Chapter 16 - The Last Betrayal

The six-million-dollar account was in Switzerland.

Not illegal by itself.

The problem was ownership.

Julian controlled it through a trust.

Money had arrived from NorthStar-linked consultants.

He had never disclosed it during cooperation.

Genevieve confronted him.

“You said everything.”

“I thought the account had been closed.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I didn’t know money was still there.”

“Did you know it existed?”

“Yes.”

“So you lied.”

“Yes.”

The fragile progress between them collapsed.

Prosecutors threatened to revoke his cooperation agreement.

His custody case suffered immediately.

The evaluator suspended recommendation for unsupervised visits pending investigation.

Julian begged Genevieve.

“Don’t use this against me with Clara.”

“I don’t have to.”

“What?”

“You used it against yourself.”

That was the serious setback.

Genevieve had begun believing Julian might become a safe father.

Now she questioned everything again.

Worse, forensic review showed the account had been accessed two weeks before Clara’s birth.

From an IP address associated with the Hart marital home.

Julian denied logging in.

“Who else had access?”

“Eleanor knew some passwords.”

Eleanor denied it.

Then investigators found the device.

An old laptop in Eleanor’s storage unit.

She had accessed the account.

Why?

“To see whether Julian had enough money to escape Malcolm.”

Genevieve stared.

“You knew about six million dollars?”

“I knew there might be money.”

“Why didn’t you tell prosecutors?”

Eleanor began crying.

“Because I wanted something left.”

There it was.

After all the testimony.

After the assault plea.

After claiming she wanted to help.

She still protected money.

Genevieve felt exhausted beyond anger.

The account records, however, revealed something unexpected.

Most funds had been deposited without Julian’s knowledge.

Malcolm had been parking money in Julian’s structure.

A future scapegoat.

Julian’s failure was concealment of the account’s existence, not necessarily theft of all its contents.

Still serious.

Still a lie.

The final confrontation became unavoidable when Malcolm, awaiting sentencing on the first case and trial proceedings on remaining charges, moved through counsel to claim the Swiss funds were Julian’s bribe payments.

If accepted, Julian could face much greater criminal exposure.

Julian responded by offering prosecutors access to a final archive.

Sarah stared at him.

“Another archive?”

Julian looked ashamed.

“I kept insurance.”

“Where?”

“In the marital house.”

Genevieve laughed without humor.

“Of course.”

“What is it?”

“Video.”

“Of what?”

“Meetings with Malcolm.”

“How many?”

“Twenty-three.”

Genevieve stared.

“You recorded him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you give this to prosecutors months ago?”

“Because some recordings incriminate me.”

Silence.

Julian had still been protecting himself.

Sarah said, “Where are they?”

“A concealed server behind the study wall.”

Genevieve thought of the home where she had slept beside him.

Raised hopes for Clara.

Planned their future.

A secret server had been recording criminal meetings feet from her nursery plans.

Police obtained the files.

One video showed Malcolm giving Julian instructions about Genevieve’s incapacity plan.

Another showed Eleanor discussing the hospital documents.

Another captured Julian refusing to forge Genevieve’s trust signature.

Then Malcolm said:

“You won’t need to if she’s sufficiently medicated.”

Genevieve froze.

“Medic—”

Sarah paused the video.

Genevieve’s blood ran cold.

She remembered childbirth.

The weakness.

The unusual heaviness.

The inability to lift herself.

Doctors had attributed it to labor, blood loss, anesthesia, exhaustion.

“What did he mean?”

Police immediately requested hospital medication records.

The chart showed an additional sedative dose entered under Genevieve’s name shortly before Julian and Eleanor entered.

Ordering physician:

Dr. Leonard Voss.

Voss had no privileges at that hospital.

The order should never have been administered.

Yet someone had entered it using stolen credentials.

Genevieve stared at Sarah.

“They drugged me.”

The entire hospital scene changed.

Her weakness had not merely been exploited.

May you like

It had been engineered.

And the nurse who administered the medication was suddenly missing.
