Chapter 13 - The House Divides

The divorce turned the mansion into evidence.

Photographs of rooms.

Inventories.

Property schedules.

Insurance records.

Household payroll.

Nathan hated it.

Claire had designed the nursery windows herself.

Now lawyers debated whether certain furniture was separate property.

Vanessa demanded access to retrieve personal belongings.

The court granted a supervised four-hour window.

Nathan took Lily to Caroline’s house.

He refused to be present.

Then Rosa called.

“Mr. Hale.”

Her voice was tight.

“What happened?”

“Mrs. Hale is in Claire’s study.”

“She’s allowed to collect belongings.”

“She is opening the wall panel.”

Nathan stood.

“What wall panel?”

Rosa lowered her voice.

“The one behind the bookshelves.”

Nathan drove home.

The supervising officer met him outside.

Vanessa had claimed personal documents were stored there.

Nathan entered the study.

Vanessa stood near an open hidden cabinet.

He had never known it existed.

Inside were old architectural plans and correspondence.

Vanessa smiled.

“You really never knew your wife.”

Nathan ignored the insult.

“What are you looking for?”

“My property.”

“Claire’s study wasn’t your property.”

“I lived here.”

“For five months.”

“That was enough.”

Rosa stood by the door.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Still here?”

Rosa’s face remained calm.

“Yes.”

“You’ll leave eventually.”

Nathan stepped between them.

“Don’t speak to her.”

The supervising officer watched carefully.

Vanessa smiled.

“Still protecting the servant.”

Nathan did not react.

“That used to work on me.”

“What?”

“Trying to make me ashamed of respecting someone because she works for me.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You think Rosa loves you?”

“I don’t need her to.”

Vanessa looked almost amused.

“You still don’t understand class.”

“No. I understand loyalty better now.”

That landed.

Vanessa collected two boxes.

Before leaving, she turned.

“Did you find Claire’s green box?”

Nathan’s blood cooled.

He kept his face still.

“What box?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Good.”

Then she left.

Rosa stared after her.

“She knows.”

“She knows we might have found it.”

Nathan called Evelyn.

The evidence from the green box had already been copied and secured.

Nothing Vanessa could do would erase it.

But her interest suggested something remained undiscovered.

Nathan reread Claire’s journals.

One passage stood out:

If V finds the property map, she’ll understand why Lily’s trust matters beyond Hale shares.

Property map.

Nathan searched the green box again.

No map.

Then Caroline remembered Claire storing rolled architectural drawings at Hale Development’s archive.

They found them.

One map highlighted several parcels around Stamford.

Most belonged to Hale Development.

One small parcel belonged to the Lily Claire Hale Trust.

Nathan frowned.

“I didn’t know Lily owned land.”

Evelyn searched the trust schedule.

Claire had purchased it personally three years earlier.

Four acres.

Industrial zoning.

Currently worth perhaps $2 million.

But its location mattered.

It sat between Hale’s waterfront project and the only practical road access for Vanessa’s VHC parcel.

Without Lily’s land, Vanessa’s parcel had limited commercial use.

Nathan stared.

“That’s why Lily mattered.”

Evelyn nodded.

“To maximize VHC’s value, Vanessa needed an easement across Lily’s trust property.”

“And Rosa could block it.”

“Yes.”

Nathan finally saw the complete structure.

The toddler’s trust did not merely hold company shares.

Lily owned the key parcel connecting Vanessa’s secret land investment to the redevelopment.

If Vanessa controlled Nathan—

and removed Rosa—

she could approve the easement.

VHC’s value would explode.

Potential profit: tens of millions.

The milk incident had become part of a scheme surrounding four acres owned by a one-year-old child.

Nathan felt sick.

Then Caroline found another note on the map.

Claire’s handwriting:

Do not sell until Harbor easement investigation complete.

Harbor.

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

“Harold?”

“Maybe.”

They searched property records.

The access corridor Vanessa wanted would also benefit Northstar.

Which Harold partially owned.

Everyone’s money converged on Lily’s four acres.

Nathan whispered, “She wasn’t just leverage.”

“What?”

“Lily was the gate.”

Then Nathan’s phone rang.

It was the child protective caseworker.

Vanessa had filed a motion asking for supervised visitation.

Nathan’s face hardened.

“She abused Lily.”

“The court will decide.”

“Why would she even want visitation?”

The answer came to him before Evelyn said it.

Because portraying herself as a loving stepmother strengthened her divorce narrative.

And because as long as Vanessa could claim a relationship with Lily, she had a reason to stay near the trust.

Nathan looked at the property map.

This fight was no longer simply about proving what Vanessa did.

May you like

It was about making sure she could never use Lily again.
