Chapter 7 - Emma’s Version

The child therapist told Daniel something he did not want to hear.
“Stop asking Emma for facts.”
“I barely ask.”
“You ask with your face.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means she watches you react.”
Dr. Lena Morris sat across from him.
“If she says something about Celeste and sees relief, anger, or shock, she learns which answers affect you.”
“So I’m supposed to be blank?”
“No. You’re supposed to be her father, not an investigator.”
Daniel looked toward the playroom window.
Emma was arranging wooden animals beside Bunny.
“What if she remembers something important?”
“She can tell the proper interviewer.”
Daniel nodded.
Another piece of control he had to surrender.
After the session, Emma climbed into the car.
“Can Maria come home?”
“She is home.”
“I mean stay forever.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Maria gets to decide where Maria stays.”
Emma considered that.
“Mommy used to say Maria belongs to us.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“People don’t belong to people.”
“She said because we pay her.”
Daniel gripped the steering wheel.
He remembered all the times Celeste had called Maria “one of us.”
Maybe Maria had heard the difference all along.
At Raven Peak, Maria had packed two suitcases.
Daniel stopped in the doorway.
“You’re leaving?”
“For a while.”
“Why?”
Maria folded a sweater.
“My lawyer says I should not live in the center of this case.”
“Where will you go?”
“My sister in Denver.”
“Emma will be devastated.”
Maria looked at him sharply.
“That cannot be the reason I stay.”
He closed his eyes.
“You’re right.”
“I love her.”
“I know.”
“But I am not her mother.”
“No.”
“And I need to remember I have a life outside this house.”
Daniel nodded.
“When will you tell her?”
“Together.”
Emma cried.
She accused Maria of leaving because she had lied.
Maria held her face gently.
“No, corazón. I am leaving because grown-ups need boundaries.”
“Are you mad at me?”
“Never.”
“Mommy made me.”
“I know.”
“You still love me?”
Maria smiled through tears.
“More than before, because now I know how brave you had to be.”
After Maria left, Raven Peak felt enormous.
Daniel realized how much invisible labor she had performed.
Meals.
Medication.
School schedules.
Laundry.
Emotional temperature.
Celeste had always joked that Maria “ran the house.”
It was not a joke.
Daniel had simply never understood the value of work he did not have to notice.
That night Grant called him into the security study.
“I recovered part of the disabled west-corridor footage.”
“How?”
“Camera itself retained a local cache before the network command shut it down.”
The clip showed Celeste and Julian arguing.
No audio at first.
Then Grant enhanced the local microphone channel.
Julian’s voice appeared.
“…you said Maria didn’t see the signature page.”
Celeste answered, “She saw enough.”
“What about Emma?”
“She doesn’t understand.”
“She saw me with the key.”
“Then I’ll handle Emma.”
Daniel felt sick.
Julian said, “Don’t make this worse.”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“You’re worried now?”
“I’m worried because you are panicking.”
“I am not panicking.”
“You called the sheriff on your own nanny.”
Daniel leaned closer.
Celeste answered:
“I needed Maria out of the house before Daniel asked her what she saw.”
There it was.
A motive for the false accusation.
Then Julian said something unexpected.
“You were supposed to get Daniel to sign the real package. Not forge the trust consent.”
Celeste turned on him.
“He reads things now.”
Julian laughed.
“Since when?”
Daniel shut his eyes.
His carelessness had been a known weakness.
A tool.
Celeste continued.
“After the Denver refinancing he started asking questions.”
Julian replied, “Then we wait.”
“I don’t have time.”
“Because of Crestline?”
“Because of the note.”
“What note?”
“Aurelia note matures in thirty-one days.”
Julian cursed.
Celeste whispered, “If I default, they come after everything I pledged.”
“You pledged assets you don’t own.”
“I know.”
“What exactly did you pledge?”
Celeste looked directly toward the camera that she believed was disabled.
“Raven Peak.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“And my Hart Alpine shares.”
Julian stared at her.
“You told me only Raven Peak.”
“I lied.”
He laughed once, without humor.
“You lied to me too.”
Celeste answered quietly.
“I was trying to survive.”
Julian stepped closer.
“No. You were trying to keep your life looking expensive.”
The clip ended.
Daniel sat back.
For the first time, he understood that Celeste and Julian were not one united enemy.
They had been lying to each other too.
Grant looked at him.
“Useful?”
“Very.”
Then the security system produced another recovered frame.
Celeste stood alone in the hallway ten minutes later.
She was holding a blue folder.
On the cover:
AURELIA PERSONAL GUARANTEES.

She opened Emma’s bedroom door.
And carried the folder inside.
