Chapter 16 - Tomorrow, Every Lie Enters the Same Room

Police obtained a warrant for Vanessa’s residence that afternoon.

Because the marital house belonged to Daniel but remained occupied by Vanessa under temporary court orders, officers searched only the areas covered by the warrant.

They found no hardware token.

But they found a locked fireproof box.

Inside:

three burner phones,

VMC Studio bank records,

printed Kestrel term sheets,

and photographs of Daniel’s safe contents.

No token.

Vanessa was brought in for questioning.

She asked for a lawyer.

Interview ended.

Nathan refused an interview entirely.

Mercer Harbor’s bank blocked the $18 million transfer.

Nathan responded by accusing Daniel of improperly interfering with company operations.

Daniel almost admired the audacity.

Almost.

Then IT found something worse.

A draft board memorandum written by Nathan.

If Daniel is implicated in the Vela authorizations, seek immediate forfeiture of management authority and referral for prosecution.

Nathan intended to turn stolen credentials into a criminal case against Daniel.

At the same time, Vanessa’s attorneys notified the family court that she planned to testify Friday that Daniel had once struck Noah.

A new allegation.

Completely false.

The hearing was scheduled for 8:30 Friday morning.

The board reconvened at eleven.

Kestrel’s injunction hearing continued at two.

Three battles.

One day.

Leah spread the schedule across Daniel’s table.

“This is coordinated.”

Daniel nodded.

“They want the child-abuse allegation alive before the board vote.”

“If the court made a finding—”

“The trust block changes hands.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared toward the window.

“Then we stop fighting them separately.”

Priya looked up.

“What do you mean?”

“Every case has the same evidence.”

Vanessa’s money.

Nathan’s fraud.

The trust clause.

The coached affidavit.

The Kestrel sale.

The stolen token.

“They've survived because each room only sees part of the story.”

Leah understood.

“We need cross-admissible authenticated evidence and witnesses.”

“Rosa.”

“Yes.”

“Noah’s advocacy interview.”

“Potentially through the interviewer. We do not drag Noah into three proceedings.”

“Good.”

“Bank records.”

“Priya.”

“Corporate archives.”

“Laura.”

Daniel nodded.

“And the kitchen camera.”

Leah looked at him.

“All of it.”

Including Daniel slapping Vanessa.

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

“All of it.”

He would not edit himself out of the truth.

Thursday night, Noah could not sleep.

Daniel found him sitting on the couch.

“Bad dream?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Are we losing?”

Daniel sat beside him.

“What does losing mean?”

“Vanessa comes back.”

“No.”

“Nathan takes Mom’s company.”

“We're trying to stop that.”

“You go to jail.”

Daniel was quiet.

“That isn't likely, but I still have to answer for hitting Vanessa.”

Noah leaned against him.

“Why don't you just say sorry and make it disappear?”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Sometimes sorry changes a person. It doesn't always change a consequence.”

Noah looked at the floor.

“I'm still mad you didn't believe me.”

“I know.”

“But I don't want you to go away.”

Daniel placed an arm around him.

“I’m not planning to.”

Noah nodded.

Then whispered, “Vanessa kept the black thing in her makeup bag.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“The button thing.”

“The token?”

Noah nodded.

“She kept it in a little makeup bag with gold stars.”

“When did you see it?”

“The night you came home.”

“Before dinner?”

“Yes.”

“Where was the bag?”

“In her big suitcase.”

Daniel called Leah immediately.

The search warrant had covered financial records and electronic devices, not every personal container unrelated to those categories.

Police had photographed a large suitcase in Vanessa’s dressing room.

They had not seized the makeup pouch.

Leah contacted Detective Delgado.

An amended warrant request went to a judge.

At 12:41 a.m., officers returned.

At 1:26, Delgado called.

“We found it.”

Daniel stood in the dark living room.

“The token?”

“Black key fob. Serial number matches the company record.”

“Where?”

“Gold-star makeup bag.”

Noah had remembered.

Delgado continued.

“And there’s something else.”

“What?”

“A handwritten note wrapped around it.”

Daniel held his breath.

“What does it say?”

Delgado read.

Friday. Judge first. Board second. Kestrel after lunch. Once trust moves, Daniel is finished.

The handwriting was Nathan's.

Friday was no longer a series of hearings.

It was the day the conspiracy had been built to reach.

Daniel looked at Leah.

“No more private deals.”

“No.”

“No more edited clips.”

“No.”

“No more chasing Nathan.”

Leah waited.

May you like

Daniel looked toward Noah's bedroom.

“Tomorrow, we put every lie in the same room.”
