Chapter 1 - Eat Down There

Bianca Mercer lifted Naomi’s dinner plate from the polished teak table as though she were clearing away something unpleasant.

Naomi stared at her stepmother.

“What are you doing?”

Bianca did not answer.

She walked across the dining salon of the Asteria, Gabriel Mercer’s one-hundred-and-forty-foot luxury yacht, while rain hammered the dark windows and lightning flashed over the Atlantic beyond Fort Lauderdale.

Then she tipped the plate.

Grilled sea bass, potatoes, vegetables, everything Naomi had barely touched fell onto the floor beside Atlas.

The old golden retriever flinched.

Bianca pointed downward.

“If you’re hungry, eat down there.”

Nobody moved.

Captain Lucas Reed was not in the salon, but three crew members were.

Marta, the chief steward.

Ben, the deckhand.

And Calvin Price, Gabriel’s longtime engineer.

All three looked away.

Naomi felt heat rush into her face.

She was twenty-six years old.

She had sat in boardrooms with lawyers twice her age.

She had delivered a eulogy at her father’s funeral six weeks earlier without breaking down.

Yet in that moment she felt twelve.

Unwanted.

Small.

Bianca leaned closer.

“Your father is dead. You’re a guest on his yacht now.”

Naomi’s eyes burned.

Around them, crystal glasses trembled faintly as the storm shifted the yacht against its mooring lines.

Naomi forced herself to stand.

“He left this yacht to his family.”

Bianca smiled.

“Yes.”

Then her eyes became colder.

“And you’d be surprised who he considered family.”

Naomi walked away before Bianca could see how deeply the words landed.

Atlas immediately abandoned the food.

His nails clicked behind Naomi through the corridor.

She entered the owner’s passage and crouched beside him.

“At least you didn’t forget me.”

Atlas pressed his head into her hand.

Her father had loved that dog almost irrationally.

Gabriel Mercer took Atlas to board meetings at the marina office, on coastal runs, even to negotiations where other executives pretended not to be annoyed by dog hair on their suits.

Naomi scratched beneath Atlas’s worn blue collar.

Something hard touched her finger.

She frowned.

Behind his brass identification tag was a tiny cylindrical capsule.

Naomi unscrewed it.

Inside was a key.

Small.

Brass.

Old-fashioned.

She stared.

A chair scraped violently behind her.

“Naomi.”

Bianca stood in the dining-salon doorway.

And for the first time that night she did not look smug.

She looked terrified.

“Give me that.”

Naomi closed her fist.

“You knew Dad hid this.”

Bianca stepped closer.

“Some things were buried for a reason.”

Naomi’s tears disappeared.

“Then let’s dig.”

She headed straight for Gabriel’s private cabin.

Bianca followed.

“Naomi, stop.”

Naomi ignored her.

The owner’s suite had remained mostly unchanged since Gabriel died.

His books still lined the shelf.

His dark navy sweater hung behind the cabin door.

And in the corner stood a walnut cabinet Naomi had seen her entire childhood but never once opened.

Near the bottom was a tiny brass lock.

Her hand trembled.

She inserted the key.

Click.

The cabinet opened.

Inside sat an old satellite phone.

A sealed legal envelope.

And a photograph.

Naomi at sixteen beside Gabriel on the marina dock, both holding Atlas’s leash.

Bianca entered behind her.

“Close that cabinet.”

Naomi turned.

“Now you’re afraid of a dead man too?”

She picked up the satellite phone.

The battery indicator lit.

A saved audio file appeared.

GABRIEL — FINAL.

Naomi pressed play.

Her father’s voice filled the cabin.

“Naomi, if you found Atlas’s key, Bianca has probably already tried to remove you from the yacht.”

Naomi stopped breathing.

Bianca’s face collapsed.

The recording continued.

“Do not sign anything she puts in front of you.”

Naomi slowly turned toward her stepmother.

Then she tore open the legal envelope.

Inside was an amendment to Gabriel’s will.

Her name appeared repeatedly.

Naomi Mercer.

Controlling beneficial interest in the Asteria.

Fifty-one percent of Mercer Maritime Holdings through the Mercer Family Trust.

Bianca’s authority was listed as temporary and administrative only.

Another document followed.

TRANSFER AND RELEASE OF BENEFICIAL INTEREST.

Prepared.

Unsigned.

Naomi looked up.

“You were trying to make me surrender Dad’s shares.”

Bianca’s voice sharpened.

“You have no idea what your father was protecting.”

The cabin door opened.

Captain Lucas Reed stepped inside.

He saw the papers.

Then the phone.

His weathered face went still.

“Where did you find that?”

Naomi pointed at the cabinet.

Lucas looked at Bianca.

“He told me this day might come.”

Naomi’s heart began pounding.

“Who else knew?”

Lucas hesitated.

Bianca snapped, “Don’t answer her.”

That was when Naomi understood.

This was bigger than one cruel woman trying to humiliate her stepdaughter.

The recording continued.

“Bianca cannot transfer the trust alone.”

Bianca lunged toward the satellite phone.

Naomi pulled it away.

“She needs one other signature.”

Naomi stared at her.

“Whose?”

A secured door farther down the owner’s corridor unlocked.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps approached.

Naomi looked at Bianca.

“Who’s coming?”

Bianca’s face lost all color.

“The person your father trusted more than you ever knew.”

The handle began turning.

Gabriel’s voice delivered one final warning from the phone.

“Naomi, if they arrive before you finish this message, do not tell them what Atlas gave you.”

Naomi tightened her fist around the brass key.

The door opened.

Adrian Mercer stepped inside.

Gabriel’s younger brother.

May you like

Naomi’s estranged uncle.

And the man whose signature appeared beneath Bianca’s on the unfinished transfer papers.
