Chapter 5 - What Celeste Buried

Daniel drove straight to Celeste’s house.

He did not call.

He did not warn her.

When she opened the door and saw his face, she knew.

“You found Rachel’s file.”

“You knew.”

Celeste stepped aside.

Daniel entered.

“Where are the girls?”

“Asleep.”

“Good.”

He turned on her.

“How long?”

Celeste closed the door carefully.

“Daniel—”

“How long did you know Rachel was investigating Vanessa?”

“I didn’t know her name then.”

“That is not an answer.”

Celeste’s eyes hardened.

“Lower your voice.”

“My wife was investigating the woman I later married.”

“And your daughters are upstairs.”

The words cut through him.

Daniel dropped his voice.

“How long?”

Celeste sat at the dining table.

“Rachel came to me eight months before she died.”

Daniel remained standing.

“She said someone connected to Northstar had contacted her pretending to be interested in buying company shares.”

“Vanessa?”

“She used the name Vanessa Reed. Rachel thought she was working for Richard.”

“And you never told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“During Rachel’s treatment.”

Daniel stared.

Celeste gave a bitter smile.

“You told me I was upsetting her.”

Memory returned.

A hospital corridor.

Celeste saying Rachel was frightened about the company.

Daniel accusing his sister of bringing business drama into an oncology ward.

He had ordered her to leave.

Celeste continued.

“After Rachel died, I found copies of some records. I brought them to you.”

“I don’t remember.”

“I do.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“You were drunk.”

Daniel looked away.

“You told me Rachel had spent her final months becoming paranoid.”

He sank into a chair.

Celeste whispered, “That was the last time I tried.”

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Daniel asked, “Why keep the documents?”

“Because Rachel asked me to.”

Celeste went upstairs.

She returned carrying a small metal document box.

Inside were letters.

Bank records.

A sealed envelope.

On the front, Rachel had written:

For Daniel, when he is finally ready to listen.

Daniel’s hands trembled.

He opened it.

The letter was short.

Daniel,

If you are reading this because Richard has come back into your life, then I was right to be afraid.

Do not assume the person closest to him understands his full plan.

Richard rarely tells one person the whole truth.

And please, for once, do not make this about winning.

Protect Emma.

Protect Sophie.

Let someone else protect the company.

Rachel

Daniel read the last sentence twice.

Celeste watched him.

“She knew.”

“That I was an idiot?”

“That you would choose the company first if someone made you believe you had to.”

Daniel folded the letter slowly.

His phone rang.

Grace.

She had located Solenne Strategy Group’s bankruptcy records.

Vanessa had been a co-founder.

Richard Sloan had been an undisclosed guarantor on one of its credit lines.

“How much?” Daniel asked.

“Six point four million dollars in personal guarantees and related claims.”

Daniel looked at Celeste.

“Vanessa told me she sold her wellness consultancy for a profit.”

“She didn’t,” Grace said.

“It collapsed?”

“Yes.”

“Then how did she clear the debt?”

“She didn’t.”

Grace paused.

“At least not officially.”

A former Solenne creditor had sold the claims to Northstar.

Richard’s company.

Vanessa’s debt had effectively become Richard’s property.

Now the line from the sauna recording made sense.

Your debt disappears.

Richard had owned Vanessa’s financial future before she ever married Daniel.

Maybe her future in other ways too.

Daniel wanted to believe that meant Vanessa had been forced.

Then he remembered Sophie sagging against Emma.

No debt made that acceptable.

The next morning Vanessa’s divorce attorney filed an emergency motion in Westchester County Supreme Court.

She claimed Daniel had financially controlled her throughout their marriage, threatened her after discovering her relationship with Richard and used corporate security systems to surveil her private conversations.

The filing requested temporary access to marital funds.

Daniel read it in Grace’s office.

“She’s making herself the victim.”

“She is also protecting access to money.”

“She locked two children in a sauna.”

Grace nodded.

“And the criminal investigation is separate from the divorce.”

Daniel threw the filing down.

Grace did not flinch.

“Stop reacting emotionally.”

“My daughters nearly—”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Grace leaned forward.

“I know exactly what Richard wants you to do.”

Daniel stopped.

“He wants you furious. Loud. Reckless.”

Grace tapped the complaint.

“He included sworn statements from household staff saying you regularly shouted at Vanessa.”

Daniel’s silence confirmed enough.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Threaten her?”

“I told her if she moved the girls’ belongings again without asking, I’d throw every piece of furniture she owned onto the lawn.”

Grace closed her eyes.

“That was a metaphor.”

“A judge does not care about your literary intent.”

Daniel stood.

He hated being forced to examine himself while Vanessa was under investigation.

That was precisely why he needed to.

Grace continued.

“There’s more.”

Vanessa claimed the trust restructuring had originally been Daniel’s idea.

Attached was a handwritten note.

Daniel recognized his own writing.

CONSOLIDATE FAMILY OWNERSHIP BEFORE SERIES E.

Below it:

NEED CLEAN VOTING CONTROL.

It was authentic.

Grace said, “Richard didn’t invent your obsession with control.”

Daniel stared at the paper.

“No.”

“He weaponized it.”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa?”

Daniel thought of Rachel’s letter.

Do not assume the person closest to him understands his full plan.

“I need to talk to her.”

Grace immediately said, “No.”

“Why?”

“Because she’s represented.”

“I’m not asking her about the divorce.”

“You’re asking her about a criminal conspiracy.”

“Yes.”

“That sentence did not improve the idea.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

I KNOW WHAT RICHARD WANTS.

I KNOW WHAT HE DID TO RACHEL.

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH, COME WITHOUT POLICE.

Grace watched Daniel’s face.

“What?”

He showed her.

Grace read it.

Then looked up.

“You are absolutely not going alone.”

Daniel stared at the message.

For the first time since the sauna, Vanessa appeared to be offering him something other than a lie.

But Rachel’s warning echoed in his mind.

Richard rarely tells one person the whole truth.

Daniel realized the same might be true of Vanessa.

And if she knew what Richard had done to Rachel—

then his marriage had begun with secrets much older than he had imagined.
