Chapter 19 - The Company Without Daniel

Six months later Hale Soundworks had changed.

Daniel owned thirty-nine percent.

Employees and outside investors owned the rest.

An independent CEO ran operations.

Daniel retained creative oversight of selected projects.

He was home by six most nights.

The first month felt unbearable.

He walked around the house not knowing what to do with himself.

Lily solved that.

“You can help with math.”

“I produce records.”

“You still know division.”

Barely.

Grace laughed from the kitchen.

The civil cases ended more slowly.

Bianca surrendered property and accounts traceable to Ashcroft and the Aurora scheme.

Adrian lost his law license and received a prison sentence.

Julian resigned as chair of Reed Media for his role in providing trust information to Bianca.

He remained Lily’s uncle.

But family access became conditional on boundaries established by the independent trustee and Daniel.

Grace received a settlement from Bianca for the assault and defamation campaign.

She refused Daniel’s suggestion that she retire.

“I’m sixty-one, not dead.”

“You don’t have to work.”

“I didn’t say I had to.”

Leah entered a cooperation agreement and avoided prosecution for delayed disclosure, though she testified extensively in civil proceedings.

No one became a spotless hero.

Daniel preferred it that way.

Caroline deserved truth, not mythology.

One Sunday Julian visited.

Lily met him in the garden.

Daniel stayed nearby.

Julian handed Lily a photograph of Caroline at sixteen holding a guitar.

“She hated that guitar.”

Lily smiled.

“Why?”

“She said the neck was too thick.”

“Daddy complains about guitar necks too.”

Julian looked toward Daniel.

“Your mother got that from him.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Caroline complained before she met me.”

For the first time, they laughed together.

Later Julian apologized to Lily.

Not vaguely.

Specifically.

“I wanted shares that your mother left to you. I helped someone who should never have had information about your trust.”

Lily asked, “Were you greedy?”

Julian swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Did you know Bianca would hurt Mom?”

“No.”

“Do I have to forgive you?”

Julian’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Lily considered that.

“Okay.”

Again, children were brutally efficient.

That evening Daniel took Lily to Studio A.

It was the first time she had entered since the investigation ended.

She stopped beneath the red recording indicator.

“It’s still there.”

“Yes.”

“The light Bianca didn’t see.”

“She saw it too late.”

Lily put on Caroline’s headphones.

Daniel sat at the console.

“Want to record something?”

“What?”

“Anything.”

Lily thought.

Then spoke into the microphone.

“My name is Lily Hale. I’m eight years old, and my mom’s name was Caroline.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“She liked stars?”

“No. Wrong story.”

Lily laughed.

Daniel laughed too.

“My mom liked music,” Lily continued. “She read everything before she signed it. Dad did not.”

Daniel raised a hand.

“Objection.”

“Grace told me.”

“Overruled.”

Lily smiled.

“Mom loved me. And Dad loved me even when he was at work too much.”

Daniel looked down.

“And Bianca used to make good waffles.”

He looked up.

Lily’s expression had turned serious.

“She also hurt people.”

Daniel said nothing.

Lily continued.

“I don’t want to pretend the waffles were bad because she was bad.”

Daniel felt something profound in that childish sentence.

Truth did not require simplifying people.

Bianca could have comforted Lily during nightmares and still manipulated her.

Daniel could have loved Caroline and still failed her.

Julian could love his sister and betray her trust.

Grace could be loyal and still remain silent too long.

Caroline could be brave and still make mistakes.

They finished recording.

Lily asked, “Can I save it?”

“Of course.”

“Three copies.”

Daniel smiled.

“Grace taught you that?”

“Yes.”

They saved it locally, to cloud backup, and to an external drive.

Before leaving, Daniel noticed an old file directory restored from Caroline’s archive.

One file remained unopened.

FINAL_SESSION_CRH.

He hesitated.

Lily saw it.

“Mom?”

“Probably.”

“Play it.”

Daniel considered protecting her.

Then corrected himself.

“Together.”

He opened the file.

Caroline’s voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if you ever find this, I hope you finally learned how to listen.”

Lily grinned.

Daniel groaned.

“Your mother is enjoying this from beyond the grave.”

Caroline continued:

“And if Lily is with you, tell her the purple headphones were never supposed to fit her until she was at least ten.”

Lily touched them.

“They fit.”

“Barely.”

Then Caroline laughed on the recording.

A laugh Daniel had almost forgotten.

The soundstage seemed to change around them.

Not haunted.

Remembered.

Caroline continued.

“One day Lily will ask what happened between us. Tell her the truth.”

Daniel became still.

“Not the cleaned-up version.”

Lily looked at him.

“Tell her we loved each other. Tell her we fought. Tell her I was angry. Tell her you were stubborn. Tell her neither of us knew the last argument was the last.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Then:

“And tell her listening late is still better than never listening at all.”

The recording ended.

Lily reached for his hand.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“You’re crying.”

“I’m aware.”

She leaned against him.

Above the console, the red recording indicator remained on.

This time, neither of them tried to stop it.
