Chapter 13 - What Rosa Was Supposed to See

Mason surrendered for questioning through counsel.
He did not confess.
Not fully.
But he gave investigators a version designed to reduce his own exposure.
According to Mason, Claire’s original plan had been simple.
She would hide Noah in the waste cart.
Then she would call Rosa into the service bay.
Rosa would discover the baby alone.
Claire would arrive moments later, screaming.
Adrian would be summoned.
In the confusion, Claire would claim Rosa had taken Noah without permission.
The old security manual led Claire to believe she could delete the footage afterward.
Mason said he had warned her the plan was dangerous.
The recovered recording suggested otherwise.
“Why didn’t it happen that way?” Holt asked.
“Adrian came back early.”
Rain had canceled his dinner boat transfer.
He reached the villa twenty minutes before Claire expected him.
That changed everything.
Claire heard Adrian calling.
She improvised.
Instead of Rosa discovering Noah, Claire began pretending he was missing.
Then Rosa entered.
Claire blamed her instantly.
Adrian heard Noah before Claire could stage the discovery.
“And the violence?” Holt asked.
Mason looked at his attorney.
“I knew Adrian had a temper.”
“Did you expect him to strike Claire?”
“No.”
“Did Claire?”
Mason hesitated.
“She wanted him angry.”
That was enough.
Not enough for every charge.
Enough for motive.
Then Holt asked about the leaked seven-second video.
Mason admitted he had received it from Claire.
He sent it anonymously to reporters.
“Why?”
“To pressure the board.”
“Why?”
“So Adrian would be suspended.”
“And while he was suspended?”
Mason looked exhausted.
“We were supposed to finish a financing transaction.”
Samuel Pike later explained the final piece.
Vale Marine had been negotiating a $60 million credit facility for expansion.
As acting CEO, Mason could not sell Adrian’s shares.
But he could approve certain project drawdowns and vendor commitments.
Another three to five million dollars could have been extracted before the annual audit.
Claire’s scheme was not about taking Vale Marine.
It was about draining one final pool of money before leaving.
The company was the bank.
Adrian was the obstacle.
Rosa was the witness.
Noah was the trigger.
Adrian sat alone after hearing the summary.
Of all the truths, that one hurt most.
Noah was not the beneficiary of Claire’s plan.
He was a tool inside it.
Then everything shifted again.
The state prosecutor formally charged Adrian with misdemeanor domestic assault.
Michael Trent delivered the news.
“No dismissal?”
“No.”
“Even with the full footage?”
“Especially with it. The prosecutor believes the context explains your state of mind but does not erase the strikes.”
Adrian nodded.
“What do you recommend?”
“If offered a plea that avoids incarceration, requires counseling and probation, and protects your ability to continue custody litigation, we consider it seriously.”
Adrian looked through the office window.
He had imagined vindication as a door that would eventually open.
Instead, justice was dividing everyone’s conduct into separate boxes.
Claire could be guilty.
Mason could be guilty.
Adrian could still be guilty too.
He finally understood why that mattered.
That evening the board reinstated Adrian as CEO by a narrow vote.
He declined.
Again.
Paula Finch confronted him privately.
“This company bears your name.”
“That doesn’t mean I have to sit in the chair every day.”
“You built it.”
“I also ignored controls because I thought trust was efficient.”
“Mason deceived you.”
“I made deception easy.”
Paula studied him.
“What do you want?”
“To remain chairman until the investigation concludes. You run operations.”
“And after?”
“I don’t know.”
It was the first time in years Adrian had admitted not knowing without feeling weak.
Then Rosa called.
Her voice shook.
“Someone came to my house.”
Adrian stood.
“Who?”
“Claire.”
“She can’t contact you about the case.”
“She didn’t come inside.”
“What did she want?”
Rosa swallowed.
“She left Noah’s gray blanket on my porch.”
Adrian felt cold.
“Anything with it?”
“A note.”
“What does it say?”
May you like
Rosa read it aloud.
You wanted to be his witness. Now decide whether you want to be the reason he loses his mother.
