Chapter 10 - Damian Loses Noah

Family court lasted thirty-seven minutes.

It felt longer than the harbor.

Mara’s attorney did not accuse Damian of abuse.

That would have been easier to fight.

She presented facts.

Noah had been in Damian’s care.

Noah had been lured from a controlled facility.

The threat appeared connected to Damian’s company and family.

The court ordered temporary primary physical custody to Mara until the criminal investigation clarified the risk.

Damian received scheduled parenting time away from Vale Maritime property.

When the judge finished, Damian did not speak.

Outside, Mara approached him.

“I’m not taking him from you.”

“It feels like it.”

“I’m keeping him away from the harbor.”

“I am not the harbor.”

Mara looked at him sadly.

“You don’t know where one ends and the other begins.”

Damian flinched.

That evening he packed Noah’s overnight bag.

Seven-year-old T-shirts.

A dinosaur book.

Blue socks.

The same blue puffer jacket had been taken into evidence.

Noah stood in the doorway.

“Am I in trouble?”

Damian turned immediately.

“No.”

“Mom says I’m staying with her more.”

“For a while.”

“Because I went to the water?”

“No.”

Noah looked down.

“I thought you sent the message.”

Damian knelt.

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

Damian’s face broke.

“You never apologize for trusting me.”

Noah hugged him.

Damian closed his eyes.

For years, he had believed his greatest responsibility was building something Noah could inherit.

Now he wondered if the company had become the thing his son needed protection from.

The next morning the board suspended Damian from executive duties pending the trust committee vote.

Julian became acting chief executive.

Julian stood before employees.

“This is temporary. My brother has my full support.”

Damian watched the livestream from his apartment.

Anna arrived without knocking.

He looked at her.

“I thought we were done.”

“So did I.”

She placed a file on the table.

“Julian announced a strategic review.”

“So?”

“He’s already circulating an offer.”

Damian opened it.

Northshore Infrastructure Partners proposed buying Blackridge Terminal Two.

Price: $620 million.

Damian stood.

“That terminal is worth at least nine hundred.”

“Why sell it cheap?”

“Liquidity.”

“For what?”

Anna showed him the forensic accountant’s notes.

Julian’s private HarborStone investments carried enormous debt.

A side agreement indicated HarborStone would receive a twenty-million-dollar “consulting termination payment” if Northshore acquired the terminal.

Damian stared.

“He gets control and immediately sells company assets to rescue himself.”

Anna nodded.

“Caleb found the setup.”

Damian looked at her.

“And died.”

They sat in silence.

Then Anna said, “I was wrong.”

“About what?”

“When you turned my files over to police.”

Damian waited.

“I thought you were choosing your company.”

“I was choosing evidence.”

“I know.”

He nodded once.

Not forgiveness.

Just acknowledgment.

His phone rang.

Margaret.

The trust committee had moved the vote forward.

Tomorrow.

Julian needed only one more committee member to suspend Damian as executive trustee.

If that happened, he would control the voting shares and likely force the Northshore transaction through the board.

Damian looked at Anna.

“We have twenty-four hours.”

She opened Caleb’s notes.

“Then stop looking for what Julian stole.”

Damian frowned.

“What should we look for?”

“What he was afraid Caleb could prove.”

They returned to the security logs.

One pattern stood out.

Every suspicious Thursday camera blackout had been approved through Mason Rourke’s master console.

Every one.

Damian called Mason.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Lena Brooks called five minutes later.

“Don’t go looking for him.”

“Why?”

“Mason’s gone.”

“Gone where?”

“His apartment is empty.”

Damian’s chest tightened.

“Car?”

“Found at Logan Airport.”

“He fled?”

“Maybe.”

Then Lena added:

“We found a note.”

“What does it say?”

A pause.

“Julian promised me he would never use the child.”

May you like

Damian closed his eyes.

The conspiracy had just acquired its first crack.
