Chapter 13 - The Petition

Vanessa filed the petition before police could arrest her.
Her lawyers claimed the draft found in her office was legitimate estate planning.
They argued Daniel was emotionally unstable, financially compromised, and involved in an inappropriate relationship with Noah’s former nanny.
They requested temporary removal of Daniel as co-trustee.
Rebecca read the filing twice.
“She’s turning the investigation into evidence of your instability.”
Daniel paced.
“She tried to kill Noah.”
“Not proven in court.”
“Owen saw her.”
“Her lawyers will say Owen asked for money.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
She lowered her eyes.
Her mistake had become ammunition again.
The emergency hearing took place in Rhode Island Family Court because Noah’s primary residence and trust administration were located there.
Vanessa entered through the front doors wearing navy blue.
No green.
Never green anymore.
Daniel sat beside Rebecca.
Elena waited in the hall as a potential witness.
Vanessa’s attorney portrayed Daniel as a reckless billionaire who had failed to secure his child aboard a yacht, assaulted an employee in front of witnesses, approved millions in questionable transactions and concealed an intimate relationship with that same employee.
Daniel wanted to stand and shout.
Rebecca kept one hand on his sleeve.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa’s lawyer displayed the photograph of Daniel slapping Elena.
Someone had captured the exact moment.
Daniel’s face twisted with rage.
Elena recoiling.
Noah between them.
The judge stared.
Daniel felt sick.
This was the detail Vanessa understood better than anyone.
A lie did not have to be complete.
It only needed enough truth around it.
Daniel had struck Elena.
Daniel had signed approvals.
Daniel had betrayed Claire.
Daniel had ignored warnings.
Vanessa built her defense inside his mistakes.
When Daniel testified, Vanessa’s lawyer asked, “Did you strike Ms. Morales while she held your six-month-old son?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know whether she had pushed Noah at that moment?”
“No.”
“So you assaulted her without knowing the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Yet you ask this court to believe your judgment should control a trust worth approximately two hundred eighty million dollars?”
Daniel looked toward the judge.
“No.”
The attorney blinked.
Daniel continued.
“I ask the court to believe my son should be protected from Vanessa Vale. If that means removing me too, do it.”
Rebecca looked at him sharply.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Daniel went on.
“I failed my wife. I failed Elena. I nearly failed Noah because I reacted from fear instead of evidence. But none of that changes what Vanessa did.”
The hearing ended after four hours.
The judge refused to appoint Vanessa as temporary trustee.
But she also suspended Daniel’s discretionary trust authority pending criminal investigation and appointed Rebecca as sole interim trustee.
It was a defeat.
And a victory.
Vanessa had not gained Noah’s shares.
Daniel had lost control of them.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted.
Vanessa walked past Daniel.
“You just gave away your company.”
Daniel said quietly, “To keep it from you.”
She stopped.
“You think this is about money?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa turned.
Her face was pale with anger.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“I spent four years making you successful.”
“Claire spent twelve.”
“I sat in rooms she couldn’t survive.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No. She survived them. She just hated what they turned us into.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You loved me when I was useful.”
“I wanted you when I was weak.”
The words hit.
Vanessa slapped him.
Cameras exploded with flashes.
Daniel did not move.
For one second Vanessa seemed to realize what she had done.
Then she walked away.
Elena had watched from the courthouse steps.
Later she found Daniel alone in the underground parking garage.
“You okay?”
He laughed once.
“Apparently I’m collecting slaps now.”
Elena did not smile.
He looked at her.
“I deserved yours more.”
“I didn’t slap you.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then Elena said, “You did the right thing in there.”
“I gave Rebecca control of two hundred eighty million dollars.”
“She already had more judgment than both of us.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
Then his phone rang.
Detective Brooks.
“We have a problem.”
Vanessa’s personal laptop had disappeared before police executed the warrant.
So had the original green gown.
And Marcus Bell was missing.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Missing how?”
“His apartment is empty.”
“Do you think Vanessa—”
“I think Marcus is scared.”
Then Brooks added, “There’s more.”
Owen had recanted.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What?”
“He says he was mistaken. Says the rain distorted what he saw.”
Elena whispered, “No.”
Brooks continued.
“He received ninety thousand dollars this morning through an offshore account.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
May you like
The case was collapsing.
And Vanessa had just bought their only eyewitness.
