Chapter 16 - Back to Aurora

By Friday afternoon, Aurora sat at the private marina beneath a low gray sky.

The same yacht.

The same rear deck.

The same steel rail over black water.

Daniel stared at it from inside an unmarked police vehicle.

Detective Brooks sat beside him.

“You are not a cop.”

“I’m aware.”

“You do not improvise.”

“I’ll try.”

“That answer concerns me.”

Rebecca sat in front.

Elena had refused to stay behind.

Brooks had objected.

Elena had answered, “They’re using evidence against me. I’m part of this whether I like it or not.”

Now she sat in another vehicle with Priya, monitoring audio.

Daniel wore a recording device beneath his shirt.

Police had no warrant to storm the yacht merely because Grant invited Daniel to negotiate.

They needed evidence of Marcus’s unlawful confinement or an immediate threat.

Grant had been careful.

Vanessa had not responded to police requests for interview.

Her attorney claimed she was ill.

At 3:56 p.m., Daniel boarded Aurora.

Captain Harrow was absent.

Grant had replaced the crew with private contractors.

Vanessa stood in the salon.

She wore black.

Daniel stopped.

“No green?”

Her expression tightened.

“Don’t.”

Grant entered behind her.

“Let’s keep this professional.”

Daniel laughed.

“Professional.”

Grant placed a leather folder on the table.

Claire’s original trust amendment.

Rebecca whispered through Daniel’s concealed earpiece.

“That’s it.”

Daniel sat.

“Marcus.”

Grant smiled.

“Later.”

“Patents.”

“Already pledged.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Grant continued.

“You cooperate publicly. Say the Vale payments were legitimate strategic fees. Say Elena acted independently. Say grief distorted your judgment.”

Vanessa looked at him.

Daniel noticed.

“You didn’t know about this part.”

“Stop,” Grant said.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“He’s sacrificing you.”

“Daniel.”

“He lets you take the Noah charge. Marcus takes the cybercrime. I take the financial fraud.”

Grant’s smile vanished.

Daniel continued.

“And Grant keeps the acquisition.”

Vanessa stared at her brother.

“You said we were leaving together.”

Grant’s face hardened.

“We’re not discussing this.”

Daniel almost pitied her.

Almost.

Vanessa whispered, “You said Singapore.”

Grant leaned toward her.

“I said whatever you needed to hear.”

The room changed.

Daniel recognized betrayal when he saw it.

Vanessa’s eyes filled, not with sadness, but fury.

“You used me.”

Grant laughed.

“You were using Daniel.”

“That was different.”

“No. You just liked your version better.”

Daniel said quietly, “Where is Marcus?”

Vanessa looked at Grant.

Then at Daniel.

“He’s below.”

Grant snapped, “Shut up.”

Brooks’s voice came through Daniel’s earpiece.

“That’s enough. We’re moving.”

Grant noticed Daniel’s expression.

He grabbed Daniel’s shirt.

Found the wire.

Everything exploded.

Grant ripped it free.

“Police?”

Vanessa stepped backward.

Daniel shoved Grant away.

From below deck came pounding.

“Help!”

Marcus.

Grant ran toward the security room.

Daniel followed.

Vanessa caught Daniel’s arm.

“He’s going to erase the server.”

“You already erased it.”

“Not the cache key.”

Daniel froze.

“What cache key?”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“The satellite archive needs the local encryption certificate.”

“Where is it?”

“Security rack.”

Grant disappeared down the stairs.

Elena heard everything through Priya’s monitor before the wire died.

She opened the car door.

Priya grabbed her.

“Police are moving.”

“Grant’s destroying the evidence.”

“That is not your job.”

Elena looked toward the yacht.

Once before, she had waited for no one.

She ran.

On Aurora, Daniel reached the lower security room.

Grant had opened the server cabinet.

Marcus was tied to a chair in the adjoining storage area.

Daniel moved toward him.

Grant produced a metal boat hook.

“Stop.”

Daniel froze.

Grant pointed the hook toward the exposed server drives.

“You destroyed enough already,” Daniel said.

Grant laughed.

“I created value.”

“You stole twenty-three million dollars.”

“From a company worth billions.”

“That makes it better?”

“It makes it efficient.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Grant looked toward Vanessa.

“You idiot.”

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

“You’re not leaving me with this.”

Grant stepped toward her.

“You pushed the child.”

“You told me the audit would destroy us.”

“I told you to solve a problem.”

Daniel stared.

Brooks’s officers were approaching.

Grant heard them.

He swung the boat hook into the server rack.

Metal shattered.

Vanessa screamed.

Daniel lunged.

Grant struck him across the shoulder.

Daniel fell.

Elena entered the lower corridor at that exact moment.

She saw Daniel on the floor.

Grant raised the hook again.

“Stop!”

Everyone turned.

Grant smiled.

“The nanny.”

Elena looked at Marcus.

Then at the broken server.

Then at the red status light still blinking above the rack.

Twice.

Pause.

Twice.

She smiled.

Grant frowned.

“What?”

Elena said four words.

May you like

Exactly as she had on the deck.

“Check the camera.”
