”
“I still want consequences.”
“Also healthy.”
Emma’s supervised visit with Celeste was scheduled the next week.
Emma refused.
The court did not force immediate contact.
Daniel was relieved.
Then Dr. Morris challenged him.
“Be careful not to reward refusal.”
“She’s afraid.”
“Yes.”
“So why shouldn’t I support her?”
“You support the feeling, not necessarily the permanent conclusion.”
Daniel frowned.
“You think Celeste should see her?”
“I think Emma’s long-term relationship with her mother is a therapeutic and legal question, not a revenge tool.”
Daniel absorbed that.
He had been imagining never letting Celeste near Emma again.
Maybe that would become necessary.
Maybe not.
But it could not be decided by his anger.
That evening Emma video-called Maria.
Daniel overheard from the kitchen.
“Are you coming back?”
Maria smiled from her sister’s apartment.
“Maybe later.”
“Dad makes bad sandwiches.”
“I know.”
Daniel shouted, “I can hear you.”
Emma laughed.
The sound filled the house.
Then Maria asked, “How is Bunny?”
Emma held the rabbit up.
“Good.”
“Any more keys inside?”
Emma giggled.
“No.”
Then her face became serious.
“Mommy put something in Bunny too.”
Daniel stopped moving.
Maria’s expression changed carefully.
“What do you mean?”
“The little card.”
Daniel entered.
“Emma, sweetheart, remember what Dr. Morris said? You don’t have to answer questions about the case.”
“I’m not answering. I remembered.”
He sat beside her.
“Okay.”
Emma touched the rabbit’s coat.
“Mommy was sewing that night.”
“What night?”
“I don’t know.”
“Before the police?”
She nodded.
Maria looked at Daniel through the screen.
The microSD card.
Celeste had hidden it deliberately.
Why?
Daniel had assumed she wanted to keep it from police.
But the card contained recordings incriminating Julian and Celeste.
If Celeste wanted evidence destroyed, why conceal it inside Emma’s favorite toy instead of breaking it?
Maya listened to the theory later.
“You think Celeste was preserving evidence.”
“Maybe.”
“Without telling anyone.”
“Maybe because she feared Julian.”
“Or maybe because she planned to use it as leverage.”
Daniel nodded.
Both fit.
Investigators reexamined the microSD metadata.
Most files had been copied to the card two days before the false accusation against Maria.
One audio file had a timestamp from the morning of the blizzard.
It had not been opened during the first review because its header was corrupted.
Forensic specialists repaired it.
Celeste’s voice came first.
“If something happens, this proves you knew.”
Julian laughed.
“Something happens?”
“You’re setting me up.”
“You’re paranoid.”
“You created White Summit. You introduced Crestline. You told me the trust consent would never be checked.”
“And you signed every loan.”
“You told me Daniel would approve the sale.”
“He would have if you could still control him.”
Silence.
Then Celeste said:
“I am not going to prison for you.”
Julian answered:
“Then make sure Maria never tells Daniel what she saw.”
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the speaker.
The false accusation had been Celeste’s idea.
May you like
But Julian had encouraged the removal of Maria.
And Celeste had secretly recorded the conversation because she already knew her lover might sacrifice her.
