Chapter 12 - The Custody Trap

Bianca’s petition included photographs.

Daniel asleep on a sofa.

Daniel stumbling after back surgery.

Prescription bottles.

Statements from two former household employees claiming he was occasionally disoriented.

A video showed him shouting at Bianca in front of Lily.

The video was real.

Context was absent.

The family court ordered an expedited evaluation.

Daniel was furious.

Peter said, “Do not give her what she wants.”

“She attacked Grace!”

“That is separate.”

“She conspired to send Lily away!”

“Relevant, but still separate.”

“She may have helped kill Caroline!”

“Not charged.”

Daniel hated law’s refusal to arrange itself according to emotional certainty.

So he complied.

Drug testing.

Medical records.

Psychological evaluation.

Temporary supervised transitions between school and home.

Bianca did not receive custody because of the assault evidence and ongoing criminal investigation.

But Daniel still had to prove his fitness.

Lily noticed.

“Why did that lady ask if you drink?”

“Because court wants to make sure I take care of you safely.”

“Bianca lies.”

“Sometimes.”

“Why do they listen?”

“Because courts have to listen before deciding.”

Lily frowned.

“That sounds annoying.”

“It is.”

Grace found Daniel in Caroline’s old music room later.

“You’re doing better.”

“At being accused of things?”

“At not exploding.”

He smiled faintly.

“I’m exhausted.”

Grace sat nearby.

“Caroline would be surprised.”

“That I’m not exploding?”

“That you learned to listen.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t have to make me feel better.”

“I’m not.”

His test results were clean.

Medical review showed properly prescribed postoperative medication.

Then a pharmacist discovered something strange.

One refill Bianca picked up contained tablets from two different manufacturers.

Daniel’s physician had prescribed a stable dose.

A private laboratory tested surviving pills.

Some were twice the prescribed strength.

Daniel stared at the report.

“Could the pharmacy have made a mistake?”

“Yes,” Peter said. “But records show the correct medication left the pharmacy.”

“Meaning pills were switched later.”

“Possibly.”

“By Bianca.”

“Possibly.”

They searched old security footage.

One kitchen camera had captured Bianca opening Daniel’s medication organizer.

Not proof of switching.

But enough to raise questions.

Then Grace brought forward something Daniel had forgotten.

A voicemail from Bianca during his recovery.

Take your nighttime pills before the lawyer comes tomorrow. You’re impossible when you’re in pain.

Timestamp: twenty minutes before Daniel electronically signed the estate-restructuring package.

Peter stared.

“That could matter.”

“How?”

“If Bianca intentionally overmedicated you before obtaining signatures, we challenge capacity and consent.”

Daniel felt another piece lock into place.

Bianca’s schemes depended on his weaknesses.

His willingness to sign quickly.

His pain.

His grief.

His guilt.

She did not create all of them.

She simply learned where to push.

The custody evaluator ultimately recommended Lily remain with Daniel pending investigation.

Bianca’s petition failed.

A power reversal.

But victory lasted three hours.

Detective Kim called.

“Adrian changed his story.”

Daniel stood.

“How?”

“He now says Bianca never instructed him to alter Caroline’s car.”

“What?”

“He says he acted alone.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel did.

Someone had reached Adrian.

Bianca.

Or someone protecting her.

Then Peter received a settlement offer.

Bianca would withdraw all guardianship claims.

She would waive support.

She would relinquish most marital claims against Hale Soundworks.

In exchange, Daniel would sign one document.

Approval for the Aurora transaction.

Daniel looked at the page.

“No.”

Peter said, “Read the number.”

Bianca would walk away with only $4 million.

Far less than she could plausibly claim through divorce litigation.

Too little.

Because the real prize remained elsewhere.

Daniel turned to Lily’s trust counsel.

“If Aurora buys Hale Soundworks, what happens to Reed Heritage?”

The attorney studied the agreements.

Then went pale.

“Hale Soundworks holds an old reciprocal licensing option signed by Caroline.”

“What does that mean?”

“If Aurora owns Hale Soundworks, it could force Reed Heritage into arbitration over catalog rights.”

“For how much?”

“Potentially hundreds of millions.”

Daniel understood.

Bianca did not need Lily’s trust anymore if she could buy the legal weapon already hidden inside his company.

He tore the settlement agreement in half.

Peter sighed.

“That was a copy.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked through the studio window.

“No sale.”

Peter said quietly, “Then Ashcroft can foreclose in eight days.”

May you like

Daniel answered:

“Then I have eight days to prove Bianca owns the lender.”
