Chapter 2 - Willowmere

Daniel locked the bracelet in his study safe.
Not because it was valuable.
Because it was evidence.
Rachel watched from the doorway.
“This is insane.”
Daniel closed the safe.
“You planted it.”
“No.”
“Jake recorded you telling Lily to confess to something she didn’t do.”
“She misunderstood me.”
“An eight-year-old misunderstood the sentence ‘I don’t care’?”
Rachel folded her arms.
“You’ve already decided I’m guilty.”
Daniel looked at Jake’s scratched cheek.
“I decided I’m listening.”
Rachel glanced toward the stairs where Lily sat with Jake.
Her expression softened for half a second.
Then disappeared.
Daniel saw it.
That frightened him more than if she had felt nothing.
“Why did Lily need to leave?”
Rachel sighed.
“She’s been difficult.”
“She’s eight.”
“She lies.”
“About what?”
“Little things.”
“Name three.”
Rachel hesitated.
Daniel waited.
“She took money from my purse.”
“When?”
“Last month.”
“I never heard about it.”
“I handled it.”
“What else?”
“She broke the porcelain horse in the guest room.”
Jake called down from the landing.
“That was me.”
Rachel looked up sharply.
Jake continued.
“I knocked it over with my backpack. You knew that.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Rachel said, “Fine. One example was wrong.”
“One?”
Jake came downstairs.
“I think she’s been making stuff up about Lily for months.”
Rachel snapped.
“Go upstairs.”
“No.”
“Jake.”
Daniel said quietly, “He stays.”
It was the first direct power reversal of the evening.
Rachel felt it.
Daniel opened Jake’s recording.
“How much did you hear before you started this?”
Jake swallowed.
“I heard Mom on the phone yesterday.”
“With Caleb?”
“I didn’t know.”
“What did she say?”
“Something about Willowmere and getting you to sign before the audit.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“Before what audit?”
She said nothing.
Hartwell Properties, the commercial real-estate company Daniel had built with Caleb twenty-one years earlier, underwent its annual lender audit in six weeks.
Daniel owned fifty-eight percent.
Caleb owned twenty-two.
The rest belonged to senior employees through a restricted stock plan.
Caleb controlled the finances.
Daniel controlled major acquisitions.
Willowmere had nothing directly to do with Hartwell.
That was deliberate.
Daniel’s father had placed the 140-acre Chesapeake Bay property in the Hartwell Family Trust before his death.
Jake and Lily were equal remainder beneficiaries.
Daniel was trustee.
He could sell or mortgage the property only for legitimate trust purposes.
Caleb had spent six months arguing that Hartwell should lease and eventually acquire the land for a luxury resort project.
Daniel refused.
His father had wanted Willowmere preserved for the children.
Rachel knew that.
“So that’s what this is about?”
Rachel shook her head.
“You’re being dramatic.”
“You discussed removing Lily from the house and then getting Willowmere signed.”
“I never said removing her from the house permanently.”
“Where was she going?”
Rachel looked away.
Daniel felt something inside him sink.
“Where?”
“A school.”
Lily heard.
She appeared at the stairs.
“What school?”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Daniel turned.
“Sweetheart, go back upstairs.”
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“Was Mom sending me somewhere?”
Rachel answered.
“It was just an option.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What option?”
“North Pines Academy.”
Jake’s face changed.
“I found that name on her laptop.”
Daniel knew nothing about North Pines.
Rachel said quickly, “It’s a residential school in Pennsylvania. It helps children with behavioral issues.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You applied to send our eight-year-old daughter to a residential school?”
“I requested information.”
Lily began crying again.
Jake put an arm around her.
Daniel’s anger sharpened.
“Without telling me?”
Rachel raised her voice.
“Because every time I try to discipline her, you undermine me!”
“This was not discipline.”
“She needs structure.”
“She needs a mother who doesn’t frame her for theft.”
Rachel flinched.
Daniel immediately regretted saying it in front of Lily.
He crouched.
“Lily, go upstairs with Jake.”
“Are you sending me away?”
“No.”
“You promise?”
“Yes.”
The word came without hesitation.
She searched his face.
Then followed Jake.
Daniel waited until their door closed.
“What was supposed to happen after Lily left?”
Rachel’s eyes hardened.
“You heard the recording.”
“I want to hear you say it.”
“I’m not explaining myself while you’re treating me like a criminal.”
“You planted stolen property and tried to manufacture a confession.”
“It wasn’t stolen.”
“Exactly.”
Rachel stopped.
Daniel moved closer.
“What did Caleb need me to sign?”
“You should ask Caleb.”
“I will.”
Rachel laughed.
“You think he’ll confess because you sound angry?”
“No.”
Daniel picked up his phone.
“I think forensic accountants might help.”
That finally frightened her.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“Don’t call anyone tonight.”
“Why?”
“You’ll blow up the company.”
“How?”
She said nothing.
He dialed his attorney.
Rachel grabbed his arm.
“Listen to me.”
“Get your hand off me.”
She released him.
Then said something that made him stop dialing.
“If you start digging into Hartwell’s books, the bank could freeze the Brighton loan.”
Daniel turned.
The Brighton Center redevelopment was their largest project.
One hundred eighty million dollars.
Forty-seven million in active bank financing.
“How would you know that?”
Rachel’s silence answered.
She knew because Caleb had told her.
Daniel whispered:
“How long have you been discussing company banking with my CFO?”
The front doorbell rang.
Three hard chimes.
Jake called from upstairs.
“Dad?”
Daniel checked the security camera.
Caleb Morgan stood outside.
No coat.
No briefcase.
Just a tense expression and his hands in his pockets.
Rachel whispered:
“Don’t let him in.”
Daniel stared at her.
Five minutes earlier she had protected Caleb.
Now she was afraid of him.
That meant the conspiracy had already begun turning on itself.
Daniel opened the door.
Caleb walked in and immediately looked at Rachel.
“What did you tell him?”
Daniel closed the door behind him.
“Enough to know you’re going to start explaining.”
Caleb stared at his oldest friend.
Then at the safe containing Helen’s bracelet.
May you like
Then at Jake’s phone in Daniel’s hand.
And for the first time in twenty-one years, Daniel saw Caleb Morgan look at him like an enemy.
