Chapter 16 - No Way Back

Michael nearly stopped thinking.

Every instinct screamed one thing.

Get Lily.

He ran toward the door.

Elena blocked him.

“Police.”

“He said no police.”

“I don’t care.”

“He has my daughter.”

“And you think giving him what he wants makes him trustworthy?”

Michael shoved a hand through his hair.

“He has Lily.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

That broke through his panic.

She loved Lily too.

Michael called Andrew.

Andrew called law enforcement.

Within minutes, the house became a command center.

Investigators reviewed exterior cameras.

A masked man had entered through a side service gate using a valid access code.

Only household staff and family knew it.

Elena said, “I changed those codes after the visitation incident.”

“Who had the new one?”

“Me. You. Daniel.”

Michael froze.

“Daniel.”

He called.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Michael’s stomach twisted.

Then Daniel called back.

“Michael?”

“Where are you?”

“At the office.”

“Prove it.”

Silence.

“What?”

“Video call.”

Daniel did.

He was in the Sterling conference room with Claire.

Michael almost collapsed with relief.

Daniel’s face changed when he learned Lily was gone.

“I didn’t give anyone the code.”

“Did Mom?”

“She shouldn’t know it.”

Claire interrupted.

“Your smart-home system syncs family access through the old Sterling security account.”

Michael stared.

Patricia’s account.

She may still have administrative visibility.

Investigators traced Thomas’s call to a burner.

He called again.

“Midnight. Old Saint Adrian Hotel loading dock.”

Michael said, “Let me hear Lily.”

Silence.

Then Lily cried.

Michael closed his eyes.

“I’m coming.”

“Ledger only.”

The line ended.

Federal agents opposed Michael going alone.

A tactical plan formed.

Michael hated every second.

Then Vanessa arrived under escort after hearing what happened through her attorney.

Michael nearly ordered her out.

She said one thing that stopped him.

“Thomas won’t hurt Lily.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because he doesn’t need the ledger.”

Everyone stared.

Vanessa continued.

“He needs Patricia.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“What?”

“Thomas kept evidence against her. She kept evidence against him. The ledger is not valuable because of transactions. It has the location codes for Patricia’s backup accounts.”

Daniel said, “Accounts?”

“Offshore reserves. Emergency money.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know. Maybe thirty million.”

Michael understood.

Thomas was running.

He needed money.

“He thinks I can decode it.”

Vanessa nodded.

“And he knows Patricia will come if she thinks you have the ledger.”

“So Lily is bait for both of us.”

“Yes.”

Michael’s rage sharpened.

Thomas had learned from Patricia.

Use family to move people.

At 11:47 p.m., Michael arrived near Saint Adrian under law-enforcement surveillance.

The hotel had been empty for years during redevelopment litigation.

The same building where Luis Ruiz discovered the first fraud.

Snow drifted through broken loading bays.

Michael carried a decoy ledger.

His phone rang.

“Inside.”

He entered.

A light turned on.

Thomas Reed stood beside a portable crib.

Lily lay inside, bundled in her pink snowsuit and white knitted blanket.

Michael’s knees nearly weakened.

“Give her to me.”

Thomas held up a handgun.

“Ledger.”

Michael stopped.

“You don’t need it.”

Thomas smiled.

“Vanessa talks too much.”

Michael placed the decoy on the floor.

Thomas did not move toward it.

“You brought police.”

“No.”

“You always were a bad liar.”

A voice came from behind.

“Thomas.”

Patricia stepped from the shadows.

Michael stared.

She had come alone.

Or appeared to.

Thomas laughed.

“There she is.”

Patricia looked at Lily.

Something in her face broke.

“Let the baby go.”

Thomas raised the gun slightly.

“You first.”

“I brought what you asked.”

Patricia held a small encrypted drive.

Thomas’s eyes fixed on it.

“The account keys?”

“Yes.”

Michael suddenly understood something.

Patricia had received her own demand.

Thomas had summoned both of them separately.

The confrontation had become unavoidable exactly as he wanted.

Thomas said, “Put it down.”

Patricia did.

Michael watched her.

For once, she looked frightened not for control, not for money.

For Lily.

Thomas moved toward the drive.

Michael’s earpiece carried a faint command from the tactical team.

Wait.

Then a noise echoed from another corridor.

Thomas spun.

Patricia moved first.

She kicked the drive beneath a broken cabinet.

Thomas grabbed her.

Michael lunged toward Lily.

A gunshot exploded.

Not at Michael.

Into the ceiling.

Lily screamed.

Police rushed in.

Thomas dragged Patricia backward, gun against her shoulder.

“Stay back!”

Michael reached the crib and lifted Lily.

He pressed her against his chest.

“You’re okay. Daddy’s here.”

Across the room, Patricia looked at him.

Thomas shouted at officers.

“I walk out or she dies.”

Patricia’s eyes met Michael’s.

For the first time in his life, she did not order him to fix anything.

She said quietly:

May you like

“Take Lily and go.”
