Chapter 9 - Ryan’s Family Had Buried the First Warning

Arthur Cole had been dead for four years.

But his handwriting remained aggressive.

Ryan spread his father’s internal memos across a conference table.

One dated January 2019 referenced “irregular transfers involving J.C., V.B., and offshore distribution channels.”

Another directed Crownlight’s lawyers to negotiate Julian Cole’s departure “without unnecessary regulatory escalation.”

Emma stared.

“Your father knew Julian was stealing.”

Ryan said nothing.

“Say it.”

“Yes.”

“And he didn’t report him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Crownlight was refinancing two billion dollars in debt.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means every rich family in this story has the same excuse.”

He stiffened.

“Careful.”

“Why?”

“Because I am not my father.”

“No. You just own everything he protected.”

Ryan stood.

“You think I don’t know that?”

The anger surprised her.

He continued.

“I spent fifteen years believing Julian was removed because he embarrassed the family with bad investments. I did not know my father suspected fraud.”

“But he hid it.”

“Yes.”

“And the studio benefited.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at him.

“So maybe my mother was right.”

“About what?”

“That the Coles destroyed Dad too.”

Ryan absorbed the blow.

Then nodded.

“Maybe.”

His willingness to say it disarmed her.

Susan found something worse in Arthur’s files.

A 2018 email from Daniel Blake.

Subject:

FORMAL NOTICE — RELATED-PARTY FRAUD AND STAGE 18 COERCION

Daniel had sent it to Arthur Cole at 6:42 p.m. on the day he died.

Ryan read the first paragraph aloud.

“Arthur, I have confirmed that Julian and Vanessa have diverted Blake Horizon funds through Orchid Meridian and are using those funds to finance an undisclosed interest in Cypress Gate.”

Emma stopped breathing.

Her father had named Vanessa.

Directly.

The email continued.

Daniel wrote that signatures attributed to Emma were unauthorized.

He promised to contact federal authorities the next morning.

Arthur replied thirty-seven minutes later.

Do not involve regulators tonight. We can resolve internally. Meet me tomorrow at nine.

Daniel died before nine.

Ryan sat down slowly.

“My father delayed him.”

Emma stared.

“He told Dad to wait.”

“Yes.”

“If Dad had gone that night—”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You’re right.”

Silence settled.

Arthur had not killed Daniel.

But his instinct to contain scandal had cost time.

Again, power had protected itself before it protected truth.

The repaired film produced another clue.

Mina Shah reconstructed forty seconds after Vanessa entered.

Daniel held up the Stage 18 trust.

“You don’t get this land.”

Vanessa said:

“I’m your wife.”

Daniel answered:

“And Emma is our daughter.”

Vanessa’s face on film tightened.

Daniel continued.

“She gets the voting interest at thirty.”

Julian said:

“That trust can be amended.”

“Not by you.”

“By Vanessa.”

“Not after tonight.”

Daniel reached toward a legal pad.

“I’m revoking every proxy she has.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You would leave me with nothing.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m leaving you what is yours.”

The cruelty in his tone was real.

Emma heard it.

Her father was angry.

Punishing.

Human.

Vanessa whispered:

“You always used money to make people behave.”

Daniel replied:

“And Julian uses fear.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Neither parent emerged clean.

That mattered.

Then the footage jumped.

When it returned, Daniel had the whiskey glass in his hand.

His movements were slower.

He rubbed his forehead.

Vanessa looked toward Julian.

“What did you give him?”

The room watching the footage went silent.

Julian answered:

“Something to calm him down.”

Vanessa whispered:

“How much?”

The film snapped.

White light.

Emma’s heart hammered.

Mina shut off the projector.

“That’s where the missing cut begins.”

The section someone had removed before the premiere started at precisely the moment Vanessa asked how much drug Daniel had received.

George stared at the blank screen.

“I know who cut it.”

Everyone turned.

“You?” Emma asked.

May you like

George’s face collapsed.

“Yes.”
