Chapter 17 - The Nurse

Her name was Alicia Monroe.

Thirty-one.

Agency nurse.

She had left Pennsylvania the morning after Clara’s birth.

Police found her in North Carolina.

Alicia surrendered through an attorney.

She admitted administering the sedative.

“Who ordered it?”

“Julian Hart.”

Genevieve felt as if she had been slapped again.

Julian denied it.

Then Alicia produced messages.

The sender used a prepaid number.

JH.

Instructions referenced Genevieve by name.

Payment: $25,000.

But digital forensics showed the prepaid phone had connected repeatedly to Malcolm’s office Wi-Fi.

The initials were deliberate.

Malcolm had framed Julian.

Again.

Then another message appeared.

E.H. WILL HANDLE FAMILY SIDE.

Eleanor.

She denied knowledge of sedation.

Genevieve did not know what to believe anymore.

Alicia finally admitted meeting Malcolm personally.

“He said Mrs. Hart was having a psychiatric crisis and the medication was authorized.”

“Did you verify?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

That was the price of making Genevieve helpless.

Alicia pleaded guilty to offenses related to unlawful medication administration and falsification of medical records.

Malcolm faced additional charges.

The video archive made denial nearly impossible.

But prosecutors needed context.

Julian agreed to testify again, this time with no expectation that cooperation would erase his own offenses.

He admitted hiding the videos.

He admitted the Swiss account.

He admitted every coercive act he personally committed.

Then Genevieve testified.

The courtroom was full.

She described labor.

Clara’s cry.

Eleanor’s slap.

The documents.

Julian forcing the pen into her hand.

Malcolm’s lawyer attempted to suggest Genevieve’s memory was affected by medication.

Genevieve looked directly at him.

“That is precisely why they medicated me.”

The prosecutor played the recording.

Julian’s voice:

Once she signs, we control everything.

Eleanor:

And if she refuses?

Julian:

Then no one believes a word she says.

Genevieve heard herself again.

Weak.

Terrified.

Then the video from Julian’s hidden server played.

Malcolm:

Delivery gives you a narrow window. She’ll be exhausted. Voss handles capacity. You handle the signature.

Julian:

I’m not drugging her.

Malcolm:

I didn’t ask you to.

Julian:

Then who—

The recording ended.

Malcolm had known.

Whether he personally arranged Alicia was supported by digital evidence and her testimony.

The conspiracy was finally visible from planning to execution.

Outside court, Genevieve found Eleanor waiting.

“I didn’t know about the drug.”

Genevieve studied her.

“Do you expect me to believe you?”

“No.”

That answer surprised her.

Eleanor continued.

“I knew they wanted you exhausted. I knew Julian wanted the signature. I knew Malcolm had a plan.”

Tears ran down her face.

“I chose not to ask.”

Genevieve remembered Arthur.

Different generation.

Same failure.

Choosing not to know because knowledge creates responsibility.

“You still hit me.”

“Yes.”

“You still tried to take Clara.”

“Yes.”

“I may never let you near her.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I know.”

For once, there was nothing left to negotiate.

That evening Genevieve returned home.

Her rented townhouse.

Not Bellamy property.

Not Hart property.

Clara woke at midnight.

Genevieve held her in the rocking chair.

“You were there,” she whispered.

Clara blinked sleepily.

“You won’t remember.”

Genevieve smiled.

“Good.”

She kissed her forehead.

“You don’t have to inherit every story that happened before you.”

The next morning the prosecution rested.

Malcolm’s defense had one final strategy.

They called Julian.

Not as their witness.

They attempted to introduce evidence suggesting Julian had independently designed the hospital coercion and merely used Malcolm’s advice.

The judge limited portions.

But the central factual dispute remained.

Who controlled whom?

Genevieve finally understood the answer.

Both.

Malcolm manipulated Julian.

Julian still chose to manipulate Genevieve.

Eleanor followed Julian.

She still chose to strike Genevieve.

Arthur trusted Malcolm.

He still chose not to investigate.

There was no single monster large enough to absorb everyone else’s guilt.

That realization was the key to everything.
