Chapter 1 - Press Play

Eight-year-old Lily was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe while her own mother gripped her wrist.

“Tell me where you hid my mother’s bracelet!”

“I didn’t take it!”

Rachel pulled her closer.

“Stop lying to my face.”

“I’m not lying!”

Fifteen-year-old Jake came out of the hallway so quickly he almost collided with the console table.

“Mom, let her go.”

Rachel ignored him.

Jake stepped between them.

“I said let her go.”

Rachel shoved him.

Her hand caught his face as he stumbled sideways, her fingernails scraping across his cheek.

Jake sucked in a breath.

A red line appeared beneath his left eye.

And at that exact moment, the front door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

He was still holding his leather work bag.

For three seconds he simply stared.

Lily crying.

Jake standing protectively in front of her.

Rachel breathing hard.

The fresh scratch across his son’s cheek.

“What happened?”

Rachel answered immediately.

“She stole from my mother.”

Lily shook her head desperately.

“Dad, I swear I didn’t!”

Daniel dropped his bag.

“What did she supposedly steal?”

“My mother’s bracelet. The gold one with the sapphire clasp.”

Daniel knew it.

Helen had worn the antique bracelet to every Christmas dinner he could remember.

Rachel pointed at Lily.

“She was upstairs near my jewelry drawer this morning. Now it’s gone.”

“I was looking for my library book!”

“Then where is the bracelet?”

“I don’t know!”

Daniel moved toward his daughter.

Rachel continued.

“She has been lying for weeks.”

Jake stared at his mother.

“No, she hasn’t.”

Rachel snapped around.

“You stay out of this.”

“I was here.”

“You’re protecting her.”

“I saw what you did.”

For the first time, Rachel looked nervous.

Daniel noticed.

He crouched in front of Lily.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“Did you touch Grandma Helen’s bracelet?”

“No.”

“Did you take anything from Mom’s room?”

“No.”

Daniel believed the fear in her face.

But he had also spent fifteen years telling both children that accusations required facts.

He stood.

“Then we search calmly.”

Rachel laughed sharply.

“Calmly? She stole an heirloom.”

Jake looked at Daniel.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Ask her why she needed Lily to confess before you came home.”

Rachel went still.

Daniel slowly turned.

“What does that mean?”

Jake reached toward his pocket.

Rachel saw it.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Jake.”

He stopped.

She stepped toward him.

“Don’t.”

There was fear in her voice now.

Not irritation.

Fear.

Then something slipped from the pocket of Rachel’s jeans.

It struck the hardwood floor.

Clink.

Nobody moved.

A gold bracelet lay between them.

Its sapphire clasp caught the afternoon light.

Lily stopped crying.

Jake looked down.

Daniel stared at Rachel.

“It was in your pocket.”

Rachel’s face drained of color.

“I must have put it there earlier.”

Jake shook his head.

“No.”

Rachel’s eyes moved toward him.

“Jake.”

“You knew it was there.”

He pulled out his black smartphone.

Daniel looked from the phone to his wife.

“How do you know?”

Jake unlocked it.

“Because I recorded her.”

Rachel lunged.

“Give me that.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“No.”

“Daniel, he recorded me without permission.”

“In our house?”

“That isn’t the point.”

“It is right now.”

Jake pressed play.

Rachel’s recorded voice filled the foyer.

“Just say you took it, Lily.”

Lily’s voice answered through tears.

“But I didn’t.”

“I don’t care. Your father only needs to believe you did.”

Present-day Daniel became motionless.

The recording continued.

Rachel’s voice was colder.

“Once he believes you’re stealing again, he’ll finally agree you need to leave.”

Daniel slowly looked at her.

“Again?”

Rachel said, “She’s taking things out of context.”

Jake frowned.

“There’s more.”

Rachel reached for the phone.

“Stop.”

Daniel blocked her again.

“Who were you talking to?”

Rachel said nothing.

Jake moved the recording forward.

A second adult voice came through the speaker.

Male.

Muffled because Jake had been recording from somewhere nearby.

“And after Lily is gone?”

Rachel answered:

“Then we move to the next part.”

Daniel felt Lily clutch his shirt.

The man spoke again.

“Jake has already started asking questions. He’ll have to—”

Rachel screamed.

“Turn it off!”

Jake almost dropped the phone.

Daniel caught Rachel’s wrist before she could grab it.

“Enough.”

She stared at him.

“If you hear the rest, this family is over.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Jake.

Then at the woman he had been married to for seventeen years.

The unknown man continued through the phone.

“Jake will be easier to discredit. Once both kids are out of the way, Daniel signs the Willowmere papers.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

Willowmere.

His late father’s waterfront estate.

Property held in trust for Jake and Lily.

Property Daniel had refused three separate requests to mortgage.

The recording continued.

Rachel said:

“And if he still refuses?”

The man laughed quietly.

It was only three seconds.

But Daniel knew that laugh.

He had heard it in boardrooms.

On fishing trips.

At his wedding.

At Jake’s baptism.

Daniel whispered one name.

“Caleb.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Caleb Morgan.

Daniel’s business partner.

His company’s chief financial officer.

Jake’s godfather.

And one of the people Daniel trusted most in the world.

The recording continued.

Caleb’s voice said:

“Then we make sure Daniel doesn’t have a choice.”

Daniel pressed pause.

No one spoke.

Then Jake looked at him.

“Dad, what are the Willowmere papers?”

Daniel stared at Rachel.

Her face had changed from panic to calculation.

He knew that expression.

She was already deciding what lie came next.

May you like

And suddenly the bracelet on the floor no longer looked like an heirloom.

It looked like the first piece of evidence in a conspiracy against his own children.
