Chapter 8 - The Missing Lawyer

Police located Blake Harlan the next morning.

He was not fleeing the country.

He was sitting in a rented cabin near Lake Arrowhead with two laptops and a shredder.

That looked worse.

His attorney immediately insisted Blake had gone there to “organize confidential client records away from media pressure.”

Investigators were unconvinced.

No arrest occurred that day.

But the laptops were preserved under court order after Harlan & Pierce sued to recover firm property.

One laptop contained enough drafts to explain the plan.

Vanessa had wanted leverage over Bennett Hospitality.

Charles had wanted family voting stability.

Blake wanted something larger.

He had designed a private foundation whose control provisions were buried beneath layers of trustee language.

On paper, Vanessa and Charles would serve as visible directors.

In practice, a management company owned by Blake would control appointment rights.

Daniel read the clause twice.

“He was setting himself up to control the people who controlled the shares.”

Ethan sat across from him.

“So Vanessa was being used too.”

“Possibly.”

“Charles?”

“Almost certainly.”

“That doesn’t make either innocent.”

“No.”

The deeper they looked, the less the story resembled one villain manipulating everyone else.

It was a chain of people choosing what they wanted to believe.

Vanessa believed Blake because he offered revenge dressed as legality.

Charles believed Blake because he offered control dressed as stability.

Ethan believed Vanessa because she offered love dressed as certainty.

And Noah had paid for all of it.

At school, Noah had started checking his backpack three times before leaving class.

His teacher, Ms. Jennings, quietly told Ethan.

“He opens every pocket.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

“Does he seem afraid?”

“Not exactly.”

She chose her words carefully.

“He says he wants to know what is his.”

That night Ethan sat beside Noah while the boy packed for school.

“Can I help?”

Noah hesitated.

“Okay.”

They placed reading folder.

Math notebook.

Pencil case.

Lunch.

One toy dinosaur.

“You’re not supposed to bring that.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Emergency.”

Ethan nodded solemnly.

“Reasonable.”

Noah smiled.

Then he checked the front pocket again.

Ethan said, “You know Vanessa can’t get into the house now.”

“I know.”

“You don’t have to keep checking.”

“I want to.”

Ethan almost told him not to worry.

Instead he remembered Claire’s letter.

Find out what happened.

Protect Noah before the Bennett name.

“Okay.”

Noah zipped the bag.

After a moment he asked, “Why did Vanessa do it?”

Ethan could have said because she was angry.

Because she wanted money.

Because adults are complicated.

Instead:

“She wanted me to make a decision. She thought if I believed bad things about you, I would make the decision she wanted.”

Noah frowned.

“So she lied about me to control you.”

Ethan blinked.

“Yes.”

“Did it work?”

“No.”

A pause.

“It almost did.”

Noah looked down.

Ethan added, “Because I hesitated.”

The boy nodded.

“I know.”

“I’m working on that.”

“How?”

“By asking questions.”

Noah considered it.

“You ask a lot now.”

“I do.”

“It’s annoying.”

Ethan laughed.

“That runs in the family.”

The next major answer came from Claire’s flash drive.

Daniel found an encrypted folder.

The password was not difficult.

NOAH0708.

Inside were transcripts from Claire’s conversations with Olivia Mercer.

One transcript changed everything.

Claire: If you want a settlement, you need evidence of actual losses attributable to Richard’s conduct.

Olivia: I have evidence.

Claire: Then bring it.

Olivia: Your uncle already saw it.

Claire: Charles?

Olivia: He said he would fix it.

Claire: When?

Olivia: Last Thursday.

Ethan stared.

“Charles knew Olivia before Vanessa ever met me.”

Daniel looked equally stunned.

The conversation was seven years old.

Charles had just claimed he learned her former identity months ago.

He had lied.

Ethan called him.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Owen checked mansion access.

Charles’s guest credential had been used forty minutes earlier.

“Where?”

Ethan asked.

Owen’s face changed.

“The old west office.”

Claire’s former study.

They ran.

The room was empty.

One drawer stood open.

Claire’s original copy of the Mercer acquisition file was gone.

On the desk lay a note.

Not handwritten.

Printed.

YOU ARE MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE CLAIRE DID.

Ethan stared at it.

Daniel said, “Charles didn’t come here to explain himself.”

No.

He had come to remove something.

May you like

And if Claire’s files were right, Uncle Charles had been part of the Mercer story from the beginning.
