Chapter 12 - The Sale Nobody Was Supposed to See

Priya received the decisive Kestrel emails through the independent forensic review.

Nathan had deleted them.

Mercer Harbor's backup system had not.

The first message was from Nathan to Kestrel’s managing director.

Daniel will not approve at 118. Need control event first.

The reply:

Can you deliver trust separation?

Nathan:

Domestic process underway.

Daniel read the sentence several times.

Domestic process.

That was what Nathan called the destruction of his family.

Another email contained Vanessa’s name.

VMC consulting fee conditioned on closing. 1.2M. Keep outside public transaction schedule.

Laura Chen read it in a secure meeting.

Her face became hard.

“This should have been disclosed to the board.”

“Yes,” Priya said.

“Was it?”

“No.”

Laura looked toward Nathan’s empty chair.

“He told us Kestrel had no executive side arrangements.”

Priya opened another document.

The buyer’s internal valuation placed Mercer Harbor between $154 million and $169 million.

Kestrel had knowingly offered $118 million because Nathan promised a distressed-control scenario.

The low sale would transfer tens of millions of dollars from existing shareholders to the buyer.

Noah’s trust alone would lose more than twelve million dollars compared with the low end of Kestrel’s own valuation.

Daniel said quietly, “Emily knew.”

Laura looked at him.

“She suspected.”

“She wrote about executive side deals.”

Laura closed the document.

“I’m calling an emergency board session.”

Leah intervened.

“Before you do, law enforcement needs copies. If Nathan knows exactly what has been recovered, evidence may disappear.”

Laura agreed.

For the first time, Daniel felt power shift.

Not back to him.

Toward the facts.

But Vanessa still had one move.

Her new attorney requested that CPS examine whether Daniel’s old recording constituted emotional abuse.

The agency implemented a temporary safety plan while the evaluation continued.

Daniel could see Noah.

But visits had to occur at Mia’s home.

No overnight stays.

Daniel hated it.

Noah hated it more.

“You're my dad.”

“I know.”

“Then why can't I stay with you?”

“Because adults are checking some things.”

“Vanessa made it up.”

“Some of it.”

Noah became angry.

“What do you mean some?”

Daniel sat across from him.

“I yelled at you that day.”

“Because I broke the perfume.”

“I yelled too much.”

Noah shrugged.

“So?”

“So being falsely accused doesn't mean I was perfect.”

Noah stared.

Daniel continued.

“I'm not going to ask you to lie for me the way Vanessa asked you to lie against me.”

Noah became quiet.

That night he asked Daniel something before leaving.

“Do you still love Vanessa?”

Daniel had not expected it.

“No.”

“Did you before?”

“Yes.”

“More than me?”

Daniel's eyes filled immediately.

“No.”

Noah looked down.

“It felt like it.”

Daniel could not defend himself.

That was the punishment truth required.

“It shouldn't have.”

Noah hugged him anyway.

Afterward Daniel sat alone in his rental apartment.

A message from an unknown number arrived.

Two million dollars.

He stared.

Another.

Sign a confidential marital settlement. I withdraw every allegation and tell the board Nathan deceived me.

Vanessa.

Leah told him not to answer.

Daniel wanted to.

He wanted to type:

Go to hell.

Instead he photographed the messages.

Minutes later another arrived.

You can save your son, your company, and your reputation for less than you spend on one house.

Daniel forwarded everything to Leah.

The next message changed the tone.

If you refuse, I give investigators the rest of your recordings.

Then:

You know what you sound like when you're angry.

Daniel did know.

And Vanessa knew something else.

Even false conspiracies were strongest when built around real flaws.

He called Leah.

“What if I pay?”

“No.”

“What if it ends this?”

“It won't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because people who sell silence sell it more than once.”

Daniel stared into the dark apartment.

“What do we do?”

“We preserve the extortion demand.”

“Is it extortion?”

“Potentially. Let prosecutors decide.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I'm learning to let other people do their jobs.”

“Good.”

Then Priya called.

Her voice was urgent.

“The Kestrel closing documents were accessed tonight.”

“By whom?”

“Nathan.”

Daniel stood.

“He’s moving.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Priya paused.

“He scheduled a special board vote for Friday.”

It was Wednesday night.

May you like

Nathan had forty-eight hours to save the conspiracy.

So did Daniel.
