Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Price

Vanessa chose a quiet hotel lounge in Manhattan.

Public.

Expensive.

Anonymous.

Grace hated the idea but arranged for Daniel’s criminal attorney to remain nearby. Detective Ortiz was informed but did not attend.

New York law allowed Daniel to record a conversation he participated in.

He placed his phone in his jacket pocket.

Vanessa arrived twelve minutes late.

She looked nothing like the immaculate woman beside the sauna.

No makeup.

Hair loose.

Dark circles under her eyes.

Daniel felt nothing resembling sympathy.

She sat across from him.

“How are the girls?”

“You don’t get to ask that first.”

Her mouth tightened.

“Daniel—”

“Why did Rachel know your name?”

Vanessa looked down.

There it was.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“You met her.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“Why?”

“Richard sent me.”

Daniel leaned back slowly.

Vanessa rubbed her thumb against the edge of her cup.

“Solenne was collapsing. Richard had money in the company. More than I knew. When our investors pulled out, he bought some of the debt.”

“So you worked for him.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Her eyes flicked toward Daniel.

“You know.”

“The affair.”

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel felt almost insulted by how little the affair mattered.

“Rachel?”

“Richard wanted information about Mercer Medical’s shareholder structure.”

“You approached my dying wife.”

“I didn’t know she was sick when I accepted the job.”

“But you continued after you knew.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s hands closed under the table.

“Why?”

“Because I owed millions of dollars.”

“So did thousands of people during bankruptcies. They don’t infiltrate families.”

“You think debt is just a number because you’ve always had enough money to turn it into a negotiation.”

Daniel almost answered.

Then stopped.

There was truth inside the accusation.

Vanessa continued.

“Richard owned my personal guarantees. My apartment. Everything.”

“You could have gone to the police.”

“With what? A confession that I had helped falsify invoices at Solenne?”

Daniel stared.

“You committed fraud.”

Vanessa’s face crumpled briefly.

“We inflated consulting revenue before the final financing round. I signed off on it.”

“How much?”

“About eight hundred thousand.”

“And Richard knew.”

“He arranged it.”

Daniel felt cold.

“So he blackmailed you.”

“For years.”

“And then you married me.”

Vanessa’s eyes lifted.

“At first, Richard wanted me near you.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“At first?”

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds like my marriage was an assignment.”

“It became more than that.”

“No.”

“It did.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Daniel’s voice remained quiet.

“You do not get to use love as mitigation after standing outside that door.”

Vanessa looked down.

For several seconds only hotel music filled the space.

Finally Daniel asked, “What happened with Rachel?”

“She discovered Richard was using Northstar to collect payments from the emergency financing.”

“I know.”

“She planned to expose him.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“Because she discovered your name on the original authorization.”

Daniel went still.

Vanessa continued.

“Richard told her if she exposed Northstar, regulators would investigate the side agreement and the consulting payments. He said the company could lose its next financing. He told her you could face fraud allegations.”

“Was he right?”

“Partly.”

Daniel thought of the old Redwood transaction.

The unreported consulting arrangement.

The signature he had barely read.

“How do you know?”

“Because Richard showed me everything.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Why did you lock the sauna?”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

He waited.

“I need the truth.”

Her eyes glistened.

“Richard said you were going to call Grace before signing.”

“I was.”

“He said if Grace reviewed the package, she’d find the forged First Harbor consent.”

“You knew it was forged?”

Vanessa nodded.

Daniel felt rage rise.

“Continue.”

“We needed you emotionally overwhelmed.”

His expression changed.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“The plan was to keep Emma and Sophie inside long enough for them to become frightened and sick. Then I would open the door and pretend the lock malfunctioned.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You planned to hurt them.”

“I thought they’d recover.”

“You thought?”

“I wasn’t trying to kill them.”

“You stood there while Sophie could barely stand.”

“I panicked.”

“You did nothing.”

“Richard said if we opened it too early—”

Daniel slammed one hand onto the table.

Vanessa flinched.

Several people turned.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Do not finish that sentence by blaming Richard.”

Vanessa whispered, “I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

Daniel stood.

She grabbed his wrist.

“Wait.”

He looked at her hand.

She released him.

“Richard never intended just to take your shares.”

Daniel remained standing.

“He has copies of the Redwood documents. Real copies.”

“What does he want?”

“Mercer Medical.”

“How?”

“He’s been buying distressed minority positions through Northstar-linked funds for years.”

Daniel stared.

“The trust restructuring would have allowed Northstar to call the family holding company’s debt if the stock value fell below a covenant.”

“And then?”

“He would seize the pledged units.”

Daniel finally understood.

Richard was not stealing cash.

He was constructing a route to control the company.

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She removed a small brass key.

“Safe-deposit box. Midtown Federal. Box 814.”

“What’s inside?”

“Richard’s ledger.”

“Why do you have it?”

“Insurance.”

Daniel did not touch the key.

“Against him?”

“Against everyone.”

A strange expression crossed her face.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Richard thinks I destroyed it.”

Daniel slowly took the key.

Vanessa whispered, “There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“The night Rachel died, Richard was furious.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“Rachel died in hospice.”

“I know.”

“Don’t turn this into something it wasn’t.”

“I’m not.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“He wasn’t angry because she died.”

She looked directly at Daniel.

“He was angry because before she lost consciousness, Rachel changed something.”

“What?”

“I never found out.”

Daniel stared.

Vanessa whispered, “Richard said she had taken the company away from him without you even knowing.”

A server passed their table.

Daniel heard nothing.

His phone vibrated.

Grace.

Then again.

Three missed calls.

He answered.

Grace spoke immediately.

“Do not go to the safe-deposit box.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why?”

“Because Midtown Federal just reported an attempted access.”

“By whom?”

Grace paused.

“Vanessa Mercer.”

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Across the table, Vanessa was already standing.

Her frightened expression had vanished.

Daniel looked at the brass key in his hand.

Then at her.

“You called me here to give me a key to a box you tried to empty this morning.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I can explain.”

Daniel almost laughed.

For the first time, he understood Rachel’s warning completely.

Vanessa might be afraid of Richard.

She might even hate him.

But that did not mean she had chosen Daniel.

Or his daughters.

As hotel security approached, Vanessa stepped backward.

And Daniel realized the woman who had just confessed to one conspiracy—

might already be setting him up for another.
