Chapter 4 - Olivia Mercer

It took Daniel’s investigator less than twelve hours.
Vanessa Hale existed.
Just not from birth.
Her legal name had been changed seven years earlier.
Before that, she was Olivia Mercer.
Ethan stared at the photograph on Daniel’s laptop.
Same eyes.
Same angular face.
Different hair.
Twenty-eight years old.
Olivia Mercer had worked as a junior analyst at Carrington Capital, one of Bennett Hospitality’s lenders.
Claire Bennett had served on Bennett Hospitality’s audit committee at the same time.
“They knew each other professionally,” Daniel said.
“How well?”
“We’re still reconstructing that.”
“Why did Vanessa lie?”
“We need to ask her.”
Ethan laughed without humor.
“She isn’t answering.”
Noah was at school under additional security.
Ethan had almost kept him home.
Noah insisted on going.
“I don’t want Vanessa to steal school too.”
The sentence stayed with Ethan all morning.
Daniel opened another file.
“Olivia Mercer’s father was Thomas Mercer.”
Ethan recognized the name.
“Mercer Development.”
“Yes.”
Thomas Mercer had owned a regional hotel-development company.
Twelve years earlier, Bennett Hospitality acquired several of its properties after Mercer collapsed under debt.
Thomas later sued, claiming the Bennett group had used confidential lender information to force him into a distressed sale.
The case was dismissed.
Two years later Thomas died.
Ethan remembered almost none of it.
His father, Richard Bennett, still ran the company then.
“What does that have to do with Claire?”
“Possibly nothing.”
“Possibly?”
Daniel showed him an internal email from seven years earlier.
Claire had written it to Ethan’s father.
Subject: MERCER ACQUISITION REVIEW.
I do not believe our disclosure regarding lender communications was complete. Before we close the matter, I want an independent review.
Ethan read it again.
“My father never told me.”
“Claire may not have either.”
“Why?”
“She might have still been investigating.”
Daniel produced another email.
This one from Claire to Olivia Mercer.
I understand why you contacted me. I cannot promise the outcome you want, but I can promise I will look at the original files.
Ethan stood.
“Vanessa contacted my wife.”
“Yes.”
“Years before Claire died.”
“Yes.”
“And then changed her name.”
“Yes.”
“And later met me pretending we were strangers.”
“Yes.”
Ethan walked to the window.
His entire relationship rearranged itself behind him.
The charity gala.
Vanessa laughing at his terrible joke.
Her surprise when he introduced himself.
Her careful questions about Noah.
Her admiration for the Bennett mansion.
Had any of it been accidental?
Daniel said, “Do not leap beyond the evidence.”
Ethan turned.
“She targeted me.”
“Possibly.”
“Daniel.”
“We know she concealed her identity. We know she communicated with Claire. We know she later approached you under another name.”
“And tried to control Noah’s trust.”
“Yes.”
“But we do not know her original intention when she met you.”
Ethan hated that Daniel was right.
Facts.
Not fear.
It was the lesson Noah had forced on him.
That afternoon, Ethan drove to the school himself.
Noah climbed into the SUV and placed his backpack carefully between his feet.
“How was your day?”
“Fine.”
“What happened?”
“Lucas said my family is on the internet.”
Ethan’s chest tightened.
“What did he say?”
“That Vanessa stole something.”
“Who told him?”
“His sister.”
Ethan had tried to contain the incident.
Vanessa’s departure from the engagement mansion had already attracted gossip.
No names involving Noah had been released.
Still, children heard things.
“Did Lucas bother you?”
“No.”
“He asked if we have a secret dungeon.”
Ethan smiled despite himself.
“Do we?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Noah looked out the window.
Then said, “Is Vanessa coming back?”
“Not to live with us.”
“Are you still marrying her?”
“No.”
The boy turned.
“Really?”
“Really.”
Relief appeared so quickly that Ethan almost missed it.
“Didn’t you like her?”
“I did.”
“Then why not?”
“Because loving or liking somebody doesn’t mean you ignore what they do.”
Noah nodded thoughtfully.
“Like when I love you but you didn’t believe me.”
Ethan swallowed.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then Noah asked, “Do you know what was in Mommy’s letter?”
“Not yet.”
“Maybe she says who Vanessa is.”
“Maybe.”
They reached home.
Owen was waiting in the front hall.
“We found the blue box.”
Ethan stopped.
“Where?”
“Courier locker at Union Station.”
“Vanessa left it there?”
“Not exactly.”
Owen held up a printed notification.
“The locker was rented under Olivia Mercer.”
Daniel arrived minutes later.
With police present because of the disputed property, the locker was opened.
The blue box sat inside.
Untouched.
Claire’s journals.
The flash drive.
Copies of legal papers.
And one sealed envelope addressed in Claire’s handwriting.
ETHAN — ONLY IF OLIVIA MERCER COMES BACK.
Ethan stared at the name.
Claire had not merely known Vanessa.
May you like
She had expected her return.
