Chapter 14 - The Arrest

The police came for Elena at dawn.
Daniel heard the knock from the nursery.
By the time he reached the foyer, two detectives were standing beside Brooks.
Elena had arrived the previous night because Rebecca believed she was safer at the Mercer estate than alone.
Brooks looked miserable.
“Elena Morales, we have a warrant.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“For what?”
Brooks handed Rebecca the document.
Attempted murder.
Evidence tampering.
Witness bribery.
Elena stared.
“This is insane.”
Brooks said, “We received new footage.”
Daniel’s face drained.
“What footage?”
At the station they showed him.
A video from Aurora.
Rear deck.
Seconds before Noah went overboard.
Elena appeared beside the stroller.
She reached toward it.
The image skipped.
Then the stroller disappeared.
Daniel stared.
“No.”
Vanessa’s attorney had delivered the file to police, claiming it had been recovered from a “private event backup.”
Brooks did not trust it.
But a judge had found probable cause when combined with the photographs of Elena meeting Owen.
Elena sat across the interview table.
“You know that’s fake.”
Brooks said, “I believe it may be manipulated.”
“May be?”
“I need forensic proof.”
Daniel paced outside.
Rebecca caught his arm.
“Stop.”
“She saved him.”
“I know.”
“I hit her, fired her, let her get destroyed publicly, and now she’s being arrested because of people I brought into our lives.”
Rebecca looked directly at him.
“Then help her intelligently.”
He stopped.
Inside the interview room, Elena stared at the forged footage.
Then she noticed something.
“Play it again.”
Brooks did.
“Stop.”
The image froze.
Elena pointed to herself.
“My uniform.”
“What?”
“The sleeve.”
The gray fabric was dry.
Brooks frowned.
“This is before you jumped.”
“No. Look at my cuff.”
A dark patch appeared near the wrist.
Elena remembered spilling champagne ten minutes earlier while clearing a tray.
“It should be wet there.”
Brooks looked closer.
The stain was missing.
“This footage was assembled from an earlier segment.”
Brooks called for forensic analysis.
But the warrant remained valid.
Elena was booked.
Daniel watched through glass as an officer removed her belt and shoelaces.
Something in him broke.
Elena looked back.
For once, neither of them had words.
She spent fourteen hours in a holding cell.
During those hours Vanessa held a press conference.
“My heart is broken,” she said before cameras.
“I loved Noah as my own. I trusted Elena. I hope Daniel can begin healing now that the truth is emerging.”
Grant watched from backstage.
“You’re enjoying this.”
Vanessa kept smiling.
“No.”
“You always touch your ring when you lie.”
She looked down.
Her fingers were on her engagement ring.
Daniel had not asked for it back.
Not yet.
Grant lowered his voice.
“We close the acquisition Friday.”
“Rebecca controls Noah’s shares.”
“We don’t need them anymore.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“What did you do?”
Grant smiled.
“Found another lender.”
“Using what collateral?”
“Mercer Marine intellectual property.”
Vanessa went still.
“You don’t control it.”
“As acting CEO, you do.”
“That crosses the line.”
Grant laughed.
“You pushed a baby into the ocean.”
Vanessa’s face froze.
Grant leaned closer.
“Don’t develop ethics now.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid of her own brother.
Elena was released that evening after forensic analysts found obvious frame duplication in the video.
The criminal charges were not immediately dismissed, but prosecutors asked the court to release her without bond.
Daniel waited outside.
Elena walked past him.
“Elena.”
She stopped.
He approached slowly.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked exhausted.
“For which part?”
“All of it.”
“That’s too much for one apology.”
“I know.”
She started walking.
Daniel followed.
“Where are you going?”
“I don’t know.”
“You can stay at the house.”
“No.”
“You’ll be safer.”
“I said no.”
Daniel stopped.
Elena turned.
“You keep making protection sound like ownership.”
The sentence hit him hard.
“I’m not Claire. I’m not Noah. I’m not your employee anymore. You don’t get to decide where I go because you’re afraid.”
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.”
She looked surprised.
“I hate when you do that.”
“What?”
“Become reasonable after I’ve prepared to fight.”
A tired smile almost appeared.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Priya.
Her voice was urgent.
“I found the source of the fake video.”
“Where?”
“Marcus Bell’s laptop.”
Daniel’s hope died.
“So Marcus framed Elena.”
“No.”
Priya paused.
“The file was created yesterday.”
“Marcus has been missing for three days.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Someone has his laptop.”
Priya continued.
“And I found a hidden webcam capture from the moment the file was rendered.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Who?”
Priya sent the still image.
Daniel opened it.
Grant Vale sat in front of Marcus’s computer.
Behind him stood Vanessa.
But Vanessa was not looking at the screen.
She was looking directly at Grant.
May you like
And her expression was not cooperation.
It was fear.
