Chapter 7 - Claire’s Locked Drawer

Claire’s study had remained almost untouched.
Daniel had converted the room into an archive after her death, but he rarely entered.
Emily sometimes did.
She said it still smelled like her mother.
Daniel entered that evening with Nora.
“What are we looking for?” Nora asked.
“Anything Claire kept about East Harbor.”
There were twelve filing cabinets.
Most contained design plans, charitable records, and old company reports.
Claire had helped Daniel build Mercer Development from a regional property company into a national hospitality group.
She had never held the CEO title.
But she had understood numbers better than Daniel.
He had been the salesman.
Claire had been the skeptic.
Daniel found the locked drawer at the bottom of her desk.
He did not have the key.
Emily did.
She walked in holding a small silver key on a chain.
“Mommy gave it to me.”
Daniel stared.
“When?”
“When she was sick.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You never asked.”
The sentence struck him.
Emily unlocked the drawer.
Inside were notebooks.
Claire’s handwriting covered the first.
EAST HARBOR — RUSK / VENDORS / OVERRUNS
Daniel sat down.
Claire had documented unexplained payments totaling $3.6 million.
Consulting fees.
Land-use research.
Community-relations invoices.
Several vendors had mailing addresses connected to the same registered agent.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Baycrest Advisory LLC.
Not Baycrest Capital Partners, the buyer now trying to acquire East Harbor.
But close enough to matter.
Maya arrived an hour later.
She examined the notebook.
“This is not proof of fraud.”
“No.”
“But it tells us where to look.”
One page contained an argument Claire recorded almost verbatim.
Caleb says I am undermining him.
Daniel says I am exhausted and seeing patterns.
Daniel stopped reading.
Nora looked away.
Emily sat on the carpet coloring.
Daniel remembered the fight.
Claire had been halfway through chemotherapy.
She came into their bedroom holding invoices.
“You need to audit Caleb.”
Daniel had been packing for Chicago.
“Claire, not tonight.”
“He’s moving money through shell consultants.”
“Caleb has worked with me for fifteen years.”
“So?”
“He would not steal from us.”
Claire had stared at him.
“You believe loyalty is a personality trait instead of something that needs evidence.”
Daniel had become angry.
“You’re sick. You’re tired.”
He remembered her expression now.
Not anger.
Betrayal.
“You are using my illness to make my judgment smaller.”
He had apologized later.
But he had not ordered the audit.
Claire died four months afterward.
Daniel covered his face.
Maya quietly closed the notebook.
“Regret is not evidence either.”
“I dismissed her.”
“Yes.”
“I made Caleb untouchable.”
“Then stop doing that now.”
The forensic accountant traced one of Claire’s old vendors.
Baycrest Advisory had received $2.1 million from Mercer Development between 2021 and 2023.
The company dissolved after Claire’s death.
Its manager had been a Delaware service firm.
But the bank behind one account responded to a preservation request.
A beneficial ownership form existed.
Daniel had to obtain it through subpoena.
Meanwhile, Nora searched old expense records.
She found something else.
Rebecca had billed Baycrest Advisory six years earlier through her communications company.
Daniel stared.
Rebecca and Caleb had not merely known each other socially.
They had both been financially tied to the same suspicious vendor Claire investigated.
Emily approached the desk.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is Mommy helping us?”
Daniel looked at Claire’s notebook.
“In a way.”
Emily touched the cover.
“She said grown-ups hide things in boring places because kids don’t look there.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Your mother was usually right.”
“Usually?”
He looked at her.
“She was wrong about one thing.”
“What?”
“She thought I would eventually figure all this out by myself.”
His smile disappeared.
“I didn’t.”
That night, Maya received the first corporate server results.
The forged proxy had been created from an older document containing Daniel’s genuine digital signature.
The source file had been accessed from Caleb’s credentials.
But the editing metadata contained another username.
R.SLOAN-CONSULT.
May you like
Rebecca.
The two people who had betrayed Daniel personally were now linked technically to the document that could have transferred control of his company.
