Chapter 2 - The Man at Mia’s School

Claire locked the archive door.

Richard immediately reached for his phone.

Harrison pointed at him.

“Put it down.”

Richard laughed.

“You don’t give me orders.”

“I do when you’re standing inside a restricted legal archive containing potentially stolen trust records.”

Natalie folded her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

Claire ignored her.

She crouched beside Mia.

“Sweetheart, look at me.”

Mia did.

“The man in the picture. When did you see him?”

“At school.”

“Today?”

Mia shook her head.

“A long time ago.”

Richard interrupted.

“She’s six, Claire. Children confuse people.”

Mia looked at him.

“No, I don’t.”

Claire almost smiled despite everything.

“Where was he?”

“By the gate.”

“Did he talk to you?”

Mia’s fingers closed over the gold heart bracelet.

“He asked if Daddy gave me this.”

Every adult in the archive went silent.

“When?”

Mia shrugged.

“Before Christmas.”

Four months earlier.

Claire had still believed Richard was the man she would marry.

“What did you say?”

“I said yes.”

“Did he touch you?”

“No.”

“Did he tell you his name?”

“He said Mr. Vale.”

Harrison’s face changed again.

Richard stared at the floor.

Claire stood.

“You know him.”

Harrison answered.

“Thomas Vale.”

“Who is he?”

“A trusts-and-estates attorney.”

“Whose attorney?”

Harrison hesitated.

“Your father’s. Years ago.”

Claire felt the room contract.

“My father fired his estate lawyer before he died?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then explain exactly.”

Richard said, “This is not the time.”

Claire turned on him.

“You lost the right to decide what time it is when you threw my keycard on the floor.”

Natalie laughed nervously.

Richard shot her a look.

Claire noticed.

Not lovers united against her.

Co-conspirators under stress.

Different thing.

Harrison opened another file.

Thomas Vale appeared in corporate formation records connected to several entities receiving money from Bennett family accounts.

Not charitable foundation funds.

Private trust funds.

That distinction mattered.

Claire’s father had separated his wealth into multiple structures after Daniel and Claire married.

The foundation was charitable and governed by trustees.

Claire’s family wealth sat in the Bennett Legacy Trust.

Mia had a separate descendant’s trust created after her birth.

Harrison explained.

“The ORCHID designation may refer to Mia’s custodial trust.”

“Why would Daniel call it that?”

“He wouldn’t.”

Claire frowned.

Harrison zoomed into one PDF.

Project Orchid Custodian Transition Strategy.

Natalie’s name appeared in the metadata as the document creator.

Claire looked at her.

“You wrote this.”

“I worked in fiduciary consulting.”

“You told me you worked in luxury events.”

“That was later.”

Richard said, “Natalie, stop talking.”

Claire looked from one to the other.

“How long have you known each other?”

Natalie smiled faintly.

“Longer than you.”

Richard stepped toward her.

“Enough.”

Natalie’s smile disappeared.

Claire saw fear beneath it.

Richard was not merely her lover.

He had power over her too.

Harrison opened another document.

It described a contingency in Mia’s trust.

Until age seven, Claire served as primary custodian over distributions.

On Mia’s seventh birthday, governance changed.

Not ownership.

Mia remained beneficiary.

But the trust protector gained authority to replace the administrative trustee under certain circumstances.

Claire frowned.

“Who is the trust protector?”

Harrison searched.

The screen showed:

DANIEL BENNETT — INITIAL TRUST PROTECTOR.

Claire’s breath caught.

Her late husband.

Below it:

SUCCESSOR: THOMAS VALE.

“No.”

Harrison stared.

“I didn’t draft this.”

“Daniel would never appoint a man I don’t know.”

Richard said quietly, “Maybe Daniel knew him better than you did.”

Claire looked at him.

“How much do you know about my husband?”

Richard said nothing.

Mia pulled Claire’s sleeve.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Mr. Vale knew Daddy.”

Claire looked down.

“How do you know?”

“He showed me a picture.”

Claire’s skin went cold.

“What picture?”

“Daddy holding me when I was a baby.”

Harrison immediately took out his phone.

“I’m calling foundation security and local police.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You’re turning an administrative issue into hysteria.”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“A stranger approached my six-year-old outside school asking about an authentication bracelet connected to her trust.”

“He didn’t hurt her.”

“That sentence is not the defense you think it is.”

Richard’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

For the first time that night, Natalie moved toward him urgently.

“Don’t answer.”

Claire noticed the caller identification before Richard turned it away.

T. VALE.

Claire held out her hand.

“Answer it.”

“No.”

“Then I will.”

“It’s my phone.”

Harrison said, “Do not delete anything.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

The call stopped.

A text appeared.

Claire could not read all of it.

Only the first line.

Did she scan the bracelet?

Claire looked at Richard.

He looked back.

No more pretending.

Thomas Vale knew they were in the archive.

Which meant someone at the gala was reporting to him.
