Chapter 15 - The Affidavit in the Trash

At seven Wednesday morning, Rosa walked into Leah’s office carrying a grocery bag.

Inside was the original affidavit draft.

“I found it behind my washing machine.”

Leah put on gloves.

“You kept this for two years?”

“I took papers from Vanessa’s trash.”

“Why?”

Rosa looked ashamed.

“Because I thought if she ever hurt Noah badly, I needed proof.”

Daniel stood across the room.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Rosa met his eyes.

“Would you have believed me?”

Daniel had no answer.

She looked toward the floor.

“I heard you defend her.”

He swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Rosa placed another item on the table.

A small digital voice recorder.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?”

“Vanessa gave it to me once.”

“Why?”

“She wanted me to put it in Noah’s room.”

Mia inhaled sharply.

Rosa continued.

“She said she needed proof that he talked about hurting her.”

“Did you do it?”

“No.”

“What did you do?”

“I turned it on and put it in my pocket.”

Leah leaned forward.

“You recorded Vanessa asking you to secretly record Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still have that recording?”

Rosa nodded.

The audio was short.

Vanessa’s voice was unmistakable.

If Noah says Daniel hits him, I need it recorded.

Rosa:

But he never said that.

Vanessa:

Then ask him the right questions. Children follow the question.

Rosa:

I don't want to.

Vanessa:

Your sister still has immigration issues, doesn't she?

Silence.

Then Vanessa:

Everyone has something they want protected.

Daniel shut his eyes.

Leah did not celebrate.

“This strengthens witness intimidation and coercion. It also shows a pattern of manufacturing evidence.”

Priya arrived with the document examiner.

Nathan’s handwritten notes on the affidavit matched authenticated samples with high confidence.

At 8:40 a.m., Leah filed the evidence electronically with the court and requested immediate relief.

At 8:55, Laura called.

“The board meeting is starting.”

Daniel opened the secure feed.

Nathan sat at the head of the table.

Daniel’s chair.

“Before we vote,” Nathan said, “I need the board to understand the risk of delay.”

He presented projections of insolvency.

Priya whispered, “Manipulated.”

Nathan presented lender warnings.

Laura interrupted.

“You caused some of those warnings by announcing layoffs and instability.”

Nathan ignored her.

Then he displayed the Vela approvals bearing Daniel’s credentials.

“This investigation may ultimately show our founder participated in the same misconduct he now blames on others.”

Daniel felt anger rise.

Leah put a hand on his shoulder.

“Not yet.”

At 9:17, Laura introduced the new evidence.

Nathan’s face changed when the affidavit appeared.

“This is fabricated.”

Laura played Rosa’s recording.

Nathan stood.

“This has nothing to do with corporate valuation.”

“It has everything to do with control,” Laura said.

The board fractured into shouting.

Nathan called for the vote anyway.

Four in favor of Kestrel exclusivity.

Three against.

Motion passed.

Daniel swore.

Leah checked her phone.

“The judge issued a temporary standstill.”

“When?”

“Thirty seconds ago.”

She called corporate counsel.

Within minutes Kestrel received notice.

The exclusivity approval could not be implemented pending the hearing.

Nathan had won the vote.

Daniel had frozen the result.

Power reversed again.

Only temporarily.

At the courthouse, Nathan's lawyers argued the board acted within its authority.

Leah argued undisclosed side compensation made the transaction structurally tainted.

The judge refused to approve the sale while allegations of self-dealing remained unresolved.

A preliminary injunction was entered for ten days.

Daniel walked out breathing for what felt like the first time all week.

Then Priya grabbed his arm.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

She showed him an email.

Nathan had scheduled an $18 million transfer from Mercer Harbor’s acquisition reserve into a Kestrel-controlled escrow account.

For 8:00 a.m. the next morning.

“That violates the injunction.”

“If he sends it.”

“Can the bank stop it?”

“We notified them.”

“Then why are you worried?”

“Because the transfer authorization uses two executive credentials.”

“Nathan and who?”

Priya looked at him.

“You.”

Daniel stared.

“My credential is disabled.”

“Your current one is.”

She turned the screen.

The transfer had been authenticated through Daniel’s old hardware-token profile.

The supposedly deactivated token.

Noah’s words returned.

Vanessa used Dad’s black button thing.

Somebody still had it.
