Chapter 12 - What Daniel Left Behind the Western Wall

Police reached Stage 18 before Emma.

Vanessa was not there.

Her car was.

The driver’s door remained unlocked.

On the passenger seat lay the flat archival envelope.

Empty.

Emma arrived with Claire and Ryan under instructions to remain outside the police perimeter.

“This is theater,” Ryan said.

“What?”

“Vanessa wanted us to find the envelope.”

Emma stared at the dark soundstage.

“Why?”

“Because the film is somewhere else.”

Detective Ortiz emerged carrying another item.

A black legal folder.

“We found this inside the vehicle.”

Inside were copies of documents.

Not originals.

One was Daniel’s trust.

Another was the Cypress Gate option.

A third was a letter Daniel had drafted to the FBI.

It summarized Orchid Meridian transfers and named Vanessa and Julian.

Emma read her father’s words:

My wife may not understand the full scope of Julian Cole’s conduct, but she has knowingly approved transactions I believe are fraudulent.

Emma paused.

Daniel had not completely condemned Vanessa.

Not then.

He believed she might not know everything.

That mattered.

The final page referenced:

The Stage 18 control certificate stored with production negative B-19.

Ryan frowned.

“Production negative?”

George, who had been allowed to join them later, understood instantly.

“Daniel hid documents inside film cans.”

Police searched the Stage 18 archive.

Production negative B-19 belonged to a forgotten 1996 crime film Daniel had produced.

The can contained no movie.

Inside was a notarized certificate dated March 1, 2018.

Daniel had irrevocably restricted Stage 18 from being transferred to any entity in which Vanessa, Julian, or their affiliates held an undisclosed beneficial interest.

The restriction had been executed and delivered to the partnership’s escrow counsel.

But never recorded publicly.

Susan Park verified the escrow receipt.

“It’s valid.”

Emma stared.

“What does it do?”

“If Cypress Gate was secretly controlled by Julian or Vanessa, the option may be void.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Potentially entirely.”

Ninety-six million dollars of leverage disappeared with one document.

Emma felt her father in the room again.

Not as a victim.

As a man fighting.

Then George noticed something inside the B-19 can.

A smaller envelope.

Film leader.

Only six frames.

Each carried handwritten numbers.

George held them toward the light.

“They match my old frame-count notes.”

“What does that mean?” Emma asked.

“The missing eighty-two seconds weren’t random.”

George arranged the numbers.

“They contain three marked sections.”

One at twelve minutes fourteen seconds.

One at twelve minutes fifty-one.

One at thirteen minutes twenty.

“Why mark them?”

“Daniel wanted me to know where the important moments were.”

Emma looked at Ortiz.

“We need Vanessa’s strip.”

Ortiz nodded.

“We also need Vanessa.”

They found her three hours later.

At Samuel Price’s office.

She surrendered voluntarily.

No arrest warrant existed yet.

She declined substantive questioning.

Her attorney produced the missing film strip.

Vanessa had left it in Price’s safe before driving to Stage 18.

Why?

Nobody knew.

The strip was immediately transferred to evidence custody and then to Mina Shah for supervised restoration.

The process took fourteen hours.

Emma did not sleep.

At six the next morning, they assembled in a secure screening room.

Vanessa refused to attend.

Julian’s attorney did.

So did a deputy district attorney.

Mina threaded the repaired section through a preservation scanner rather than a projector.

The image appeared.

Daniel was already impaired.

He gripped the desk.

Vanessa stared at Julian.

“What did you give him?”

Julian answered:

“Enough to slow him down.”

“You said you would scare him.”

“I said I would solve the problem.”

Daniel tried to stand.

“You two are finished.”

Julian pushed the Cypress agreement toward him.

“Sign.”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“No.”

Julian leaned close.

“Then Emma’s signatures go to the auditors.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“She didn’t sign anything.”

“Can you prove it before the scandal destroys her?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Leave Emma out of this.”

Julian turned toward her.

“You put her in it when you used her proxy.”

Emma felt physically ill.

Her mother had known.

The image jumped.

At the second marked frame, Daniel stumbled toward the phone.

Vanessa reached him first.

She pulled the phone away.

“Daniel, stop.”

“I’m calling the police.”

“You’re drugged.”

“By your boyfriend.”

Vanessa looked at Julian.

Fear appeared on her face.

Real fear.

At the third marked section, Daniel collapsed into his chair.

Julian said:

“We move him.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Where?”

Julian looked directly toward the camera without seeming to see it.

“To his car.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“No.”

“He dies drunk on Mulholland, everyone understands the story.”

Emma stopped breathing.

On screen Vanessa whispered:

“That wasn’t the deal.”

Julian answered:

“It is now.”

The film ended.

Nobody moved.

Emma looked at Detective Ortiz.

“Was my mother part of the murder?”

Ortiz answered carefully.

May you like

“That depends on what she did next.”

And somewhere, Emma realized, Vanessa knew the answer.
