Chapter 7 - The Housekeeper They Misjudged

Grace refused Daniel’s offer to relocate her.

“I’m not hiding.”

“Bianca attacked you.”

“And that is why she expects me to be afraid.”

Grace had worked for the family since before Lily was born.

Caroline trusted her.

Daniel realized he had always categorized Grace as loyal staff rather than as a woman who had seen nearly every fracture in the household.

That had been another form of blindness.

“Why didn’t you tell me Caroline was afraid before the crash?”

Grace’s face tightened.

“Because you blamed her.”

“I blamed myself too.”

“No. You blamed her first.”

Daniel looked away.

Grace continued.

“The week before she died, you called her paranoid.”

“I remember.”

“You said she was trying to sabotage the company because she hated your work.”

“I remember.”

“She heard you.”

Daniel swallowed.

Grace’s eyes filled.

“She told me, ‘Daniel will understand when he calms down.’”

He could barely answer.

“He never got the chance.”

“No.”

Grace handed him a sealed envelope.

“I found this taped underneath the drawer where the headphones were.”

It was addressed to Grace.

Inside, Caroline had written:

If something happens to me, protect Lily from anyone who suddenly becomes indispensable to Daniel.

Grace covered her mouth.

“That’s why I stayed.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew Bianca was wrong from the beginning?”

“I distrusted her.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I did.”

Daniel frowned.

“When?”

“Three months before your wedding.”

He remembered.

Grace had told him Bianca asked too many questions about Lily’s routines.

Daniel accused Grace of being unable to accept Caroline’s death.

He threatened to fire her.

Grace had apologized.

Daniel felt shame.

“You should have left.”

“I almost did.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Lily.”

Upstairs, Lily was practicing piano.

The simple notes drifted through the house.

Daniel sat heavily.

“What did Bianca ask?”

“Who picked Lily up from school. Whether you traveled overnight. Who had medical authorization. Whether Caroline’s family visited. Whether Lily had a passport.”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“She was building a map.”

“Yes.”

“And I invited her in.”

Grace said nothing.

That evening Daniel met with Aurora executives.

He did not reveal the full investigation.

He told them he could not close while ownership conflicts existed.

Their CEO, Martin Shaw, looked genuinely confused.

“Bianca told us this morning everything was resolved.”

“She spoke to you?”

“She has for months.”

Daniel’s anger sharpened.

“In what capacity?”

“Your family office representative.”

“I don’t have a family office.”

Martin’s face changed.

He opened correspondence.

Bianca had used the title Managing Director, Hale Family Holdings.

No such entity existed.

But documents attached to her emails contained Daniel’s electronic signature granting her negotiation authority.

Forgery or careless signature?

Daniel no longer knew.

Martin said, “We need to suspend the deal.”

“Do it.”

“Your lender may react.”

“It already has.”

When Daniel returned home, Lily was waiting with her purple headphones.

“Grace says Mom used these when she worked.”

“Yes.”

“Were you and Mom happy?”

Daniel stopped.

“Sometimes.”

“That means no.”

“It means marriage is more complicated.”

Lily rolled her eyes.

“You sound like Grace.”

He smiled faintly.

“We loved each other.”

“Why did you fight?”

“Money. Work. Fear.”

“Bianca?”

“Near the end, yes. Though I didn’t know her yet.”

Lily looked puzzled.

Daniel realized how strange the truth sounded.

Then she asked:

“Did Mom know she was going to die?”

His heart tightened.

“I don’t think so.”

“But she hid recordings.”

“She was scared something might happen.”

Lily took that in.

“What did you do?”

The question was not cruel.

Which made it worse.

“I didn’t believe her enough.”

Lily looked at him for a long time.

Then said:

“Believe Grace now.”

Daniel nodded.

“I do.”

His phone rang.

Detective Rosa Kim.

“We located Leah Monroe.”

Daniel stood.

“She agreed to speak?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Kim’s voice became careful.

“She says she has the original diagnostic report from Caroline’s Range Rover.”

Daniel could barely breathe.

“Does it show tampering?”

“It shows something more specific.”

A pause.

“Someone altered the electronic steering-assist calibration the night before Caroline died.”

Daniel gripped the table.

“And Leah says Adrian ordered the alteration.”

May you like

“Why?”

“She says Bianca told him to.”
