Chapter 13 - The Witness Who Lied

Nora was supposed to be Daniel’s strongest witness.

Then she changed her statement.

Detective Torres called Maya first.

“Nora now says she knew Emily’s Bellweather stay could be long-term.”

Daniel stared at Maya.

“That isn’t what she told us.”

“No.”

“She said she thought it was weeks.”

“I know.”

“Why would she change it?”

Maya’s answer was immediate.

“Fear. Money. Guilt. Pressure. We find out.”

Nora refused Daniel’s calls.

Then Rebecca’s attorney released copies of Nora’s text messages.

One message was devastating.

Nora: If Daniel ever finds out what we did with Harbor Light, I’m finished.

Rebecca replied:

He won’t.

The text was real.

Daniel felt betrayed.

Again.

When Nora finally met Maya, she admitted the truth.

She had known some foundation transfers were improper.

Not the whole scheme.

But enough.

Rebecca had promised her $100,000 total.

Thirty thousand had already been paid.

Nora also knew Rebecca intended Emily to stay away for at least one school term.

Daniel met her only after her attorney approved.

“Why did you lie to me?”

Nora cried.

“Because I was afraid you’d fire me.”

“You thought lying would help?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I was ashamed.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You helped pack my daughter.”

“I know.”

“You saw she was frightened.”

“I know.”

“And you still put her suitcase by the chapel.”

Nora’s voice broke.

“I kept telling myself Rebecca knew what was best because you trusted her.”

Daniel went still.

There it was again.

His trust had become everyone else’s permission.

“I did trust her.”

Nora looked at him.

“So did I.”

The answer stopped him.

Power reversals rarely announced themselves.

Sometimes Daniel was victim.

Sometimes he was the man whose certainty allowed other people to stop asking questions.

Nora agreed to cooperate fully.

She returned the remaining money.

She provided bank records.

She also gave investigators something nobody knew existed.

A voicemail.

Rebecca had accidentally left it while talking to Caleb.

Caleb’s voice:

“Once Emily is admitted, Daniel will lose his mind.”

Rebecca:

“You keep saying that like it’s useful.”

“It is useful.”

“How?”

“Because the board already has concerns.”

“What concerns?”

“The concerns they’ll have after we give them the recordings.”

Then Rebecca laughed.

“You’re evil.”

Caleb answered calmly.

“No. Prepared.”

The recording helped.

But Nora’s credibility was damaged.

A defense lawyer could now say she was a paid participant changing her story to save herself.

Daniel understood.

Evidence was never magically clean.

Then the company suffered a blow.

Two banks froze negotiations on a major refinancing.

A lender publicly cited “leadership instability and unresolved governance concerns.”

Mercer Development’s bonds fell.

Caroline called Daniel.

“We may have to sell something.”

“Not East Harbor.”

“We may not have a choice.”

“That’s exactly what Caleb wants.”

“I know.”

“But?”

“But payroll is real. Debt covenants are real.”

Daniel looked at Claire’s notebook.

His emotional battle and the company’s financial survival had become entangled.

Caleb knew it.

Later that day, Caleb sent Daniel a private message.

Sell East Harbor to Baycrest and I walk away. Rebecca becomes your problem, not mine.

Daniel showed Maya.

“Blackmail?”

“Could be evidence of coercive bargaining. Do not label crimes yourself.”

“What should I do?”

“Nothing.”

“I hate doing nothing.”

“I’ve noticed.”

Then Rebecca requested another meeting.

This time she offered something concrete.

The original device used to create Daniel’s forged signature profile.

She would surrender it if prosecutors considered cooperation credit.

Daniel stared at Maya.

“Can she negotiate that?”

“She can ask. Prosecutors decide.”

Rebecca had moved from denying the conspiracy to bargaining with its evidence.

Caleb had lost Nora.

Now he might lose Rebecca.

May you like

But Daniel’s company was weakening fast.

And the longer the investigation lasted, the more likely Caleb was to get what he wanted simply by waiting.
