Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Knife

Monday morning, Daniel walked into Mercer Marine Technologies headquarters knowing half the room might already be against him.

Vanessa sat at the far end of the board table.

She wore white.

No green gown.

No visible fear.

Grant Vale sat beside her.

He was forty-four, polished, broad-shouldered and smiling in the way men smiled when they believed the outcome had already been purchased.

Daniel dropped the emergency consent on the table.

“Who sent this to Elena?”

Vanessa blinked.

“Elena?”

Grant leaned back.

“You’re communicating with the woman under investigation for trying to kill your child?”

“She saved my son.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Is that what you believe now?”

“I believe forty-seven seconds of evidence disappeared using your login.”

Grant laughed.

“That’s your proof?”

Daniel looked at him.

“No. Eleven-point-eight million dollars paid to your firm is becoming more interesting.”

The room went still.

Grant’s smile vanished.

Board chair Martin Hale cleared his throat.

“Daniel, this meeting concerns leadership stability.”

“No. This meeting concerns a coordinated attempt to remove me before an audit begins.”

Vanessa folded her hands.

“You are grieving.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You tried that sentence on Claire too.”

A flicker of anger crossed Vanessa’s face.

Martin intervened.

“We have media outside, investors calling, and police investigating an attempted homicide aboard a company-associated yacht.”

“A privately owned yacht.”

“Perception does not care.”

Vanessa slid a folder forward.

“We’re proposing temporary administrative leave.”

Daniel did not open it.

“Who becomes acting CEO?”

Grant answered.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel laughed once.

“Of course.”

At the bank, Elena and Rebecca opened Claire’s safe-deposit box.

Inside were three objects.

A sealed envelope.

A black flash drive.

And a small digital voice recorder.

Rebecca stared.

“Claire was thorough.”

Elena picked up the envelope.

For Elena and Rebecca only, if Noah is endangered.

Elena’s hands trembled.

She opened it.

Claire’s handwriting filled two pages.

Rebecca read over her shoulder.

Elena—

If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid, and I am sorry.

Vanessa has been moving money through Grant’s companies. Daniel refuses to see it because admitting Vanessa’s manipulation would require him to admit what she has become to him.

I have copied invoices, messages, access logs, and board communications.

Do not accuse them without evidence.

Most importantly, do not let Daniel destroy himself out of guilt. He makes terrible decisions when frightened.

Elena stopped.

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“Claire knew him.”

Rebecca continued reading.

There was one final paragraph.

The yacht security network has a satellite failover archive. Marcus Bell knows about it. He also knows I installed it because someone entered my study while I was pregnant.

Rebecca looked up.

“Marcus.”

Elena took out her phone.

“We need Daniel.”

At the board meeting, Vanessa was speaking.

“Daniel’s personal conduct has become a corporate risk.”

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message from Elena.

CLAIRE NAMED MARCUS. YACHT HAS SATELLITE BACKUP.

Daniel stood.

Vanessa stopped.

“Where are you going?”

“To find forty-seven seconds.”

Grant’s expression changed.

Daniel saw it.

That was enough.

“You knew,” Daniel said.

Grant said nothing.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“So did you.”

Vanessa stood.

“You are not leaving this room.”

Daniel smiled without warmth.

“Watch me.”

Martin raised a hand.

“If you leave before the vote—”

“Vote.”

Daniel walked toward the door.

“Take the title. Take the office. Take my parking space.”

Vanessa stared after him.

Daniel turned once.

“But if you touched my son, I will spend every dollar I have proving it.”

The doors closed behind him.

Twenty minutes later, the board voted Daniel Mercer onto temporary leave.

Vanessa Vale became acting CEO.

Her first executive order was issued at 10:14 a.m.

And at 10:19, Marcus remotely disconnected Aurora’s satellite archive.
