Chapter 13 - The Yacht Was Evidence

The Asteria had cost Gabriel $21 million.
Naomi assumed he bought it with legitimate distributions.
He had.
Mostly.
Forensic accountants found that a $4.2 million refit three years earlier had been paid through Mercer Maritime vendors.
Invoices were inflated.
The yacht itself had benefited from the fraud network.
Damian’s message was designed to contaminate Naomi’s victory.
It worked.
Naomi stood in the salon where Bianca had dumped her dinner.
“Is this yacht stolen?”
Maya shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
“That sounds comforting.”
“The underlying yacht purchase appears legitimate. Some refit expenses were improperly charged to the company.”
“How much?”
“Potentially one point eight million attributable to sham or inflated vendor work.”
Naomi felt sick.
Gabriel might have known.
The logbook contained an entry:
Asteria refit irregularities. D says coding error. Review later.
Later.
Again.
Naomi looked at the polished wood.
The yacht was not only home.
It was evidence of Gabriel’s willingness to look away when the luxury benefited him.
That hurt more than Bianca’s insults.
Naomi had idealized her father as the victim of everyone else’s greed.
He had flaws too.
Not theft, perhaps.
But convenience.
She called Lucas.
“Did Dad know company money paid for the refit?”
“Not initially.”
“Later?”
Lucas hesitated.
“Yes.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
“What did he do?”
“He ordered Damian to reclassify expenses.”
“Did he check whether it happened?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he pay the company back?”
“I don’t know.”
That was enough.
Naomi instructed Maya to calculate every improper dollar tied to the yacht.
If Gabriel’s estate owed Mercer Maritime reimbursement, the estate would pay.
Bianca called the decision ridiculous.
“You’re taking money from your own inheritance to reimburse a company you control.”
“Yes.”
“So moving money from one pocket to another.”
“No.”
Naomi looked at her.
“Those are separate legal entities. That thinking is how this started.”
Bianca went quiet.
Naomi was learning.
The estate placed $2.1 million into escrow pending final accounting.
Her personal inheritance shrank again.
She felt lighter.
Then came the more serious blow.
Federal investigators had recovered Damian’s private ledger.
It showed payments not only to Bianca, Richard and Preston.
One coded recipient was G.M.
Gabriel Mercer.
Naomi stared.
“No.”
Payments totaling $950,000.
Maya warned:
“Do not jump to conclusions.”
Naomi’s hands shook.
“Dad took money?”
The ledger described them as “G.M. settlement.”
Adrian did not know.
Lucas did not know.
Bianca looked genuinely shocked.
For two days Naomi could barely sleep.
Then forensic accountants traced the transfers.
They went to a Mercer Maritime account controlled by Gabriel.
Not personal.
A litigation reserve.
Gabriel had secretly recovered part of the stolen money from Damian and held it while building evidence.
But he never documented it properly.
Another terrible choice motivated by secrecy.
The money was still there.
$950,000.
Naomi exhaled.
Then Maya said, “There’s more.”
Gabriel had recorded Damian making one of the payments.
The audio was on the satellite phone’s locked third file.
Password recovered from Gabriel’s notes:
ATLAS2012.
Naomi played it.
Damian’s voice:
“You take this and leave Bellrose alone.”
Gabriel:
“No.”
Damian:
“Then why open the account?”
Gabriel:
“To see whether you’d pay.”
Damian swore.
Gabriel continued.
“You just did.”
Naomi almost smiled.
Her father had staged a trap.
Then another voice entered the recording.
Richard Vale.
“You’re making a mistake, Gabriel.”
Naomi leaned closer.
Richard continued.
“Companies like yours don’t survive public morality.”
Gabriel replied:
“Maybe mine won’t.”
A pause.
“But you won’t own it when it dies.”
The recording ended.
There it was.
Gabriel had eventually chosen exposure.
He simply died before completing it.
Naomi cried.
Not because he was innocent.
He was not.
He delayed too long.
Ignored irregularities.
Protected appearances.
But at the end he had changed direction.
That mattered.
Then the final part of the recording played.
Gabriel speaking alone.
“Naomi, if you ever hear this, do not make me better than I was.”
She stopped breathing.
“I loved you. I also excluded you. I told myself secrecy kept you safe because I did not want to admit how much control comforted me.”
Naomi covered her mouth.
“Do better.”
The message ended.
No grand declaration.
No claim that everything he did was for family.
Just an instruction.
Do better.
Naomi sat in silence.
Then Atlas placed his head in her lap.
She laughed through tears.
“Your owner was exhausting.”
Atlas sighed.
The yacht investigation eventually determined the estate owed Mercer Maritime $1.74 million.
Naomi authorized repayment.
Bianca watched.
“You’re dismantling everything Gabriel built.”
Naomi answered:
“No.”
She looked around the salon.
“I’m separating what he built from what he pretended.”
Then Marta approached.
“There’s someone at the gangway.”
“Who?”
“A woman named Evelyn Hart.”
Naomi frowned.
She did not know the name.
Marta continued.
May you like
“She says she was the woman in Lisbon.”
The woman Damian used to convince Bianca that Gabriel was having an affair.
