Chapter 17 - The Person Behind the Messages

Daniel did not go alone.

He wanted to.

Then he remembered every lesson the last weeks had forced into him.

He called police.

He called Eric.

He told Grace to remain with Lily.

Daniel entered Studio A wearing a concealed transmitter authorized by investigators.

The room was dark except for the red recording indicator.

Someone sat behind the console.

Leah Monroe.

Daniel stopped.

“You sent the messages.”

“Yes.”

“The recording to Grace?”

“Yes.”

“The photograph of Bianca and Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“Why hide?”

Leah looked exhausted.

“Because Adrian knew I had copies.”

“Adrian is cooperating.”

“He wasn’t then.”

Daniel approached slowly.

“Why bring me here?”

She held up Bianca’s security token.

“Because this accesses the dead-man release.”

“How did you get it?”

“Adrian gave it to me six years ago.”

Daniel stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“It wasn’t Bianca’s token then.”

Leah explained.

The physical key had originally belonged to Adrian’s private legal archive.

Bianca later repurposed its certificate for Hale Soundworks after Daniel married her.

Adrian believed destroying it years ago would erase evidence.

Leah secretly kept it.

“I should have gone to police after Caroline died,” she said.

“Yes.”

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

She looked at him.

“Bianca knew my mother had undocumented employment records from years earlier. She threatened deportation consequences even though my mother later became a citizen. The threat was mostly nonsense.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why believe it?”

“Because fear doesn’t wait for legal analysis.”

He understood that.

Leah inserted the token.

An encrypted directory opened.

Hundreds of files.

Blackmail archives.

Bianca had kept leverage on everyone.

Adrian.

Julian.

Grace.

Daniel.

Former employees.

Trustees.

Bankers.

Even Aurora executives.

“She never trusted anyone,” Daniel whispered.

Leah shook her head.

“She trusted leverage.”

Inside was the dead-man release script.

Eric, watching remotely with investigators, disabled it.

Then another folder appeared.

CAROLINE.

Daniel hesitated.

Leah whispered, “Open it.”

Inside were photographs, copied emails, trust drafts, and one video.

Bianca sat alone in a car the morning after Caroline died.

She recorded herself.

Maybe as insurance.

Maybe confession.

Maybe because people like Bianca documented everything.

Her voice was shaking.

“Adrian says the steering modification should not have caused the crash.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“He says Caroline must have panicked.”

Bianca wiped tears from her face.

“I told him to stop her. I did not tell him to kill her.”

A pause.

“But I knew he said it could become unpredictable.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There was the moral center of the crime.

Bianca had known.

She chose the risk.

Recorded Bianca continued:

“I cannot undo it. If I confess, Adrian goes down, I go down, and everything was for nothing.”

Then something colder entered her face.

“So it cannot be for nothing.”

Daniel stared.

That sentence explained the next six years.

Caroline’s death had not created remorse.

It had created commitment.

Bianca needed the plan to succeed so the death would have meaning.

She pursued Daniel.

Married him.

Entered Lily’s life.

Built control over Hale Soundworks.

Tried to move Lily abroad.

Not simply for wealth.

Because abandoning the plan would force her to admit Caroline died for nothing.

Leah whispered, “She turned guilt into a business strategy.”

Police entered.

They secured the files.

Daniel asked Leah, “Why now?”

“Because Lily heard Bianca.”

“The headphones?”

Leah nodded.

“I was monitoring Bianca’s access because I knew she was moving toward the final trust transfer. When Lily accidentally heard their conversation, Bianca panicked.”

“And you sent Grace the rest.”

“Yes.”

“Why Grace?”

“Caroline trusted her.”

Daniel thought of all the people who had failed Caroline in different ways.

Grace had at least remained.

Then the studio doors opened.

Detective Kim entered with new information.

Bianca had learned the dead-man system had been disabled.

“How?”

“We don’t know.”

“She’s in custody.”

Kim’s face tightened.

“Her attorney visited forty minutes ago.”

Daniel understood.

The defense team had just become part of the evidence-preservation investigation.

Kim continued:

“Bianca has requested an immediate plea conference.”

Daniel looked at the red recording light.

For six years Bianca had controlled what remained unheard.

Now every hidden voice was becoming evidence.

But Daniel knew one thing.

A plea would not resolve Caroline for Lily.

Lily needed to hear the truth from him.

Not from headlines.

May you like

Not from recordings.

From her father.
