Chapter 10 - The Night He Disappeared

Grant messaged Caleb for four days.

Never long.

Never directly threatening.

That made it more effective.

Your mother loved you.

Your mother was afraid.

Your mother made mistakes.

I protected you from some of them.

Caleb hated him.

But he needed answers.

Grant understood that hunger.

On the fifth night Grant wrote:

Ask Ruth why Mara lost custody once.

Caleb confronted Ruth.

She went pale.

“What?”

“Did Mom lose me?”

Ruth sat slowly.

“For three days.”

Caleb felt betrayed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you have had seven years of information thrown at you in two weeks.”

“What happened?”

Mara had suffered severe depression after Caleb’s father died from cancer when Caleb was two.

For a brief period she misused prescription sleeping medication.

Ruth took Caleb voluntarily while Mara entered treatment.

No court terminated custody.

Mara recovered.

Caleb returned home.

Grant had twisted a painful truth into something uglier.

Caleb messaged him:

She got help.

Grant replied:

Yes.

Then:

See? Ramirez gives you saints and monsters. Real people are both.

That sentence worked because part of it was true.

Elena had never called Mara perfect.

But Caleb began wondering what else adults withheld “for his protection.”

Grant sent one last message.

I can prove what happened at the garage.

Where?

Your old house.

Caleb knew better.

He still went.

That was his mistake.

Ruth woke at 2:10 a.m. and found the guest bed empty.

Caleb had slipped out through the kitchen and ordered a rideshare using Ruth’s saved account.

By 2:18, police had been called.

Elena felt terror unlike anything since the station attack.

“Where would he go?”

Ruth showed her the message history Caleb had forgotten to delete fully.

Elena read the address.

Mara’s former apartment building.

Grant was waiting in the alley.

Caleb realized the danger when Grant stepped from behind a parked van.

“You came.”

Caleb backed away.

“You said there was proof.”

“There is.”

“Show me.”

Grant looked thinner.

He had violated release conditions simply by being there.

“Get in.”

“No.”

“Caleb.”

“My name is Rowan.”

Grant flinched.

“You don’t understand what that name cost.”

“You stole it.”

“I saved you.”

Caleb laughed.

“You left Mom on the ground.”

Grant’s face changed.

“Fisk told them.”

“So it’s true.”

“I thought she was dead.”

“You didn’t check?”

“I checked.”

“Was she breathing?”

Grant said nothing.

Caleb’s stomach turned.

“You knew.”

“I panicked.”

“You always panic right before you hurt somebody.”

Grant stepped closer.

Caleb retreated.

“Stay back.”

“I need you to listen.”

Police sirens sounded in the distance.

Grant grabbed Caleb’s wrist.

Caleb shouted.

Then headlights swept into the alley.

A black SUV accelerated toward them.

Grant shoved Caleb behind a dumpster.

The SUV clipped Grant and smashed into a parked car.

Airbags exploded.

Elena arrived seconds later with Chicago Police.

Caleb was alive.

Grant lay on the pavement with a fractured leg.

The SUV driver escaped on foot.

Inside the vehicle police found Harbor Bridge access badges.

One belonged to Diane’s personal assistant.

The attack changed everything.

Someone had tried to reach Grant and Caleb simultaneously.

Diane claimed the SUV had been stolen that evening.

The assistant claimed her badge had disappeared days earlier.

No direct proof tied Diane to the vehicle.

But Grant stopped protecting her.

At the hospital, he demanded federal prosecutors.

“I want a deal.”

Detective Bell stood beside the bed.

“You had seven years.”

“I have evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Grant looked toward Elena.

“Diane ordered Fisk to stop Mara.”

“We know.”

“You don’t know why.”

Bell waited.

Grant swallowed.

“Mara wasn’t only exposing billing fraud.”

“What else?”

“She found the adoption accounts.”

Elena frowned.

“What adoption accounts?”

Grant closed his eyes.

“Harbor Bridge was being paid to move certain children out of legitimate foster cases and into private placements.”

“Paid by whom?”

“People who didn’t want to wait for lawful adoption.”

The room went silent.

“You sold children?” Elena whispered.

Grant started crying.

“I moved paperwork.”

“Children are not paperwork.”

“I know.”

“No. You know now because someone tried to run you over.”

Grant looked at her.

“The passports were part of that system.”

“Why three for Caleb?”

“Because Diane wanted him gone.”

“Why now?”

Grant’s next words chilled everyone.

“Because Caleb is the only living person who was in that garage with Mara.”

Caleb had believed the passports were meant to erase his past.

May you like

Grant revealed something worse.

They were meant to erase his future too.
