Chapter 13 - The Man Behind Northstar

Richard did not pour the gasoline.

Not yet.

He set the can beside the files.

“You look disappointed,” he said.

Daniel watched his hands.

“I was expecting something more sophisticated.”

Richard smiled.

“There he is.”

Vanessa whispered, “Give them the files.”

Richard ignored her.

“You know what I always liked about you, Daniel?”

“No.”

“You mistake arrogance for standards.”

Daniel kept him talking.

Outside, police would be searching for another way in.

Richard continued.

“You built Mercer Medical because you couldn’t tolerate anyone else making decisions.”

“I built it because hospitals needed better tools.”

“You built it because control makes you feel safe.”

Daniel thought of Rachel.

“Both can be true.”

Richard’s smile weakened.

That answer was not the one he expected.

“You’ve changed.”

“I got arrested.”

“Temporary inconvenience.”

“My daughter stopped trusting me.”

Richard shrugged.

“Children recover.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Not from everything.”

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

Richard followed Daniel’s gaze.

“Don’t waste sympathy on her.”

“I’m not.”

Vanessa flinched.

Richard laughed.

“Good.”

Daniel asked, “Why Rachel?”

For the first time Richard’s expression changed.

“She understood finance better than you.”

“She understood people better.”

“That too.”

“You approached her during Redwood.”

“Yes.”

“You arranged Alderwick financing.”

“I connected it.”

“And Northstar collected the fees.”

“Legally.”

“Through undisclosed structures.”

Richard smiled.

“You really want to discuss disclosure?”

Daniel accepted the hit.

“No.”

That answer bothered Richard again.

Daniel continued.

“Rachel discovered what you were doing.”

“She discovered too much.”

“So you threatened me through her.”

“I explained consequences.”

“You knew she was dying.”

Richard’s face remained calm.

“That made her unusually difficult to intimidate.”

Vanessa whispered, “You told me she was paranoid.”

“She was.”

“She was right.”

Richard turned on her.

“She was dying and still managed to outplay you.”

The anger in his voice exposed something.

Daniel saw it.

Rachel had humiliated him.

The conspiracy had not been only financial.

It had become personal.

“What did she change?” Daniel asked.

Richard stared.

“You still don’t know?”

“The trust clause.”

Richard laughed.

“That was part of it.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“What else?”

Richard stepped toward the file boxes.

“She created a shareholder option.”

Daniel frowned.

“If anyone acquired more than twenty-five percent of Mercer Medical through pledged family assets obtained by fraud, the trust could force sale of a block to independent directors at a predefined formula.”

Daniel understood.

A poison pill.

Rachel had embedded an anti-takeover mechanism inside her estate planning.

Richard nodded.

“She made the company impossible for me to seize through your daughters.”

“Then why continue?”

“Because documents can be amended.”

“Not after she died.”

“No.”

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“But widowers remarry.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

There it was.

The entire marriage strategy in one sentence.

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?”

“Not at first.”

Richard laughed.

“She knew enough.”

Vanessa turned.

“You told me you only wanted access.”

“And you wanted six million dollars erased.”

“I loved him.”

Richard’s expression became vicious.

“No. You loved his house.”

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

Richard grabbed her wrist.

Daniel moved.

“Let her go.”

Richard looked at him.

“You still protecting her?”

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I’m protecting the truth from becoming another excuse.”

Richard released Vanessa.

She stumbled backward.

Daniel asked, “The sauna. Whose idea?”

Vanessa started crying.

Richard smiled.

“Hers.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“The medical emergency was his plan.”

“The sauna was yours.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel felt nausea.

Richard continued.

“She said the girls used it after swimming. Easy malfunction. Easy panic.”

Vanessa whispered, “I said we could frighten them.”

“You said hospitalize them.”

“I said make Daniel think they needed a hospital.”

Richard laughed softly.

“You see the distinction she needs?”

Daniel’s face went cold.

“And the insurance?”

Richard’s eyes sharpened.

“What about it?”

“You insured my daughters.”

“For succession liquidity.”

“Without consent.”

“Paperwork is flexible.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You told me you canceled those policies.”

Richard smiled at her.

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

Her face collapsed.

Daniel saw something finally break inside Vanessa.

Not innocence.

She had none left.

The illusion that she had ever been Richard’s partner.

She had been an asset.

Just like everyone else.

Vanessa looked toward the file vault.

Then at Daniel.

A tiny movement of her eyes.

Daniel understood.

The emergency sprinkler valve stood behind Richard.

Vanessa lunged.

Not at Richard.

At the wall lever.

Richard grabbed her.

Daniel tackled him.

All three crashed against the workbench.

The gasoline can fell.

Liquid spilled across the concrete.

Richard struck Daniel across the face.

Daniel stumbled.

Vanessa pulled the sprinkler lever.

An alarm screamed.

Water exploded from overhead pipes.

Outside, the manual fire signal bypassed Richard’s security override.

Ortiz’s team moved.

Richard shoved Vanessa aside and ran for the vault.

He grabbed a hard drive.

Daniel caught his arm.

Richard punched him again.

Daniel hit back.

Once.

Then stopped.

Richard stared, almost inviting more.

“Go ahead.”

Daniel thought of Grace.

Impact.

Apology.

Impact.

Apology.

He lowered his fist.

“No.”

The steel door burst inward.

Police flooded the room.

“Hands!”

Richard froze.

Vanessa raised both hands.

Daniel stepped away.

Ortiz entered last.

Water poured around them.

She looked at Richard.

“Richard Sloan, you are under arrest.”

Richard laughed.

“For what?”

Ortiz glanced toward the open vault.

“We’ll start with conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering and reckless endangerment.”

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“She’ll bury herself before she testifies.”

Vanessa was crying.

But when Ortiz turned toward her, she extended her wrists.

“I know.”

Daniel stared.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I locked the door.”

No excuse.

No Richard.

No debt.

No fear.

Just fact.

Ortiz cuffed her.

As officers led Vanessa away, she stopped beside Daniel.

“I did love them once.”

Daniel looked at her.

Maybe she was telling the truth.

That made what she had done worse, not better.

He said nothing.

Richard was taken next.

The vault remained open.

Daniel walked inside.

On the top shelf sat a sealed envelope.

His name.

Rachel’s handwriting.

He reached for it.

Inside was a single page Richard had hidden for seven years.

Daniel read the first line.

If Richard ever uses my death to make you angry, don’t give him that gift.

Daniel laughed.

May you like

Then cried.

For the first time since Rachel died, he allowed himself to do both.
