Chapter 17 - The Confession at Saint Adrian

Michael did not go.

But he stepped backward with Lily while officers negotiated.

Thomas Reed’s composure deteriorated by the second.

“You ruined everything,” he shouted at Patricia.

Patricia’s voice stayed steady.

“You did that yourself.”

“You designed Blackstone.”

“You structured it.”

“You ordered the payments.”

“You profited.”

Michael listened.

So did every police body camera.

Every tactical microphone.

Thomas laughed wildly.

“You think they won’t hear about Charles?”

Patricia went pale.

Michael froze.

“What about Dad?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Ask your mother why she didn’t give him the codicil back.”

Patricia said sharply, “Thomas.”

“What?”

“He was dying.”

Thomas smiled.

“And wanted you gone.”

Michael stepped closer despite officers signaling him back.

“What happened?”

Patricia stared at Thomas.

Thomas answered.

“Charles signed the codicil. Patricia found out. She took the original from his study.”

“You helped?”

“I made sure probate used the old will.”

Patricia whispered, “Stop.”

Thomas laughed.

“You wanted truth, Michael? Here.”

He looked toward Michael.

“Your father was going to expose everything. Blackstone, Saint Adrian, the director payments.”

Michael’s voice was barely audible.

“Why didn’t he?”

“Because he died.”

Michael felt the implication.

He looked at Patricia.

“Did you—”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

And for once, Michael believed it.

Thomas scoffed.

“She didn’t kill him. Cancer did. Don’t make this more dramatic than it was.”

Michael almost hated him for the relief.

No cheap final crime.

No secret murder.

Something more ordinary.

Cowardice.

Greed.

Forgery.

A dying man’s wishes erased after death.

Thomas tightened his grip on Patricia.

“I want a car.”

Negotiators kept him talking.

Patricia said, “There is no money anymore.”

Thomas stared.

“You’re lying.”

“The accounts are frozen.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“Federal warrants.”

“You said you could move it.”

“I lied.”

Michael almost laughed at the irony.

Patricia had finally weaponized deception against her partner.

Thomas became frantic.

His attention shifted toward the drive beneath the cabinet.

That second was enough.

A tactical officer fired a less-lethal round.

Thomas recoiled.

Another officer rushed him.

The gun struck the floor.

Patricia stumbled free.

Within seconds Thomas was restrained.

Lily cried against Michael’s chest.

The entire conspiracy seemed to collapse in one room.

But Patricia was not free.

An agent approached her.

“Patricia Sterling?”

She looked at Michael.

“Yes.”

“You’re under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant.”

Daniel arrived moments later with Andrew.

He stopped when he saw their mother being handcuffed.

Patricia’s face twisted.

“Daniel.”

He did not move.

She looked at Michael.

“Do something.”

There it was.

The old command.

Responsibility.

Fix this.

Protect the family.

Michael held Lily closer.

“No.”

Patricia stared.

“You would let them parade me out?”

“You brought yourself here.”

“I came for your daughter.”

Michael’s eyes burned.

“Yes.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

“That matters,” Michael said.

“But it does not erase everything else.”

Patricia’s face crumpled in a way he had never seen.

Not strategic.

Not controlled.

Human.

“I am your mother.”

“I know.”

That was why it hurt.

She was led away.

Thomas was taken separately.

Outside Saint Adrian, Elena waited behind the police perimeter.

Michael carried Lily toward her.

Elena began crying when she saw the baby.

Michael handed Lily over long enough to let Elena check her face, fingers, and breathing.

“She’s okay,” Elena whispered.

Michael nodded.

“Again.”

The word hurt.

Again.

Lily had survived adults using her twice.

That could never happen a third time.

Vanessa arrived with Rebecca.

Police allowed her near after confirming the scene was secure.

She saw Lily.

Her legs almost gave way.

“Can I hold her?”

Michael hesitated.

Every part of him wanted to say no forever.

But the guardian ad litem had already told him something difficult:

Lily was not a weapon.

Not his.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not Patricia’s.

If supervised contact was safe, Michael could not use Lily to punish Vanessa for his pain.

He looked at the officer.

Then at Rebecca.

Then handed Lily to Vanessa under supervision.

Vanessa held her daughter and sobbed.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily touched Vanessa’s chin.

Michael looked away.

Elena stood beside him.

“You did the right thing.”

“I don’t know.”

“You didn’t have to know.”

Police lights reflected off Saint Adrian’s broken windows.

The building where Luis had been destroyed had become the place where the truth finally surfaced.

Then an agent approached Andrew.

“We recovered Reed’s phone.”

Andrew nodded.

“Anything useful?”

The agent glanced at Michael.

“A lot.”

One message was from Victor Halberg.

Sent only six hours earlier.
