Chapter 8 - The Ledger

Michael dragged Daniel behind a concrete pillar.
The SUV did not hit them.
It stopped twenty feet away.
Patricia’s longtime driver stepped out.
Marcus Hale raised both hands.
“I’m not here to hurt you.”
Daniel stared.
“You followed me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Your mother told me to.”
Michael stepped forward.
“And?”
Marcus looked exhausted.
“I’m done doing what Patricia tells me.”
He had worked for the Sterling family for seventeen years.
Michael trusted him.
Or thought he did.
Marcus glanced toward the garage entrance.
“We should leave.”
They relocated to Andrew’s office.
Marcus placed his phone on the table.
“I deleted the garage video.”
Michael’s chair scraped backward.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Patricia ordered me.”
Michael stood.
Andrew said sharply, “Sit down.”
Michael did not.
Marcus continued.
“The night Vanessa tried to drive drunk, Patricia called me the next morning. She said the footage embarrassed the family.”
“You knew it proved I didn’t attack Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“And you deleted it anyway.”
“Yes.”
Michael wanted to hit him.
Instead, he asked, “Why tell me now?”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Because Patricia told me to follow Daniel tonight and report who he met.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Marcus continued.
“And because four years ago, your father asked me to do something I never did.”
Michael went still.
“What?”
“Give you a letter if I ever believed Patricia was threatening the family.”
Marcus removed an envelope from his coat.
Michael recognized Charles Sterling’s handwriting.
The letter was dated six weeks before Charles died.
Michael,
If you are reading this, I waited too long to tell you something. Your mother has confused control with protection for most of our marriage. I allowed it because I believed I could contain it. I was wrong.
Michael stopped reading.
His hands trembled.
Daniel took the letter and continued aloud.
There are payments I do not understand and decisions carrying your authorization that I do not believe you knowingly made. Thomas Reed told me he would investigate. I no longer trust that he did.
Do not confront Patricia alone. She does not think she is stealing from this family. She thinks everything belongs to her because she kept this company alive during the years I nearly lost it. That belief makes her dangerous.
Daniel’s voice broke.
The last line read:
Protect your brother from becoming what she wanted you to become.
Daniel lowered the page.
Neither brother spoke.
Michael remembered Charles’s final months.
He had been consumed by treatment.
Michael had focused on the company.
Daniel had avoided hospitals.
Patricia had managed everything.
They had never spoken honestly.
Andrew opened the black ledger Daniel had taken.
Inside were initials, dates, percentages, and property codes.
Claire joined by video and compared entries to Sterling acquisitions.
“Those percentages match overpayments,” she said.
One entry read:
HA—3.5%—V
Halberg acquisition.
V likely meant Vanessa.
Daniel stared.
“She was going to pay Vanessa again.”
Michael nodded.
“For what?”
Marcus answered.
“For getting Michael’s signature.”
Everyone turned.
Marcus looked miserable.
“I drove Patricia and Vanessa to a meeting two weeks ago. They argued in the car.”
“About what?”
“Vanessa said she wanted ten million, not six.”
Michael’s stomach turned.
“Six million for forged control documents?”
“I think so.”
“Why would Vanessa hide Lily?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I didn’t know about that.”
Michael believed him.
Andrew closed the ledger.
“This is substantial, but we still need financial records and corroboration.”
Daniel said, “I can get board files.”
“You’re interim CEO,” Michael said.
“For now.”
Michael looked at him.
“You’re helping me?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I’m helping Dad.”
The distinction mattered.
For the next two days, the alliance formed carefully.
Daniel remained publicly aligned with Patricia.
Claire analyzed transactions privately.
Andrew coordinated with investigators.
Elena stayed with Lily when Michael worked.
Rachel gave a sworn statement.
The microSD audio was forensically examined.
Preliminary results found no obvious signs of editing.
Then Vanessa requested to meet Michael during supervised visitation.
Andrew advised against private conversation.
Michael agreed to speak only with attorneys present.
Vanessa arrived looking thinner.
For twenty minutes she played with Lily under supervision.
Lily laughed once.
Michael’s heart twisted.
Vanessa cried silently.
After Lily was taken to another room, Vanessa faced Michael.
“You think I never loved her.”
“I think you put her in a refuse cart.”
“I knew she was safe.”
“You used her.”
“Yes.”
The admission shocked him.
Rebecca Sloan touched Vanessa’s arm.
Vanessa pulled away.
“No. I’m done lying.”
Rebecca stared.
Michael leaned forward.
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes met his.
“Because Patricia told me if I didn’t make you sign before the board meeting, she would expose me.”
“For what?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“For Saint Adrian.”
Michael felt the room tighten.
“You helped steal money.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I didn’t know everything at first.”
“That’s not an amount.”
“Three-point-two million came to Vela. Most went back out.”
“To whom?”
Vanessa looked at Rebecca.
Her attorney said, “You do not have to answer.”
Vanessa ignored her.
“Thomas Reed.”
Michael went still.
“General counsel?”
“He designed the entities.”
“How much did he get?”
“I don’t know.”
Michael asked the question that mattered most.
“What did Patricia threaten to expose?”
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“I forged your authorization years before we married.”
Michael stared.
“And she kept proof.”
“Yes.”
“So you married me because she ordered you to?”
Vanessa looked down.
“At first.”
Michael’s throat tightened.
“And later?”
She whispered, “Later was real.”
He almost hated her more for saying it.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Patricia has a vault.”
“Where?”
“In the old Sterling house.”
Daniel had inherited that property, but Patricia still used the library.
“What’s inside?”
“Original contracts. Payment records. Recordings. Everything she uses to control people.”
“Why tell me?”
Vanessa’s eyes lifted.
“Because she called me this morning.”
Michael waited.
“She said supervised custody is useless to her.”
His blood went cold.
“What does that mean?”
“She wants me to take Lily.”
Michael rose.
Vanessa flinched.
“What exactly did she say?”
Vanessa reached into her bag.
Rebecca objected.
“Vanessa.”
But Vanessa placed her phone on the table.
A message from Patricia.
