Chapter 4 - The Proposal Was an Assignment

Natalie asked for a lawyer.

That ended her talking for the night.

Richard already had one.

By midnight, both had left the foundation under instructions not to destroy records and with formal preservation notices from Harrison.

Claire took Mia upstairs to the foundation’s residential suite.

The Bennett building had originally been a hotel before Edward converted it into the foundation headquarters. The top floor contained guest rooms for visiting fellows and donors.

Mia refused to sleep alone.

Claire lay beside her.

“Is Richard bad?” Mia asked.

Claire stared into the darkness.

“I don’t know everything yet.”

“He yelled.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted Daddy’s bracelet.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daddy hid information in it.”

Mia thought about that.

“Daddy was smart.”

Claire swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Richard isn’t my daddy.”

“No.”

Mia curled closer.

Claire closed her eyes.

Richard had never asked Mia to call him Dad.

Claire had once considered that respectful.

Now she wondered whether emotional distance had been strategic.

At eight the next morning, Harrison arrived with coffee and three file boxes.

“I didn’t sleep.”

“Neither did I.”

He placed one box down.

“This is Daniel’s old legal correspondence.”

Claire stared at it.

“You still had it?”

“Foundation records overlap with personal estate matters because Daniel sat on the foundation audit committee.”

They found the missing notice within two hours.

Not the amendment itself.

A delivery receipt.

Daniel had sent a proposed amendment removing Thomas Vale as successor trust protector.

The package had been delivered to Harrison’s law firm.

Signed for by:

EVELYN MARSH.

Harrison frowned.

“She worked in our records department.”

“Where is she now?”

“Retired.”

“Do you trust her?”

“I did.”

Claire almost laughed.

“That sentence is becoming dangerous.”

Harrison called Evelyn.

No answer.

Meanwhile, Detective Espinoza sent word that Richard’s connection to Vale had been confirmed through archived corporate records.

Richard had worked for Stonebridge Restructuring, a consulting company controlled by one of Vale’s partnerships.

He left six months before he “accidentally” met Claire at a marine conservation fundraiser.

Claire remembered the night perfectly.

Richard had spilled sparkling water near her table.

He made her laugh.

He knew nothing about luxury resorts, legacy foundations, or family trusts—or so he claimed.

He said he worked in distressed hospitality investments.

Just close enough to Claire’s world to seem interesting.

Not close enough to seem suspicious.

Harrison found another file.

Richard had attended a private Bennett Foundation presentation under a different employer seven months before Claire met him.

There was a photograph.

Richard in the back row.

Claire speaking at the podium.

Mia, then two, sitting with Daniel’s sister near the stage.

Daniel had already died.

Richard had seen Claire before their supposed first meeting.

Claire stared.

“He studied me.”

“Possibly.”

“He knew I was widowed.”

“Yes.”

“He knew I had a daughter.”

“Yes.”

“He knew I controlled the foundation.”

“Yes.”

“And then he happened to spill a drink beside me.”

Harrison said nothing.

Claire’s phone buzzed.

Richard.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

“What?”

“Please don’t let Harrison turn this into something it wasn’t.”

Claire laughed.

“You were researching me before we met.”

“I researched the foundation.”

“You attended my presentation.”

“It was public.”

“You worked for Thomas Vale.”

“Years earlier.”

“You knew Daniel had investigated him.”

“No.”

“Then why were you afraid of the bracelet?”

Silence.

Claire leaned against the desk.

“Tell me.”

Richard spoke quietly.

“Because Natalie told me Daniel hid something in jewelry he left Mia.”

“When?”

“After we started dating.”

“That is a lie.”

“Claire—”

“When did Vale ask you to approach me?”

Richard stopped breathing.

Claire waited.

Finally he said, “There was no assignment.”

She almost believed him.

Then he added, “Not at first.”

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

“Explain.”

“I met you because Vale wanted information about the foundation.”

“So the relationship was an assignment.”

“No. The introduction was.”

“You proposed.”

“I fell in love with you.”

“You humiliated me publicly last night.”

“I was trying to stop you from taking control before I fixed something.”

“Fixed what?”

Richard hesitated.

Then he said, “Natalie stole money from Mia’s trust.”

Claire went still.

Across the room Harrison looked up.

May you like

Richard continued.

“And if you think she was working for me, you still don’t understand who has been controlling whom.”
