Chapter 11 - The Trust Amendment Signed After Death

Samuel Price did not surrender the film.

He did surrender himself to an interview.

With two lawyers.

Inside LAPD headquarters, he spoke as though every sentence had been polished before arrival.

“Yes, I entered the projection booth.”

“Yes, I removed an envelope.”

“No, I did not know it contained film.”

“No, I no longer possess it.”

“Where is it?” Ortiz asked.

“I delivered it to my client.”

“Which client?”

Price invoked privilege.

Ortiz almost smiled.

“Attorney-client privilege does not protect participation in evidence destruction.”

Price’s lawyer intervened.

“No evidence has been destroyed.”

“Then where is it?”

Silence.

Emma did not attend.

Claire Donnelly had finally convinced her that proximity was not control.

Instead she worked with Susan Park on the trust.

The March 14 amendment removing Emma’s Stage 18 rights was not the only suspicious document.

A second amendment, dated February 27, 2018, gave Vanessa broader authority to sell trust assets before Emma turned thirty.

Daniel’s signature looked real.

A handwriting examiner believed it probably was.

Emma felt sick.

“So Dad did give her authority.”

Susan replied, “Possibly.”

“Then everything we thought—”

“Read the last page.”

Emma did.

Daniel had handwritten a limitation beside his signature:

Excludes Stage 18 and any Blake Horizon voting interests reserved for Emma.

Someone had removed that handwritten limitation from the copy later filed.

The original showed faint pressure marks.

Digital scans did not.

The scheme was becoming clear.

They did not always forge entire documents.

They altered small details.

A date.

A page.

A limitation.

A signature block.

Enough truth remained to make the lie expensive to prove.

Ryan arrived carrying a box from his father’s archives.

“Arthur had copies.”

“Of what?”

“Cypress Gate.”

The original 2018 purchase proposal offered forty-two million dollars for Stage 18.

Daniel rejected it.

After Daniel died and the trust amendment was filed, Cypress Gate lowered its effective purchase price through debt offsets and control provisions.

The deal never fully closed because title questions remained.

Instead, Vanessa granted Cypress Gate a long-term development option.

That option was now worth approximately ninety-six million dollars to Julian’s investors.

Emma stared.

“So Dad dies, Mom controls the trust, Julian gets an option, and they wait for the land to appreciate.”

“Yes.”

“They didn’t need to sell immediately.”

“No.”

“They just needed Dad gone.”

Ryan did not answer.

At six that evening, Detective Ortiz called.

Samuel Price had changed his story.

Faced with surveillance footage, he admitted the envelope contained film.

He claimed Vanessa instructed him to retrieve it.

“Where did he take it?” Emma asked.

“To Vanessa.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Of course.

“Does she still have it?”

“He says yes.”

“Can you search her house?”

“We are preparing an affidavit.”

Emma hated the waiting.

Claire made her wait anyway.

Then Vanessa called.

Emma stared at the screen.

Claire said, “Do not answer unless you can stay calm.”

“I’m never calm anymore.”

“That is not a legal strategy.”

Emma answered.

“Hello.”

Vanessa’s voice was quiet.

“Samuel talked.”

“Yes.”

“I have the strip.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against who?”

“Julian.”

That answer changed everything.

Vanessa continued.

“For eight years I was afraid he would destroy me.”

“You helped him.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept film proving what happened?”

“I kept something that made sure he couldn’t turn everything on me.”

Emma’s voice shook.

“Dad died and you kept evidence as leverage.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You think I don’t know what that makes me?”

Emma said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“Julian wants Stage 18 closed before your thirtieth birthday.”

“Why?”

“Because once your voting rights vest, you can challenge every transfer.”

“I’m challenging them now.”

“You don’t have standing over all the shares yet.”

“Then why is he scared?”

Vanessa exhaled.

“Because Daniel created another restriction.”

“What?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“It’s in the missing film.”

Emma stood.

“What did Dad say?”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“He told Julian there was one document he would never find.”

“What document?”

“I don’t know.”

Then the line went dead.

Ten minutes later Detective Ortiz called.

The search warrant for Vanessa’s house had been approved.

But Vanessa was already gone.

So was the film.

And Crownlight security reported that her car had just entered Stage 18.
