Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Offered to Help

Julian Vale arrived at the emergency board meeting carrying coffee for everyone.

That was Julian.

Thoughtful.

Prepared.

Always calm when Damian was angry.

At forty-one, he was six years younger than Damian and had spent most of his adult life managing the operational machinery behind Vale Maritime.

Their father had called Julian dependable.

He had called Damian a leader.

Julian remembered the difference.

Damian sat across from him at the long walnut table.

Mara attended by video as Noah’s mother.

Detective Brooks sat near company counsel.

Anna had not been invited.

Julian began gently.

“This is horrifying.”

Damian watched him.

“My nephew nearly died at one of our facilities. Nothing matters more than finding out who did this.”

“Agreed.”

Julian leaned forward.

“I also think you should step away from harbor operations temporarily.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?”

“Not from the company. From security oversight.”

“Mason reports to you.”

“He reports operationally through my division. Ultimately he reports to you.”

Damian heard the precision.

Julian continued.

“There are reporters outside. Insurance carriers are asking questions. The Port Authority wants an explanation.”

“You sound prepared.”

“I spent all night being prepared.”

A board member cleared her throat.

“The issue is perception, Damian.”

Damian laughed once.

“My son was pushed into freezing water and we’re discussing perception.”

“We’re discussing governance.”

There it was.

Julian softened his expression.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

Damian remembered Anna’s warning.

Don’t call your brother.

He said nothing about Caleb’s voicemail.

Nothing about Shoreline Risk.

Not yet.

Instead he asked, “Who approved the internal investigation of Caleb Cole’s death?”

Julian paused.

“I chaired it.”

“Why?”

“Operations incident.”

“And Mason provided the security logs?”

“Yes.”

“Caleb’s badge was placed into evidence?”

“It should have been.”

“Who had access?”

Julian’s eyes sharpened slightly.

“Damian, what are you suggesting?”

“I’m asking.”

Julian leaned back.

“Legal. Security command. Possibly the insurer.”

“Your office?”

“Technically.”

Silence.

Julian smiled sadly.

“You think I pushed Noah?”

Nobody moved.

Damian replied, “I think somebody wants me to stop asking questions.”

Julian’s smile disappeared.

After the meeting, the board voted to create an independent special committee.

Damian temporarily lost direct authority over security.

Julian volunteered to recuse himself from the Caleb investigation.

It was an intelligent move.

It made him look innocent.

Outside headquarters, cameras surrounded Damian.

One reporter shouted, “Mr. Vale, is it true the woman who rescued your son had previously threatened your company?”

Damian stopped.

“What?”

Another called, “Anna Cole filed a multimillion-dollar wrongful-death claim after her brother died at your harbor. Was your son targeted as revenge?”

Damian’s blood ran cold.

That information had come from a confidential claims file.

Someone inside Vale Maritime had leaked it.

By noon Anna’s photograph was everywhere.

HERO OR SUSPECT?

GRIEVING SISTER SAVES BILLIONAIRE’S SON AFTER SUING HIS COMPANY.

Anna stood outside her apartment while reporters shouted questions.

“Did you push Noah Vale?”

“Were you carrying your brother’s badge?”

“Did you enter the harbor illegally?”

She slammed the door.

Ten minutes later Damian called.

“Did you give the press anything?”

Anna almost laughed.

“You think I leaked my own lawsuit so people could call me a child killer?”

“I’m asking.”

“And I’m answering. No.”

Damian remained silent.

Anna’s anger rose.

“You still think it might be me.”

“My son was almost murdered.”

“And I saved him!”

“You also came to the harbor secretly.”

“Because someone lured me there.”

“You withheld that from my team.”

“For twenty minutes.”

“Twenty minutes matter.”

Anna’s voice dropped.

“You know what matters? Caleb was dead for six months and nobody cared about missing security records until your son almost died.”

Damian had no answer.

That afternoon Mara’s attorney filed an emergency custody petition.

The affidavit stated that Noah had been exposed to extraordinary risk while in Damian’s care.

It did not accuse Damian of causing the incident.

It did not need to.

Damian read the filing in silence.

He could lose everyday access to his son.

Anna, meanwhile, received an email from an address she did not recognize.

Attached was a photograph.

Caleb.

Timestamped the night he died.

He stood outside the harbor security control room.

Facing Mason Rourke.

The two men were arguing.

In the corner of the image, partially reflected in a window, another man stood watching.

Anna enlarged it.

Dark suit.

Silver tie clip.

She had seen him on television.

At press conferences.

Standing beside Damian.

Julian Vale.

Anna immediately called Damian.

He answered coldly.

“What?”

“I have something.”

She sent the photograph.

Silence.

Then Damian whispered:

“Where did you get this?”

“Anonymous email.”

Julian’s reflection was blurry.

Not enough to prove anything.

Enough to destroy Damian’s ability to dismiss the possibility.

Anna said, “Your brother was there the night Caleb died.”

Damian stared at the image.

Julian had told the investigation he was at a charity dinner downtown.

And Damian had believed him.
