Chapter 9 - The Second Son

Arthur Vale had never hit either of his sons.

He did something quieter.

He compared them.

Damian was brave.

Julian was careful.

Damian inspired people.

Julian managed them.

Damian would carry the name.

Julian would protect it.

At Arthur’s funeral, Julian stood beside his brother while everyone told Damian how proud their father had been of him.

Nobody asked what Arthur had thought of Julian.

Years later, Julian still remembered.

Anna learned this from Margaret Vale.

The old woman invited Anna to tea without Damian knowing.

“I want to understand why my nephew might do something monstrous,” Margaret said.

Anna frowned.

“You believe he did?”

“I believe people rarely wake up evil.”

Anna thought of Caleb.

“So what happened?”

Margaret looked toward the harbor.

“Julian became convinced Damian had inherited what Julian earned.”

“Was he right?”

“Partly.”

Anna was surprised.

Margaret continued.

“Damian is visionary. He is also careless with details. Julian kept the company stable during expansions that might otherwise have failed.”

“And Arthur still chose Damian.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because their father believed leadership belonged to the eldest son.”

Anna’s mouth tightened.

“That’s terrible governance.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“You’re not wrong.”

She showed Anna an old trust memorandum.

If Damian was removed as executive trustee, Julian automatically became successor.

With the trust shares plus his personal holdings, Julian would control fifty-two percent of the voting power.

Enough.

Anna stared.

“Then this is bigger than embezzlement.”

Margaret nodded.

“Julian may have been stealing money while also preparing for the day he could take control legally.”

That evening Damian found the witness Caleb had listed only as T.R.

Tom Reyes.

Former night crane operator.

Tom had quit Vale Maritime two weeks after Caleb’s death.

At first he refused to talk.

Then Damian said, “Caleb’s daughter deserves the truth.”

Tom looked away.

“So does your son.”

Damian went still.

Tom knew.

They sat in a nearly empty bar.

Anna joined them after Margaret called her.

Damian and Anna barely looked at each other.

Tom rubbed both hands together.

“Caleb was asking questions about the Thursday moves.”

“What moves?” Anna asked.

“Containers coming in under temporary IDs.”

“What was inside?”

“Didn’t matter. Some were empty.”

Damian frowned.

“Then why move them?”

“To justify service charges. Security teams. crane crews. storage. inspections.”

Fake work generating real invoices.

Tom continued.

“Caleb figured out the cameras were being turned manually.”

“By Mason?” Damian asked.

Tom nodded.

“He confronted him.”

“And Julian?”

Tom drank.

“The night Caleb died, Julian came down.”

Anna’s face tightened.

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell investigators?”

Tom laughed sadly.

“Mason told me if I spread rumors, I’d be fired and sued.”

“You quit anyway.”

“After they made me sign a confidentiality agreement.”

Damian leaned forward.

“What happened to Caleb?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

Tom looked ashamed.

“I heard shouting near the electrical maintenance platform.”

“Who?”

“Caleb. Mason. Then Julian.”

Anna’s throat tightened.

“Then?”

“A crash.”

Tom looked at her.

“I went over ten minutes later. Caleb was already down.”

“Alive?”

“No.”

Anna closed her eyes.

Damian asked, “What did Julian say?”

Tom’s voice dropped.

“He said Caleb bypassed a barrier and fell.”

“That was the official report.”

“Because that was the story before investigators even arrived.”

Anna stared.

They had not discovered the cause.

They had chosen it.

Tom reached into his jacket.

He produced an old folded shift sheet.

“I kept this.”

It showed Mason had signed Caleb’s access badge out of personal effects before the evidence locker received the remaining items.

The badge had been missing before Julian ever entered the locker.

Mason had lied.

Damian felt anger turn almost calm.

Mason had controlled the cameras.

Mason had handled Caleb’s badge.

Mason had helped write the accident report.

But the money led to Julian.

Anna looked at Damian.

“Your brother had motive.”

Damian nodded.

“Mason had the tools.”

“And Noah?”

Tom spoke before either could answer.

“There’s something you should know.”

He looked at Damian.

“Three weeks ago Julian asked me whether Anna still lived in Boston.”

Anna went cold.

“Why?”

Tom swallowed.

“He said he needed to know if Caleb’s sister was still causing trouble.”

May you like

Someone had been checking Anna’s location before Noah fell.

The frame had been planned weeks in advance.
