Chapter 12 - The Silver Drive

Julian’s silver flash drive was hidden inside an old marine navigation manual in his brother’s garage.
It contained everything.
Invoices.
Bank-routing spreadsheets.
Internal emails.
Mason’s instructions to split payments below board-review thresholds.
And recordings.
The most important recording had been made eighteen months earlier.
Claire’s voice spoke first.
“If Adrian discovers the transfers, he’ll call the police.”
Mason laughed.
“Only after he fires half the company.”
“We need him compromised before that.”
“How?”
“You don’t need to create someone’s weakness if they already have one.”
Adrian stopped the audio.
He could not listen.
Naomi said quietly, “We need the rest.”
He started it again.
Mason: “The housekeeper?”
Claire: “Rosa sees too much.”
Mason: “Then get rid of her.”
Claire: “Firing her makes her angry. Discrediting her makes her useless.”
Mason: “And Adrian?”
Claire: “If he thinks someone touched Noah, he’ll lose his mind.”
The recording ended there.
Rosa left the room.
Adrian followed.
She stood beside Naomi’s office window, crying silently.
“I should have seen her changing.”
“You were raising my child while I was working.”
“I thought she was unhappy.”
“She was.”
Rosa turned.
“That doesn’t explain this.”
“No.”
Adrian looked back through the glass wall at the laptop.
“But some of what she wrote about me was true.”
Rosa’s expression softened.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I need to.”
“Why?”
“So I don’t turn her crimes into permission to forget my own failures.”
Rosa wiped her eyes.
“That is the first useful thing anger has taught you.”
The silver drive gave prosecutors probable cause for broader financial warrants.
Federal investigators became involved because interstate wires and banking transactions were implicated.
Mason’s attorney immediately sought immunity discussions.
Claire’s lawyer blamed Mason.
The alliance began cracking.
Claire claimed Mason had manipulated her during an emotionally vulnerable period.
Mason claimed Claire designed the frame against Rosa.
Each accused the other.
Detective Holt watched with satisfaction.
“They’re doing our work.”
But Naomi warned Adrian.
“Do not assume Claire is finished.”
She wasn’t.
Two days later, Claire petitioned family court to exclude the marina footage.
Her expert argued that because Adrian had administrative access to the camera system, the video might have been altered.
The claim was weak.
But it delayed proceedings.
Then Claire produced another recording.
This one showed Adrian, eight months before Noah’s birth, shouting during an argument in the villa.
“You don’t get to threaten me with leaving every time I disagree with you!”
Claire’s voice responded, “Get away from me.”
A door slammed.
No hitting.
No physical contact.
But Adrian sounded frightening.
The recording spread online.
At the next custody hearing, Judge Mercer addressed him directly.
“Mr. Vale, I have reviewed your counseling attendance.”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“You have completed six sessions voluntarily.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian glanced toward Claire.
Then back at the judge.
“Because I don’t want my son growing up learning that fear is authority.”
The courtroom became still.
Claire stared at him.
The judge said, “That answer matters more if you live it.”
The revised child-safety report recommended temporary shared legal custody but physical placement with a licensed relative caregiver while criminal evidence was evaluated.
Adrian’s supervised visits increased.
Claire’s became supervised too.
It was the first time the legal system formally treated her conduct as an equal danger.
After the hearing, Elise pulled Claire into a side room.
Through the open door Adrian heard Claire say:
“You told me the footage could disappear.”
Adrian stopped.
Elise immediately shut the door.
But Rosa, behind him, had heard it too.
“That wasn’t about her expert,” Rosa whispered.
“No.”
Adrian looked toward the closed door.
“She was talking about Mason.”
That night Mason sent Adrian an encrypted email.
One sentence:
Claire is going to say the marina was my idea.
Adrian forwarded it to investigators without answering.
Another arrived.
You want the truth? Meet me.
Adrian still did not reply.
A third message appeared.
She never meant to leave Noah there.
He stared at the words.
May you like
Then the final line came.
Because Rosa was supposed to find him first.
