Chapter 11 - The Brother Jake Needed

Jake stopped sleeping.

Daniel noticed because his bedroom light stayed on at three in the morning.

One night he knocked.

Jake was sitting on the floor with his laptop.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

Audio files.

Rachel’s recording.

“Jake.”

“I’m trying to clean up the background noise.”

“Why?”

“To prove it’s Caleb.”

“We already know.”

“But his lawyers say it’s edited.”

“Experts will handle that.”

Jake stared at him.

“They wouldn’t know anything if I hadn’t recorded it.”

Daniel sat down.

“That does not mean you have to win the case.”

Jake’s jaw tightened.

“What if you lose Willowmere?”

“Then adults deal with it.”

“What if Caleb takes Hartwell?”

“Adults.”

“What if Mom gets custody and makes Lily go away?”

Daniel’s heart tightened.

“Adults.”

Jake finally looked at him.

“You keep saying that now.”

Daniel understood the accusation.

Where were the adults before?

When Rachel was pressuring Lily.

When Jake was watching Caleb.

When he felt responsible for protecting his sister.

Daniel nodded.

“You’re right.”

Jake’s face softened slightly.

“I should have been paying attention sooner.”

“You were working.”

“That isn’t enough.”

Jake looked down.

“Mom said you never noticed anything.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Sometimes she was right.”

The admission mattered.

Jake leaned back against the bed.

“Do you still love her?”

“Yes.”

He hated the answer.

But lying would teach the wrong lesson.

Jake looked shocked.

“After everything?”

“Love doesn’t automatically make someone safe.”

That silenced him.

Daniel continued.

“And anger doesn’t erase seventeen years.”

“What happens now?”

“I divorce her.”

Jake nodded.

“Does Lily know?”

“Not yet.”

“She’ll think it’s her fault.”

“I know.”

They told Lily together the next day.

Not Rachel and Daniel.

Daniel and the court-approved family counselor, because Rachel’s contact remained supervised and the adults agreed not to put the children inside legal negotiations.

Lily cried.

Then asked the exact question Jake predicted.

“Because of the bracelet?”

Daniel knelt.

“No.”

“But if I hadn’t—”

“No.”

He stopped her.

“The problems were already here.”

“Mom did it because of me.”

“Mom made choices because of Mom.”

Lily looked down.

“She hates me.”

Daniel’s chest hurt.

“I don’t believe that.”

“She wanted me gone.”

“Yes.”

He would not lie.

“But people can love someone and still do something terribly wrong to them.”

Lily stared at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“No.”

Daniel brushed hair from her face.

“Sometimes grown-ups don’t make sense.”

The next corporate development came that afternoon.

Caleb’s suspension became formal termination after the special committee found enough evidence of undisclosed conflicts.

Daniel expected Caleb to challenge it.

Instead Caleb resigned first.

His letter accused Daniel of creating a hostile environment and manipulating the audit to retaliate over the affair.

Media outlets received the letter within an hour.

The scandal became public.

HARTWELL CEO’S WIFE HAD AFFAIR WITH CFO AMID CORPORATE FRAUD DISPUTE

Daniel felt humiliated.

Employees whispered.

Clients called.

Lenders demanded reassurance.

Brighton’s leasing partner paused negotiations.

Hartwell’s estimated value dropped almost overnight.

Exactly what Caleb wanted.

At school, Jake heard classmates talking.

One boy asked whether his mother slept with “the money guy.”

Jake hit him.

Not hard enough to cause serious injury.

Hard enough to earn a suspension.

Daniel drove him home in silence.

Jake stared out the window.

“Say it.”

“What?”

“That I screwed up.”

“You did.”

Jake looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

“He was cruel. You still chose to hit him.”

Jake’s eyes filled.

“I’m tired of everybody knowing.”

“I know.”

“I hate Mom.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I hate Caleb.”

Still nothing.

“I hate you for not stopping it.”

That one hurt.

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.”

Jake turned.

“You’re not going to yell?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re already telling the truth.”

At home Jake handed Daniel his phone.

“I found another recording.”

Daniel frowned.

“How?”

“The first file kept running longer than I thought.”

He pressed play.

After Rachel and Caleb discussed Lily and Jake, there was silence.

Then Caleb’s voice returned.

“Once Daniel signs Willowmere, we need the original trust certificate.”

Rachel asked:

“Where is it?”

Caleb:

“His father’s box.”

Daniel froze.

His late father had kept original trust papers in a cedar document case.

Daniel had not opened it in years.

The box was stored at Willowmere.

If Caleb needed the original certificate, Monday’s closing might depend on destroying or replacing it.

Daniel called Elena.

Then security at Willowmere.

No answer.

He tried the caretaker.

Nothing.

Daniel looked at the clock.

May you like

The estate was ninety minutes away.

And someone had just disabled its security system.
