Chapter 4 - Claire’s Locked Instruction

Claire had not trusted anyone completely.
Not Nathan.
Not Caroline.
Not their board.
And, apparently, not Vanessa.
Evelyn explained in her office after the board meeting.
Claire owned twenty-eight percent of Hale Development.
Nathan owned thirty-four.
Caroline owned eleven.
Other family trusts and outside directors held the rest.
Before Claire’s death, she transferred twenty percent of her holdings into a trust primarily for Lily.
Nathan knew that.
What he did not remember was an additional clause.
If Nathan remarried before Lily turned five, any major transaction affecting Hale Development’s controlling family shares required approval from an independent trust protector.
“Who?” Nathan asked.
Evelyn slid a page across the desk.
Rosa Alvarez.
Nathan stared.
“The maid?”
Evelyn’s eyebrows rose.
Nathan immediately regretted the phrasing.
“Sorry.”
“Claire chose Rosa because Rosa had no financial interest in the company.”
Caroline laughed softly from across the room.
“That sounds exactly like Claire.”
Nathan read the clause again.
“Why didn’t you remind me before I married Vanessa?”
“I did.”
“When?”
“Two weeks before your wedding.”
Nathan remembered opening an email from Evelyn.
Seeing eighteen pages of trust analysis.
Forwarding it to Vanessa.
“Handle this.”
His stomach dropped.
“I sent it to her.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I know.”
Caroline swore.
Nathan looked at the ceiling.
“Vanessa knew.”
“She knew Rosa had veto power over certain transactions involving Lily’s trust block.”
“And Rosa didn’t?”
“She was notified after Claire died.”
Nathan frowned.
“Rosa never told me.”
“Claire asked her not to exercise the power casually.”
Nathan stood.
“Then yesterday Vanessa tried to frame the one person who can stop her from controlling Claire’s shares.”
Silence.
Caroline whispered, “That wasn’t random.”
Nathan thought of Vanessa pointing at Rosa.
She dropped the baby.
A lie delivered without hesitation.
Maybe Vanessa had wanted Rosa fired.
Discredited.
Charged.
Removed from Lily’s life.
Evelyn asked, “Where is Rosa now?”
“At the house.”
“Do not leave her alone.”
Nathan called.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
He was already moving.
Caroline followed.
They reached the Hale estate fifteen minutes later.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Rosa!”
Nathan ran upstairs.
The nursery was empty.
Lily was with Caroline’s nanny at Caroline’s home for the day.
Nathan checked the kitchen.
Laundry room.
Guest wing.
Then he heard a thud from the pantry.
He opened the door.
Rosa sat on the floor.
Her hands trembled.
Beside her lay a shattered coffee mug.
“What happened?”
“I got dizzy.”
Nathan crouched.
“Did you fall?”
“I think so.”
Caroline picked up the mug.
“What were you drinking?”
“Tea.”
“Who made it?”
Rosa hesitated.
“Mrs. Hale.”
Nathan went still.
Rosa looked frightened.
“She said she wanted to apologize.”
Caroline whispered, “Don’t move.”
She called emergency services.
At the hospital, preliminary testing found a sedative in Rosa’s blood.
Not enough to kill her.
Enough to make her confused.
Enough to make her fall.
Enough, perhaps, to create another story about an unreliable household employee.
Nathan sat beside Rosa’s hospital bed.
“I should have listened to you.”
Rosa looked exhausted.
“Yes.”
The bluntness surprised him.
Then she smiled weakly.
“But listening now is better than never.”
Evelyn arrived with Detective Miriam Cole from Greenwich Police.
Detective Cole was forty-six, methodical, and unimpressed by Hale family wealth.
“We’ll need the tea cup, security footage, medication access, and everyone’s statements.”
Nathan nodded.
“The hallway camera.”
Detective Cole looked at him.
“What about it?”
“Yesterday’s footage.”
“We have a copy.”
“No. I mean the system itself.”
Nathan called his security manager.
Five minutes later, the man called back.
His voice was strained.
“Mr. Hale, we have a problem.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“What?”
“The nursery footage is gone.”
“What do you mean gone?”
“Deleted.”
“By whom?”
“We’re checking.”
Nathan’s heart pounded.
“Can you recover it?”
“Maybe.”
Detective Cole held out her hand for the phone.
Before Nathan passed it over, another message appeared.
From Vanessa.
A photograph of Lily asleep at Caroline’s house.
Nathan’s blood froze.
Under the photograph were two sentences.
You keep acting like cameras protect you.
May you like
They only matter if someone controls the recordings.
