Chapter 17 - The Night Daniel Died

Julian Cole did not confess.

Vanessa did.

Not immediately.

For three weeks she remained silent on counsel’s advice.

Then federal prosecutors produced the encrypted drive, bank records, film footage, Samuel Price’s testimony, Melissa Crane’s notarization confession, and the photograph from Mulholland.

Vanessa’s lawyers asked for a proffer.

Emma did not attend.

She read the transcript afterward.

The truth was uglier than any version she had imagined.

Daniel discovered the Orchid Meridian scheme in late 2017.

Vanessa and Julian had diverted money partly to cover failed investments and partly to finance control of Stage 18.

Vanessa believed Daniel would divorce her, remove her from Blake Horizon, expose the affair, and seek civil claims that could destroy her financially.

Julian convinced her there was another path.

Pressure Daniel into signing Cypress Gate rights.

Use Emma’s old proxy email to legitimize certain prior transfers.

Contain the fraud.

Move on.

That was Vanessa’s version of the plan.

Julian’s plan was larger.

On March 12, he brought zolpidem to Daniel’s office.

He crushed multiple tablets into Daniel’s drink while Vanessa argued with her husband.

When Daniel became impaired, Julian demanded signatures.

Daniel refused.

He tried to call police.

Vanessa took the phone.

Then Julian moved Daniel to the car.

Vanessa drove home.

At 2:17 a.m., Julian photographed Daniel at the Mulholland turnout.

Daniel had regained partial consciousness.

He fought.

That caused the scratches.

Julian texted Vanessa.

HE’S STILL BREATHING. DECIDE.

Vanessa stared at the message for forty-one seconds.

Then typed:

FINISH IT.

Julian placed Daniel behind the wheel.

He used a cloth to wipe surfaces.

He put Daniel’s hand on the steering wheel.

Then he released the parking brake on a sloped turnout after positioning the vehicle toward a weak section of barrier.

The car rolled.

Crossed the shoulder.

Went over.

Investigators originally believed Daniel had lost control while driving.

There had been no reason to suspect another person.

Julian returned to Vanessa’s house.

She burned his bloodstained shirt.

Samuel Price handled the financial aftermath.

The key-person policy paid twenty-five million.

The trust amendment shifted Stage 18 control.

Orchid Meridian received eight million.

Cypress Gate retained the development option.

Daniel’s death was transformed into corporate paperwork.

Julian’s motive had not been rage.

It had been arithmetic.

Vanessa’s motive was more complicated.

Money.

Fear.

Humiliation.

The affair.

The threat of prison.

Hatred toward Daniel for controlling the marriage.

And, finally, panic.

She told prosecutors:

“I kept telling myself that if Daniel survived, all of us were ruined.”

The prosecutor asked:

“So you chose his death?”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

No psychological explanation changed the answer.

Emma read that word alone.

Yes.

Ryan sat across from her.

“You don’t have to finish tonight.”

“I do.”

“No.”

She looked up.

“Everyone has spent eight years telling me when I’m ready for the truth.”

Ryan became quiet.

Emma continued reading.

Vanessa admitted destroying evidence.

Lying to Emma.

Manipulating Daniel’s estate.

Using Emma’s signature image without permission.

Authorizing Samuel’s fraudulent trust amendment.

Keeping the missing film strip as leverage against Julian.

Destroying the reel at the premiere because she believed that if the recording vanished, prosecutors could never reconstruct the sequence.

But she had underestimated George.

And film.

And the number of documents money creates.

Ryan said quietly:

“Julian’s federal indictment was unsealed.”

Charges included wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, obstruction, and witness tampering.

Los Angeles County charged him with first-degree murder and conspiracy.

Vanessa faced homicide conspiracy charges, fraud-related counts, obstruction, and forgery-related offenses.

Samuel Price pleaded guilty to obstruction and fraud conspiracy.

Melissa Crane received a cooperation agreement conditioned on truthful testimony.

Cypress Gate’s accounts were frozen.

Orchid Meridian’s remaining U.S.-reachable assets were restrained.

Emma looked at Ryan.

“What about Stage 18?”

“The court appointed a temporary independent fiduciary over disputed Blake Horizon interests.”

“Meaning Mom loses control.”

“For now.”

“And Julian?”

“His ownership interest in Cypress Gate is subject to forfeiture.”

Emma nodded.

No celebration came.

Ryan understood.

He changed the subject.

“My father’s role is being independently reviewed.”

Emma looked at him.

“Arthur didn’t know about the murder.”

“No evidence says he did.”

“But he knew about Julian’s financial misconduct.”

“Yes.”

“And buried it.”

“Yes.”

Ryan’s voice lowered.

“Crownlight will disclose that.”

“What happens to you?”

“The board offered reinstatement.”

Emma raised an eyebrow.

“You don’t sound happy.”

“I accepted on conditions.”

“What conditions?”

“Independent compliance committee. Whistleblower protection outside executive control. Archive access preserved. No family veto.”

Emma studied him.

“You’re giving away power.”

“I’m trying to make it harder for the next person to abuse.”

That answer mattered.

A month later, George called Emma.

“I found something Mina restored.”

“What?”

“The first seventeen seconds of Daniel’s reel.”

Emma froze.

They had focused on the confrontation.

Nobody had expected the beginning to matter.

George’s voice softened.

“Your father was alone.”

May you like

“And?”

“He talked to the camera.”
