Chapter 10 - Edward Bennett’s Secret

Claire wanted to dismiss the threat.

Maya would not let her.

“Daniel protected evidence. We find out what it is before Vale chooses the timing.”

Harrison searched the memory chip.

A folder called E.B. LEGACY required a second authentication.

Not Mia’s bracelet.

A password.

The hint read:

WHERE CLAIRE LEARNED TO SWIM.

Claire almost laughed.

Daniel.

Always sentimental even when building security.

“Seabrook.”

The Bennett family’s old summer house.

Password rejected.

“DockSeven.”

Rejected.

Then Mia said, “Grandpa called you Little Dolphin.”

Claire stared.

She typed:

LITTLEDOLPHIN

The folder opened.

Inside were records from twenty-seven years earlier.

Edward Bennett.

Thomas Vale.

Coastal development projects.

Tax shelters.

A settlement.

Claire’s stomach turned.

Harrison read quietly.

Edward had invested in a resort development structured by Vale early in both men’s careers.

The project failed.

Several limited partners sued, alleging they had been misled about risk.

Edward settled confidentially.

No criminal finding.

No admission of fraud.

But the correspondence was ugly.

Edward wrote:

If necessary, bury the valuation memo. We cannot survive another quarter of withdrawals.

Claire sat down.

“My father hid financial risk.”

Harrison nodded.

“He appears to have.”

“Did he steal?”

“Not from what we have.”

“Did he lie?”

Harrison did not answer.

Claire read further.

Vale had advised aggressive secrecy.

Edward later reversed course.

He disclosed the valuation issue to investors, settled claims, and severed his business relationship with Vale.

An undated handwritten letter from Edward explained why.

Thomas believes wealth gives a man the right to decide what others deserve to know. I believed that too for too long.

Claire read it twice.

The final line hurt.

If Claire ever inherits my institutions, I hope she learns earlier than I did that control without accountability is merely fear wearing a suit.

Harrison sat silently.

Maya said, “This is not the destruction Vale thinks it is.”

“It damages Dad’s reputation.”

“Yes.”

“He built the foundation around ethical stewardship.”

“After making serious mistakes.”

Claire stared at her father’s portrait on the wall.

For years she had preserved Edward Bennett as a monument.

Daniel had preserved him as a man.

Flawed.

Capable of concealment.

Capable of change.

Vale’s blackmail depended on Claire caring more about the family myth than truth.

She called the foundation board.

Within two hours, Claire disclosed the historic documents voluntarily to the trustees.

Martha Pierce looked stunned.

“You want us to release this?”

“After counsel reviews confidentiality obligations and legal restrictions, yes. We disclose what can lawfully be disclosed.”

“You understand donors may react.”

“Yes.”

“You understand this changes your father’s legacy.”

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“It makes it accurate.”

Harrison smiled faintly.

Martha did not.

The vote was unanimous.

Transparency destroyed Vale’s leverage.

Or Claire thought it did.

At 7:30 that evening, Vale himself called.

His voice was smoother than she expected.

“Your father always did become moral when cornered.”

Claire’s spine stiffened.

“You approached my daughter.”

“I spoke to her in public.”

“You attempted to put yourself on her school pickup list.”

“I did no such thing.”

“Your people did.”

“You’re making dangerous assumptions.”

“You’re calling me because blackmail failed.”

Vale laughed softly.

“Is that what Richard told you?”

“I don’t care what Richard calls it.”

“You should. He’s still lying to you.”

“What about?”

“Why Daniel hid the evidence instead of going directly to police.”

Claire said nothing.

Vale continued.

“Daniel needed leverage too.”

“What did he want?”

“To protect the foundation.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“He discovered your father had used foundation-adjacent assets to settle old investor claims.”

Claire’s heart tightened.

“That would be misuse of charitable assets.”

“Yes.”

“Do you have proof?”

“I have better.”

“What?”

“The original ledger.”

Claire stared at Harrison.

May you like

Vale’s voice lowered.

“And Richard knows exactly where it is.”
